2 Claims.
This invention relates to stands or supports for garbage cans and the like, wherein garbage cans are permanently supported in elevated positions, and in particular a stand that may be stationary or provided with rollers, wherein the can remains permanently on the stand, except when being emptied by a garbage collector, the complete stand with the can thereon being moved from its normal position adjacent the back door to a position at the sidewalk or street, and the can with the cover removed and suspended in the stand is only removed from the stand to empty the contents thereof, wherein, after emptying, it is returned to its position upon the stand.
The usual garbage cans are subjected to severe punishment, because they are often placed upon uneven surfaces and are knocked around, not only by the owner, but also by the garbage collector, and consequently the life of a garbage can is comparatively short. With this thought in mind, this invention contemplates a permanent stand for a garbage can wherein the can remains on the stand and is transported from one position to another by the stand, which may be provided with rollers similar to a hand truck, thereby not only protecting the can but facilitating moving thereof.
Many garbage cans remain upon wet ground which causes the lower ends thereof and the connections at the side to rust, and with this thought The object of this invention is, therefore, to
provide a permanent stand for garbage cans and the like, wherein the can is supported in an elevated position and the supporting surface remains substantially horizontal.
The covers of garbage cans are also subjected to severe punishment, and are sometimes blown away and lost. For this reason, another object of this invention is to provide a garbage can stand in which the cover of the can is permanently attached to the stand and the stand includes means for suspending the cover removed from the can or in the open position.
The usual garbage can is also subjected to abuse from dogs and the like removing the covers and upsetting the cans, and to overcome this, another object of the present invention is to provide a garbage can stand in which the cover and can are securely held and thereby protected from abuse by dogs and the like.
Another object of this invention is to provide A further object of this invention is to provide a stand for garbage cans and the like which is of a comparatively simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects in view, the invention embodies a substantially horizontal platform with vertically disposed uprights and means at the upper ends of the uprights for holding the cover of the can in both the closed and open positions. The platform may also be provided with wheels and a handle by which it may readily be moved from one position to another.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Figure l isa view showing a front elevation of the garbage can stand with a can illustrated therein.
Figure 2 is a view showing a side elevation of the stand also showing a can therein and illustrating the cover of the can in the open position in dotted lines.
Figure 3 is a plan view looking downward upon the upper end of the stand illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail showing a sectional plan on line 44 of Figure 1, illustrating the connections between one of the side uprights of the stand and cover of the garbage can.
Figure 5 is a detail taken on line 55 of Figure 1, showing the garbage can cover-supporting elements.
Figure 6 is a detail showing a vertical section through the upper end of the stand, illustrating a hook element for supporting the cover of the garbage can.
Figure '7 is a view showing a rear elevation of a garbage can stand of an alternate design, wherein the elements of the stand are formed of tubular members.
Figure 8 is a view showing a side elevation of the stand shown in Figure 7, with parts broken away and shown in section, and with the coversupporting means illustrated in dotted lines, in the position of supporting the cover removed from the upper end of the can.
Figure 9 is a sectional plan showing the stand illustrated in Figures 7 and 8, taken on line 9--9 of Figure 8.
Figure 10 is a plan view of a garbage can stand showing a further modification, wherein the stand is formed of tubular members and supported on wheels.
Figure 11 is a view showing a front elevation of the garbage can stand shown in Figure 10.
Figure 12 is a viewshowing a side elevation of the garbage can stand illustrated in Figures 10 and 11, showing the cover dotted in the open position.
Figure 13 is a detail showing a sectionzthrough: an edge of the platform of the stand illustrating the connection of an upright at one side of the stand to the platform.
Figure 14 is a detail showing a projecting lug or hearing at the side of the cover ofithe can by which the cover is slidably mounted on a member. of the frame of. the stand.
Referring now, to theqdrawingsj; wherein= like reference characters indicate corresponding parts, the garbage can stand of this invention includes uprights ill-and H at the'sides and I2 at the rear; and the upper ends of: the uprightslil and' H are connected by-a cross-bar I3, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Intheuppersurfaceofthe cross bar- I3 is a-recess- Min which a tongue 15 of a short cross-ba l6 isfpositioned; wherein the barlfi connects the crossbar l3to the upper end of the upright I2;
The'lowenends of the: uprights i0; I land. i2 are provided with supporting gussets or brackets.

In this design the members 38 and 39 are tubular and upwardly extending members 45 and 46 are slidable therein with the lower ends thereof held in slots 41 by pins 48, as shown in Figure 8. Thelslots and. pins are similarzin' both members, and the same reference numerals are, therefore, used for both. The upper ends of the members 45 and 46 are attached to the sides of a cover 49 ofttheigarbage can by brackets 50 and =5I, as illustrated in Figures '7 and 8. It will be noted that in the stand of this design the can remains permanently in'an elevated position in relation to the ground on the platform of the stand, and is In the design illustrated: in Figures: l0ito'v 14,1
