The invention relates to new and useful improvements. in a two-compartment sheet metal bread box.

An object of the invention is to provide a twocompartment sheet metal bread box 'whichconsists of few parts firmly joined and wherein the sides, topand bottom are shaped at the front endof the boxso'as to provide inset-door jambs.

A further object" of the invention is to provide'a breadboX of the above type wherein the door jambs at the side of the box incline rearwardly whereby down-folding doors will be held closed by gravity. 1

The invention has to do with a sheet metal bread box. The bottom, rear side or back, and the top are all made of one piece of metal which is preferably shaped at the rear so as to provide a gradually rounded portion where the top merges into the back and also a rounded portion where the back merges into the bottom. Sheet metal one-piece sides are secured to the bottom, back and top by seaming or clinching. The box is divided into two compartments by a horizontal partition.

The front edges of the bottom, top, and sides are bent laterally, thence inwardly, and thence again laterally so as to provide inset door jambs. The partition is also bent downwardly and beaded so as to provide separated door jambs.

There is a door for each compartment and the doors are mounted so as to fold down. The front of the box is inclined rearwardly so that when the doors are in closed position against the door jambs they will rest thereon by gravity.

Referring in more detail to the drawings, the improved sheet metal bread box includes a bottom I, a back 2, and a top 3. The bottom; back and top are made fromone piece of metal. The metal of the: top where itsjoins the metal of the back is roundedzasxinditzatedat. 4-in Figure 1.. Likewise, the" metalof the bottom is roundedas indicated at 5 in Figure 1.

This is a very simple way. of forming a very rigid connection between the sides and the remainderof the body portion of the box.-

The front end portions of the sides of the box are bent laterally inwardly toward each other as indicated at 8 in: the drawings. These laterally bent portions 8 are thence bent rearwardly at!) and then again I laterally inwardly at Ill, thus forming inset door jambs for. the doors- The bottom I is likewise bent laterally in an upward direction as indicated at H in Figure 5, thence rearwardly as indicated at l2, and again laterally inwardly in an upward direction as indicated at [3. This forms a door jamb extending across the bottom of the box. The laterally projected portion I3 of the bottom and the laterally inset portion In of the side wall are lapped and secured together by a rivet I4.

The top of the box is similarly constructed. It is bent downwardly, thence rearwardly, and thence downwardly to form an inset door jamb which laps onto the door jambs of the side walls and is riveted thereto.

The interior of the box is divided into two compartments by a partition [5. This partition is horizontal and is so disposed as to divide the box into two substantially equal compartments. The partition at its ends has downwardly bent flanges l6 which are secured by rivets I! to the side walls of the box. The partition at the front edge thereof is bent downwardly at l8 and is beaded at l!) intermediate the upper and lower portions of the downwardly bent part so as to provide two spaced door jambs extending across the front of the box. This downwardly projecting portion of the partition is extended as indicated at 20 in Figure 2 so as to overlap the door jamp ID of the side member and is secured thereto by riveting as indicated at 2|.

The top, bottom, and side walls are so dimensioned and shaped that the door jambs referred to above incline rearwardly from the bottom toward the top.

The lower compartment is closed by a door 22 and the upper compartment is closed by a door 23. A pintle rod 25 is located adjacent the inwardly bent part l2 and extends all the way across from the one inwardly bent portion 9 of the side wall to the other and extends through these inwardly bent portions so as to be supported thereby. The door 22 is formed of a single piece of sheet metal and at the bottom is looped about the pintle rod 25 as indicated at 26 in Figure of the drawings. The upper door is similarly constructed and is hingedly connected to a pintle rod 21 located adjacent the partition and extending all the way across and through the inwardly bent portions 9 of the side walls.

When the doors are in closed position they rest on the door jambs which are inset as noted above so that the doors are substantially housed within the openings therefor. Inasmuch as the door jambs incline rearwardly the doors will be held in closed position by gravity so that no latches are necessary for holding the doors tightly closed.

The bottom wall I of the box may be provided with an opening 28 which greatly facilitates the removal of crumbs and the like from the lower compartment. This opening may be covered by a slide 29.

It will be obvious that minor changes in the details of the construction and the arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A two-compartment sheet metal bread box comprising a one-piece bottom, back and top, one-piece sides seamed thereto, a horizontal partition dividing the box into two compartments, said bottom, top and sides having their front end portions bent laterally inwardly, then rearwardly, and again laterally inwardly to form inset door jambs, said partition being bent downwardly and beaded intermediate the upper and lower ends thereof so as to form spaced door jambs, a door for closing each compartment, each door being hinged at the lower edge thereof to swing outwardly and downwardly when opened, the sides, top and bottom being dimensioned so that the side door jambs incline rearwardly from the bottom toward the top whereby the doors resting thereon will be held closed by gravity.

A two-compartment sheet metal bread box comprising a one-piece bottom, back and top, one-piece sides seamed thereto, a horizontal partition dividing the box into two compartments, said bottom, top and sides having their front end portions bent laterally inwardly, then rearwardly, and again laterally inwardly to form inset door jambs, said partition being bent downwardly and headed intermediate the upper and lower ends thereof so as to form spaced door lambs, hinge pintle rods adjacent the partition and bottom and extending through the rearwardly bent portions of the sides, and a onepiece door hingedly connected to each pintle for independently closing the compartments, said sides, top and bottom being dimensioned so that the side door jambs incline rearwardly from the bottom toward the top whereby the doors resting thereon will be held closed by gravity.
