This invention relates generally to manicuring instruments and particularly to a universal nail file.

The main object of this invention is to produce a file having a plurality of nail cutting surfaces formed on a single piece of stainless steel.

The second object is to coniine some of the cutting surfaces to grooves to prevent the file from running oif the nail While being used.

The third object is to provide a le which will form a curved edge on a nail in order to prevent the usual feather edge which should be trimmed away.

The fourth object is to leave the back of the cutting portion smooth in order to prevent injury to the skin.

The fifth object is to provide a variety of grades of cutting surfaces, ranging from coarse to extra fine, on a single piece of metal.

The sixth object is to construct a file which, though flexible enough for its purpose, is also exceedingly rugged, owing to its shape, making possible the use of lighter gauge material than is otherwise used for such devices.

I accomplish these and other objects in the manner set forth in the following specication as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 1 is a plan of the preferred form of the le.

Fig. 2 is a view of the le opposite the side shown in Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a side elevation.

Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken along the line 4-4 in Figs. 3 and 7.

Fig. 5 is a plan of a modified form oi the file.

Fig. 6 is a view opposite to Fig. 5.

Fig. 7 is a side elevation of Fig. 6.

Fig. 8 is a transverse section taken along the line 8-8 in Fig. '7.

Like numbers of reference refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views.

Referring in detail to the drawing, there is shown an elongated straight blade having a flat straight handle I0 at one end and a flat point II at the other end which are joined by a filing section I2 which is reversely curved in a transverse direction as shown in Fig. 4. It can be seen that in using this le, the flnger nail will be confined to the grooves I3 or I 4 formed by the ling surfaces. It is desirable to make the surfaces I3 and It of different grades of coarseness.

In using this file the nail will not be filed square across the edge but round, thereby eliminating the feather edge commonly produced.

Inasmuch as the surfaces I6 and I'l are smooth, it is clear that the skin cannot be inlured during the ling operation.

ln the modied form of the le shown in Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive, the handle IU-A is straight and the tip I I-A is separated from the uted or undulating portion IZ--A by a iiat le section I2-B whose side I8 is cross cut up to the tip IIA, while its side I9 has only the central portion 20 cut in continuation of the central grooved portion I3-A and preferably cut iiner than the portions IE5- A and the side I8 is cut finer than the grooves Ill-A.

In this form of the device are combined all of the advantages of the old at file and my new improved le as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, inelusive.

I claim:

A nail file comprising a flat straight blade having an undulating cross section between its ends, the concave areas of the undulating portions being le cut and the convex areas being smooth, characterized by having a flat tip end, said tip having a central file portion cut ner than is the central flute of said undulating portion and having its reverse side iile cut across the entire side of the tip.
