. HEAD BLOCK FOR SIDE BAR BUGGIES.
No. 255,288. v Patented Mar. 21,1882.
N. PETERS. Photo-Lithographer. wuhin mn. D Q 7 UNITED STATES PATENT I OFFICE.
ALONZO D. HIOKOK, OF COLUMBUS CITY, IOWA.
HEAD-BLOCK FOR SII-DE-BAR BUGGIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,288, dated March 21, 1882.
' Application filed November 14, 1881. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern a I Beit known that I, ALONZO D. HIOKOK, ot'Oolumbus City, in the county ofLouisa and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side-Bar Buggies; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in side-bar vehicles; and it consists in the combination of a metallic block or plate, which is secured to the top of the frontaxle, and which forms a bearing for the lifth-wheel,with a nietallic hcad block, which is pivoted upon a tubular projection formed upon the top of the plate and secured in place by means ot'v the kingbolt, which passes through the projection on the top of the plate.
The object of my invention is to make the head-block of iron and to form upon it supports for the front ends of the side bars, and to so construct the parts that they will be greatly simplified in construction and cheapened in cost.
Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 3 is a plan view.
A represents the front axle, which has secured to its top, at its center, the metallic plate B. Upon the top of this plate, atits center, is formed'thc tubular projection O, which forms the pivot for the head-block D to turn upon. Up through this tubular projection is passed the king-bolt F, the upper end of which receives a nut, Gr, upon the top of the headblock. This metallic plate A forms the bearing upon which the fifth wheel G, which forms a part of the head-block, rests. The head-block D is cast, stamped, rolled, or otherwise formed from any suitable kind of iron orsteel, and which is hollowed out on its under side its entire length, with the exception of at its center, and where the fifth-wheel is formed or secured thereto, for the purpose of making the head-block as light as possible. There the pivot passes through this'headblock there is made a hole just sufficiently large to receive it, and upon the top of the headblock there is formed a flange or. projection, so as to make a suflicient thickness of metal between the top of the pivotal projection and the screw which is screwed down upon the top of the king-bolt. The fifth-wheel can either be cast or formed with the headblock or secured thereto in any suitable manner.
Formed with or secured to each end of the head-block, and extending horizontally backward therefrom, are the arms or supports I, which are also hollowed out, so as to make them as light as possible, and which form rests orsupports for the side bars. These side bars are both bolted to these rests or supports by means of bolts and clips, or by any other suitable devices which may be preferred forthispurpose. These rests or supports enable the side bars to be secured to the head-block much more socurely and perfectly than can possibly be done in any other manner.
By means of the construction here shown a reach is entirely dispensed with, the construc tion of the different parts is greatly cheapened and strengthened, and the vehicle improved in every way.
Having thus describedmy invention, I claim- In a side-bar buggy, the combination of the axle having the plate B G secured to its top, the headed king-bolt F, secured in place by the plate, the metallic head-block D, having the fifth-wheel formed as a solid part thereof, and having the supports I secured to its ends, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereofl affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. V A. D. HIOKOK.
Witnesses A. H. MGCANDLESS, O. B. McOANnLEss.
