JAMES T. SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING DISPLAY-RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,811, dated April 18, 1882. Application filed February 24, 1882. (No model.)
10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES T. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Display- Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my improvement is the construction of a rack and holder for umbrellas, canes, or other articles, chiefly forthe purpose of permitting their display, and which can be easily folded and packed for transportation or storing.
It consists of a combination of side pieces provided with hooks or pegs, top and bottom pieces provided with suitable holes and recesses and with proper supports, and all pivoted together to permit the frame to be closed or slid apart. Metallic braces are also employed to hold the frame in position when open for use.
My improvement is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rack open for use, and Fig. 2 a view of the same when closed for storing or transportation.
Similar letters refer to similarparts throughout the several views.
A A represent the two front supports; B B, the upper and lower cross-pieces; O O, the side braces, and D cross-brace connecting G C. These parts are all pivoted to each other, so that the whole structure can be folded up, as shown in Fig. 2.
The front supports, AA, are provided with hooks or pegs d d 01, across which to rest umbrellas or other articles.
The upper cross-piece, B, is provided with holes 0 e e, through which to insert canes, &c., and lower cross-piece, B, is provided with smaller recesses, f f f, to receive the pointed 5 ends of the articles put through the upper holes, 6.
One or more wire or other braces, g, hinged at their bottom to cross-piece B and hooking into an eye on the back of one of the front supports, are employed to hold the cross and front supports rigidly apart when the rackisin use, and the front supports, A A, and back braces, O G, are also provided with screw-eyes h h h, ranging along the side of the front supports and up the face of the back braces, for the employment therewith of detachable hook-braces l l, by which the frame or rack is spread and held apart ata higher or lower position, as desired. In folding the rack up the metallic braces are unhooked, the back supports slid up to the front, and the front supports slid laterally together.
The great advantages of my improvement are that it provides an excellent portable stand or holder for the display and reception of canes, umbrellas, and other articles, that it can be easily, quickly, and compactly folded for removal, storage, and transportation, and that it can be quickly set up and strongly braced when desired to be used.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- A rack for holdingand displaying umbrellas,
canes, or other articles, consisting of the front supports provided with hooks or pegs, the upper and lower cross-pieces provided with holes and recesses, as described, and the back braces, all pivoted to each other to permit of sliding and folding the parts together, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaflix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
JAMES THOMAS SMITH.
