STRAIGHT-WAY VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,717, dated March 28, 1882, Application filed December 30, 1881. (No model) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANlEL R. BURNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Straight-Way Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in what is technically termed straightway valves, and the objectis to produce a str'aigh tway valve that will prevent any leakage of water or otherfiuid when closed, and that will be readily unseated when itis desired to open the valve.
The invention consists in a valve having two disks which close the openings of the valvechamber by being pressed against their seats by means of a pair of angular levers pivoted to a connecting-link on the valve-stem at one end and to lugs on the valve-disks at the other ends, and bearing against a point on said disks with their downward-projectin g ends, and by which they are firmly held in position when closed.
' To thelower sides of the valve-disks is attached a connecting-link, which prevents the valvedisks from swinging inward on opening the valve-disks and holds them in a parallel position, and thereby prevents the obstruction of the passage-way, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which the figure represents a vertical crosssection of my improved valve in a closed position.
In the drawing, A represents the body or shell of the valve, having the ordinary bonnet, A, and stuffing-box, and O O are the inlet and outlet openings, which are provided with a screw-thread or flange to connect them to the pipes or other desired place.
The stem H has a reduced end, over which the cross-head or swivel g fits, and to this swivel are pivoted the angular levers a to. These levers are provided at their outer ends with slots 11, that fit over pins B,secured to lugs D on the two valve-disks, E,- and permit the unseatin g of said disks. The downward-projecting ends of the levers a a bear against the small points 0 on the valve-disks, and when the valve is closed firmly press said disks against their seats ANGISI and prevent any possible leakage. The points 5 5 are preferably arranged centrally. At their lower sides the disksE are provided with slotted lugs e, to which a connecting-link, d, is attached by pins or bolts, and by means of which link the valve-disks are prevented from swinging together, and are held in a parallel position when drawn away from their seats, and the valve is opened, thus preventing any obstruction of the passage-way. The slots in the lugs permit the valve-disks to become unseated and prevent any binding action.
In the lower part of the case or shellA are arranged projections or recesses f, against which the lower edge of the valve-disks strike when they are forced down by the stem, which can be operated by a screw and hand-wheel, or a lever pivoted to the stem.
It will be readily seen that instead of the angular levers being provided with slots, the lugs may be slot-ted and the levers bolted to them, and the connecting-link may be made with a forked end and slotted, and the lugs be made solid, without departing from the spirit of my invention.

The operation is as follows: When the valvestem is raised the levers a a are first loosened from the pins 0 a, when the valve-disks will be uuseated by means of the slots in them and the lower lugs and by the pressure against the face of the valve-disks. As these are then raised into the space S above the opening 0, the entire passage-way will be left unobstructed for the passage of the water or other fluid. When it is desired to close the valve the stem with the disks will be forced down by the stem until they strike against the projections f, and the lovers a will then come in contact with the pins 0 on the disks, and hold them firmly against their seats, preventing any possible leakage, and until the valve is again opened.
By means of the levers bearing against the points a on the disks they can accommodate themselves to their seats, as the levers have only a very small bearing-surface, and the connecting-links d will retain the disks always in a parallel position. The valve-disks are shown in dotted lines when opened.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. In a straight-way valve, the connectinglink at, the valve-disks E E, having attachinglugs, and the angular levers a a, connected to and operated by a valve-stem, arranged substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a straight-way valve, the combination of the angular levers a a, the disks E, having bearing-points c 0, and the connecting-link d, attached to the lower sides of said valve-disks, all arranged for operation substantially as set forth.
3. In a straight-way valve, the combination of the angular levers 0t a, pivoted to a swivel, g, on the valve-stem, and having slots b, with the valve-disks E, having bearing-points c 0, and the connecting-link 61, attached to slotted lugs e 0, all arranged for operation substantially as specified.
4. The valve herein described, consisting of a shell, A, having openings 0 O and projections ff, the stem H, cross-head or swivel g, angular levers a a, the disks E E, having bearing-points c c, and the connecting link 01, attached as shown, and all constructed and arranged for operation substantially as shown and specified.
