end ofthe shalt F is a pinion,a. s meshes. with ahorizontal spur-wheel, b, which lthe necessary strength.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEECE.
WALLACE C. BROWN, OF MONSON, MAINE.
DERRlcK-swlNGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent |\To.` 257,149, dated May 2, 1882.
Application filed March 6, 1882. (No model.) l
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I WALLACE G. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at' Monson, in the county of Piscataquis and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Derrick-Swingers; and I d0 hereby declare the following to bc a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,'and toletters oriigures of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this specilication.
My invention relates to an improvement by which the swinging or turning of a derrick or hoisting-crane can be effected. I attain that object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanyiug drawings, in which-` I1`igure l is an elevation of so much of a derrick or crane as is necessary to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sect-ion on line a: a: ot' I1`ig.].
f Similar letters referto similar parts throughout the several views.
The frame by means of which the derrick and rotating devices are supported may be constructed in any approved manner and of In the drawings it consists of the vertical pieces A A and horizontal pieces A' A2 A3 and cross-braces.
F is a shaft having a bearing in pieces A' A2 of the frame, being secured bythe boxingsff.
Keyed or otherwise secured to the upper This pinion is secured to derrick-postB and turns with it. Derrick-post B isslepped pivotally in the frame, either in the upper part, A2, as shown vin Fig. 1, or, passing through thc upper part, may be pivoted in the foundation upon which the frame rests. Derrick-post B is also pivoted at its upper end, and is supported by guys or in any other approved manner.
The hoisting mechanism of the derrick is not shown in the drawings, as it is not essential to my invention. 1
G is a shaft mounted horizontally in pieces A A of the frame in the same vertical plane with shaft F. It is secured by boxings g g, and has mounted upon it the belt-pulley C, to which the power is applied to rotate the shaft G. Upon the shaft G are also mounted beveled friction-wheels D D'.
On the lower end of shaft F, andv between to permit such limited oscillation.
the friction-wheels D D', is mounted a beveled fricton-wheel,E, adapted to be engaged alternatcly with wheels D D', or disengaged from both of them, by oscillating the lower end of shaft F in the vertical plane of the axis of the shaft G, the upper boxing,j`, being arranged The lower end of shaft F has its bearing upon a block, I, which slides longitudinally upon the horizontal piece A' of the main frame. The block I slides inthe straps or ways t' i, which pass around it and are secured to the piece A'. The reciproca'tion of the block I is effected by the lever L, which is pivoted in the cross piece A' and oscillates horizontally, having a slotted bearing in the block I, so that the oscillation of the lever L reciprocates the block I.
To the piece A of the frame is pivcted the hand-lever M, as shown in Fig. 1, which oscillates vertically, and by which the block I is reciprocated by means ot' a link, L', which co'nnects the oscillating end of the lever L to the lower end of the hand-lever M.
When it is desired to rotate the derrick the friction-wheel E is, by means of the hand-lever M, thrown into enga-gement with that one of the moving wheels D D' (say D', as shown in the drawings) which will rotate it in the required direction. After rotating the derrick to therequired position the friction-wheels can be disengaged and the movement stopped. To rotate the derrickin the opposite direction the wheel E is brought into engagement with the wheel D.
In place of friction-wheels, beveled-gear wheels may be used;
What Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a rotary derrick-post, B, having mounted thereon the gear-wheel b, and the conthiuously-rotating power-shaft G, carrying the friction-wheelsl) D', of the swinging shaft F, having thefriction-wheel E, adapted to engagewith either of the wheels DD', and pinion a, meshing directly with the'gear-wheel b on the derrick-post, substantially as shown and described.
In testimon f whereof I affix mvsifuiature in Witnesses:
W. L. SAMPsoN, A. J. CUsHMAN.
