SPECIFCATION`forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,098, dated April 25, 1882.
Application filed February 3, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK SNYDER, a citi-A zen oftheUnitcd States, residing atNew York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in BeltTighteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for tightening belts, especially intermediate of their pulleys; and it consists in the combination of a hinged frame carrying a tightening-pulley adapted to engage the belt to be tightened, a rack pivoted to the hinged frame, a pinion engaging the rack, and a stop-pawl for holding the pinion in a fixed position, as hereinafter more fully set forth. v
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure lis a diagram illustrating the manner ot' applying the tightener to a belt. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a front view thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the hinged frame; B, the tightening-pulley; C, the rack; D, the pinion, and E the stop-pawl.
The frame A is arranged adjacent to the belt, to be tightened in such a manner that the pulley B, which is mounted in the frame, may be brought in direct contact with the belt.
The rack O is connected to the frameA at one end by a pivot,f, and it engages the pinion D by means of its teeth, the pinion being mounted in a rigid standard, g. Y
The stop-pawl E engages the teeth of the pinion D to hold the latter in the position to which it may be adjusted; but, it' desired, a ratchet-wheel may be fixed to the pinion-shaft to receive the stop-pawl.
In applying the apparatus to use the hinged frame A is swung toward the belt, as by turning the pinion-shaft so as to bring the pulley B in contact therewith, and then the stoppawl 'E is thrown in gear, whereby the hinged frame, together wit-h the pulley, is firmly held in any position t0 which it may be adjusted. The rack O passes through the standard (1, and is held in gear by means of a roller, i, arranged in contact with the back thereof.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the hinged frame carrying the tightening-pulley, the rack pivoted to such frame, the pinion engaging the rack, and the stop-pawl, for the purpose set forth.
