SULKY HAY-RAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,735, dated April 18, 1882.
Application filed July 28, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER P. PRALL, of Oolusa, in the county of Colusa and State of California, have invented certain useful Improvements in Sulky Hay-Rakes, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of thesame, taken through the line 00 00, Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation, showing the foot-lever and its attached rods unlocked.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the operation of raking hay and promote conenience in opera-ting and controlling the hayrake.
The invention consists in the combination, with the carriage and the upper bar of the rake-head, of the connecting-bar, the foot-lever, and the draw-bar, whereby the draft-strain will hold the rake-teeth to their work and can he made to raise the rake-teeth and dump the collected hay; and, also, in the combination, with the carriage and the upper bar of the rake-head, of the connecting-bars, the connecting-lever, and the hand-lever, whereby the rake-teeth can be raised by hand-power to unlock the foot-lever and allow the draft-strain to dump the collected hay, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A are the wheels, B the axle, and G the thills, which parts form the rakecarriage.
To the upper side of the axle 13 is attached a rod or bar, D, to which are attached the upper ends of the rake-teeth E. The rake-teeth E are formed of spring-wire curved in the ordinary manner. From the bar.D the raketeeth E pass up to and are coiled around a bar, F, placed above and parallel with the bar D. By this construction the rake-teeth are raised above the axle to form more space for the collected hay and to avoid the tendency of the rake-teeth to rise and slip over the hay.
To the upper bar, F, at or near its middle part, is attached the end of the short connectin g-rod Gr, the lower end of which is hinged to a short lever, H,'pivoted to a rod, 1', attached to the thills 0. To the lower end of the lever H is hinged the rear end of a short connecting-rod, J, the forward end of which is hinged to the lower end of a hand-lever, K. The handlever K is pivoted to the thill O, and its upper end projects into such a position that it can be conveniently reached and operated by the driver from his seat to raise the rake-teeth and discharge the collected hay.
To the middle part of the bar. F is also hinged the upper end of a connecting-rod, L, the lower end of which is hinged to the lower end of a lever, M, which is pivoted to a rod, N, attached to the thills G. The upper end of the lever M projects into such a position that it can be readily reached and operated by the driver with his foot. To the foot-lever M is hinged the rear end of a rod, 0, which passes through a keeper attached to the lower side of the forward cross-bar of the thills O, and to its forward end is pivoted the single-tree P, to which the draft is applied. The hinging-point of the draft-rod O is arranged in such a position as to be in line with or a little above the pivot ing-point ot' the lever M when the rake-teeth E are in working position, so that the draftstrain will lock the lever M and hold the said rake-teeth to their work. With this construction, when the lever M is moved to bring the hinging-point of the draft-rod 0 below the pivoting-point of the foot-lever M, the draft-strain will operate the said foot-lever and raise the rake-teeth E from the ground, discharging the collected hay. \Vith this construction, the hand-lever K and the foot-lever M move in opposite directions toward each other when raising the rake-teeth E from the ground, so. that the driver can use the power of hand and foot to the best advantage in controlling the raketeeth.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.
