Description

Sept. 11,. 1951 c. M. WOODWARD DEMOUNTABLE BEAM COMPASS Filed NOV. 1, 1949 Clarence M Waadward ATTORN EY Patented Sept. 11, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE (Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as amended April 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757) 3 Claims.
The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States for governmental purposes without payment to me of any royalty thereon in accordance with the provisions of the act of April 30, 1928 (ch. 460, 45 Stat. L. 467).
This invention relates to a drafting instrument of the beam compass type and particularly to one which includes a pen of the bow compass type, a wooden rectangular bar, a spring clip for detachably fastening said compass to said bar and a second spring clip provided with an adjustable clamp for a needle which forms a pivot.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my assembled instrument.
Figure 2 is a detail of a compass mounting clip.
Figure 3 is a detail of a companion pivot mounting clip.
Figure 4 is a cross-section of a clip.
Figure 5 is a cross-section on line 55, Figure 3.
In these drawings:'
A U-shaped clip In is formed of resilient sheet metal with one leg l2 longer than the companion leg I l and with a triangular shaped prong I3, the use of which will be disclosed later in this specification, and a rectangular punching l4 bent into an L shape for attaching a channel member [5 to the face of the clip 10. The detachable channel member [5 is provided with a transverse threaded hole I6 for receiving a set screw IT, by means Of which the pivot leg 18 of a bow compass I9 is rigidly attached to the clip 10. A second spring clip 20 is provided with a sleeve member 2| corresponding to the channel member provided with a guiding hole for a pivot pin 22 and a transverse threaded opening for a clamping set screw 23.
The spring clip 2|] is also provided with a detachable base member 24 to which it is secured by an L-shaped punching 25. The base member 24 is also provided with two hemispherical feet 26 which serve to hold my device in an upright position.
A wooden beam 21 is resiliently engaged by the clips l0 and when the prongs I3 of each clip imbed themselves in the wooden beam at points selected by the operator. The wooden beam 21 may be formed in sections which are detachably united by a spring clip 28 provided with two prongs l3.
My beam compass is designed for easy demounting and for compact storage while utilizing a bow compass of common form for the marking element. While a bow pen is illustrated in the drawings a bow pencil may be readily sub- 00 stituted for drawing a penciled line.
It should be understood that the present disclosure is for the purpose of illustration only,
and that the invention includes all modifications and equivalents which fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A drafting compass comprising a beam, a resilient U-shaped clip provided with an inturned prong in a channel wall and an outward projection from a channel wall, a clamp for rigidly mounting a drafting instrument on said outward projection, a second resilient clip provided with an inturned prong in a channel Wall and with a downward projection for coupling with a base member, and a slotted base member adapted for detachably receiving said projection and provided with a pivot clamp and a plurality of supporting feet.
2. A beam compass forming attachment comprising a U-shaped spring clamp provided with an inwardly projecting prong and a downward projection for attaching a base member, and a slotted base member adapted for detachably receiving said projection, a pivot clamp rigidly mounted on said base member, and a plurality of supporting feet mounted on said base member.
3. A drafting compass comprising two beam sections, a resilient U-shaped coupling clip provided with inturned prongs for uniting said beam sections, a resilient U-shaped clip provided with an inturned prong and an outward projection, a clamp for rigidly mounting a drafting instrument on said outward projection, a third resilient clip provided with an inturned prong and with a downward projection for detachably securing a slotted base member, and a slotted base member provided with a pivot clamp and a plurality f supp rtin feet.
CLARENCE M. WOODWARD.
