INVENTOR WILLIAM CARLRENNE ATTORNEY Patented May 15, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
-- This invention relates to an improved fountain paint brush and more particularly to a brush having a controlled fiow of paint according to the surface requirements to be painted.
This invention has for its principal object a brush having a flexible handle with a rocker valve mounted therein to remain normally closed and intermittently and automatically opened by means of the painters hand through the flexible handle in the normal manual operation of brushing paint on the surface of an object.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a flexible apron to tightly grip around the bristles of a brush attached to the crosshead of a handle, and extend over a considerable portion of the length of the bristles in a flexible gripping manner to prevent the paint from flowing back on the brush and for painting in any position especially in a substantially vertical or overhead position.
Another object of the present invention is to provide external means for adjustment of the compression spring of the paint flow rocker valve whereby the quantity and paint flow may be properly regulated according to the viscosity of the paint fluid.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved flexible shell to provide a divided fountain handle with parts that can be removed for access to cleaning the interior thereof.
With these and other objects in view the improved invention further consists of combinations of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, described in the specification and more fully pointed out in the claims appended hereto or by amendment.
Figure 1 is a side View in elevation illustrating the improved fountain paint brush with certain parts broken away to illustrate internal construction.
Figure 2 is an end view in elevation of Figure 1.
The crosshead 3 has the upper end of the bristles 4 normally embedded therein in the usual and well known manner, the bristles being of usual length extend downward therefrom and have a flexible apron 5 tightly gripping around the bristles 4 for substantially half the length thereof, the upper end of the apron being tightly stretched around the cross head 3 is seated in the depression 6 of the crosshead and prevents the paint from flowing on the outside of the crosshead and bristles before it has reached the useful part of the bristles for spreading the paint.
The crosshead 3 has a pipe coupling I rigidly secured in the upper portion thereof, the coupling 1 having a tube 8 extendin downwardly therefrom and through the crosshead into the bristles 4. The tube 8 has the lower end 9 thereof closed and small orifices II] for proper distribution of the paint.
The rigid stock handle I I has a tube I2 embedded therein and extending downwardly therethrough to screw into the coupling I, the lock nut I3 being on the tube I 2 and tightened against the coupling I for the purpose of holding the crosshead in proper position on the handle. The upper end of the tube I2 is threaded to receive the pipe bushing It, the bushing and upper end of pipe forming a seat l5 for the rocker valve I 6 that is normally held closed by a compression spring IT. The spring I! is held in position and adjusted by a valve stem screw l8 threaded into the valve I6 at I9 and extending through the upper end 20 of the flexible shell handle 2|, the upper end of the valve stem screw I8 having a head 22 adapted to be turned by the fingers of a pointer. The flexible shell handle 2| engages the stock handle II at threads 26 to seal the chamber formed thereby and retain paint under pressure.
A valve guide sleeve 23 is threaded on one end thereof and screwed on pipe bushing M, the sleeve is embedded in the stock handle, open on the upper end thereof, and has a tube 24 secured thereto for a hose connection, the hose 25 being connected to the tube 24 and supplying paint from a remote pressure vessel.
In the operation paint is supplied through a hose to the fountain paint brush from an outside source, preferably from a pressure vessel. The paint flows through the tube 24, sleeve 23 and into the flexible shell handle 2| where it remains under static pressure until the flexible handle .is tilted slightly in any direction from the polar axis of the valve stem releasing the paint to flow through the tubes 8 and I 2. A small quantity of paint will then flow through the small orifices I!) to the bristles 4 and be confined within the apron 5 until it substantially 3 4 What I claim as new and desire to secure by member and head to said bristles, a valve, Said Letters Patent i valve seated on said tube opening toward said 1.
