' 2' Claims. '(01. 2-28) This invention relates to form. constricting and molding garments, suchas a girdle, a brassiere, or a combination girdleand brassire.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a garment of the above kind having an improved control panel which secures a maximum lateral distribution of resilient and constrictive effort for the quantity of elastic material employed.
Another object of the inventionis to provide a control panel which will provide an excellent local constrictive effect on. the body while affording maximum comfort.
A further object'of the invention is to provide an improved garment of. the above kind which comprises relatively few and, simple parts and is economical to manufacture. H I
The exact nature of the presentinvention will become apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevational view howing the outside of the front portion of a combined girdle and brassiere embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the inside of said front portion;
Figure 3 is an outside elevational view of a front control panel for a girdle embodying the present invention;
Figure 4 is an'inside elevational view thereof;
Figure 5 is an enlarged horizontal section taken on the line 5--5 of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a front elevational view looking at the outside of a brassiere embodying a front control panel constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 7 is a similar View looking at of the brassiere;
Figure 8 is a horizontal section taken on the line 8-8 of Figure '7.
Referring in detail to the drawings and par ticularly to Figures 1 and 2, 5 indicates a combined brassiere and girdle composed of a girdle section 5 and a brassire section 1, respectively having shoulder straps 8 and hose supporters 9. The girdle section 6 has a front control panel ll! comprising an outer layer H and an inner layer I2. The outer layer includes a central relatively wide vertically extending area or strip of flexible inelastic material 13 such as plain woven cloth. This area may be cut out centrally of its lower edge to form a notch which is covered by a conventional gusset I 4 of porous flexible elastic material. The elastic strips I5 and H; of the outer and inner layers are of equal widths, and each consists of a minor portion of its layer. Also, said strips are arranged so that each strip l5 overlies a strip l8. However, the strips l5 and I8 are of longitudinally arched form (either angular as shown or curved), and those of one layer face toward each other while those of the other layer face away from each other. For instance, the corresponding ends of the strips [5 in the outer layer diverge, while the corresponding ends of the strips I 8 in the inner layer converge. Thus, corresponding ends of each strip l5 and the underlying strip is registered therewith cross each This provides a wide distribution of the elastic and secures a maximum lateral distribution of resilient and constrictive effort for the quantity of elastic material used.
In Figures 3 to 5 inclusive I show a front control panel for a girdle composed of an outer layer Ila and an inner layer [2a. The outer layer includes a central inelastic strip I 3a having the gusset 14a, intermediate arched elastic strips l5a, and side inelastic strips 16a. The inner layer includes a central inelastic strip Ila, intermediate arched elastic strips l8a, and side inelastic strips Wu. The layers Ila and IM are constructed and joined in substantially the same manner as the layers II and I2 of the control panel for the garment of Figures 1 and 2.
In Figures 6 to 8 inclusive, l show a brassire, the front of which has a wideiunder-breast portion 6b in the form of a control panel constructed in accordance with the present invention. The portion or panel 6b includes an outer layer Ill) and an inner layer l2b. The layer llb includes a central inelastic strip 131), intermediate arched elastic strips I51), and side inelastic strips lfib. The inner layer includes a central inelastic strip l'lb, intermediate arched elastic strips 186, and side inelastic strips I91). The layers lib and [2b are also constructed and joined in substantially the same manner as the layers I! and I2. Also, the front of the brassiere has side members 2| attached to the side edges thereof, and these members have the usual fasteners to secure the garment about the body, and shoulder straps 8b are attached to these members and to breast cups 22 forming the upper portion of the front of the brassiere. The outer layer of the control panel 6b and the strip Ilb are stitched at their upper edges to the lower edge of said upper front portion.
In all embodiments, the central strip of the inner layer of the control panel is stitched at its upper edge to the lower edge of the upper front portion of the garment and/or to upper edge of the central strip of the outer layer, and the matched or registered side edges of the layers are stitched together, the layers being otherwise free of connection with each other. Also, in each form, each elastic strip of the outer layer overlies an elastic strip of the inner layer, and the elastic strips are of longitudinally arched form, the elastic strips of one layer facing toward each other and those of the other layer facing away from each other, so that corresponding ends of the registered elastic strips of the layers cross each other to secure maximum lateral distribution of resilient and constrictive effort for the quantity of elastic material used.
From the foregoing description, it is believed that the construction and advantages of the pres- .4 mt invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. Further modifications and changes in details of construction are contemplated, such as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A form constricting and molding garment having a front control panel which includes an outer layer and an inner layer of equal widths superimposed on one another, the side edges of the layers being registered and attached to each other at the sides of the garment along the entire length of the inner layer, each of said layers including a vertically extending central area and similar side vertically extending areas of flexible inelastic material, and similar vertically extending areas of flexible elastic material connecting the side areas to opposite sides of the central area, each elastic area of the outer layer being registered with an elastic area of the inner layer, the elastic areas of each layer being of longitudinally and oppositely arched form, the registered elastic areas being oppositely arranged so that the corresponding ends thereof cross each other, the upper edges of the central areas of the layers being stitched together and the layers bein otherwise free of connection with each other.
2. The construction defined in claim 1, wherein the elastic areas of the outer layer face away from each other and those of the inner layer face toward each other.
