AUGUST SOHULTZE, OF GALVESTON, TEXAS.
SNATH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 256,385, dated April 11, 1882.
' Application filed February13,1882. (ModeL) To all whom "it may concern:
Be itknown that I, AUGUST SeHULTzn, of Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Snath-Fastcners; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being h ad to the accompanying draw- .ings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This inventionrelates to devices for attaching scythes to their handles; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. I
In the drawings hereto annexed, A rcpre scnts a metallic plate adapted to be secured by screws or bolts to the end of the scythehandle, and provided witha bracket, B, overlapping the end of the same, and with studs D D, to be titted in suitable holes or recesses in the handle, so as to hold thcdevice securely in position.
Upon the plate A, near its front end, is formed a bracket, 0, through which passes a bolt, E, upon the projecting ends of which is or lugs G to receive the projecting ends of the bolt. 1
The plate F is provided near its rear end with two parallel transverse slots, H I, and near its front end with 'a diagonal slot,J. Bolts K, which are fitted in the slots I J, are provided upon their under sides with hooks L. A similar hooked bolt, M, is fitted in an opening, N, near the side or edge of plate F. At
ets O 0, having bearings for a shaft or bolt,
at its extreme end with a handle, R, by which it, may be readily manipulated, so as to be thrown into engagement with teeth T upgn the I under side of plate A, near the rear end of the latter.
Plate Ais provided with a pair of brackets,
S, adjoining the teeth T, and connected by a cross-piece, U, in which works a set-screw, V, which may be screwed down, so as to engage teeth or recesses W formed in the inner side of the rack-bar Q, and thus retain'the latter securely in any position to which it may be adjusted.
In operation, after the device has been attache'd to the end of the handle, the blade is attached to the plate F by means of the hooked bolts K M, which may be properly adjusted, so as to bring the blade to the desired angle. The hook upon the end of the shankof the blade is adjusted in the slot H of plate F.
The latter may be adjusted to any desired angle in relation to the handle by manipulating the segmental rack Q.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim I and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a device for attaching scythe-blades to handles, the plate A, having bracket B and studs D D, in combination with a hinged adjustable plate, F, having means for attaching the blade thereto, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the plateA, thehinged plate F, having slots H I J, and hooked bolts K M, and mechanism for adjusting the two plates in relation to each other substantially as set forth.
3. The-combination of the plate A, having teeth T, brackets S, connected by cross-piece U, and set-screw V, with the hinged plate F, hav- 8 ing slots H I J, hooked bolts K M, and hinged segmental rack Q, provided upon its inner side with teeth or recesses W, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST SGHULTZE.
