WAGON BOX ELEVATING AND TILTING DEVICE Filed Sept. 16, 1947 l\ oooooooobo'ooo- INVENTOR.
Patented Apr. 24, 1951 OFFICE- WAGON BOX ELEVATING AND TILTING DEVICE Clark F. Walsh, Charles City, Iowa Application September 16, 1947, Serial No. 774,223
1 Claim. 1
The present invention is directed generally to a novel and improved wagon box elevating and tilting device, but more particularly to a simple portable and improved construction of a lifting device, Which will straddle or arch the tongue of a wagon and effectively elevate or tilt the wagon box to desired height, to dispense or discharge substantially the complete contents therefrom by gravitation.
The invention further contemplates as one of its objects a new and improved type of a wagon box lift in combination with a conventional form of hydraulic jack supported by an arched frame straddling the tongue of the wagon, and at the same time one which is easily attached to or detached from the front ends of the wagon boxes.
The invention further contemplates as one of its objects a novel support for a conventional type of hydraulic jack which may be placed in close proximity to the swingin forward edge of wagon box with guides provided for on the jack support to permit a free movement of the swing ing wagon box without any obstruction.
These and other objects are accomplished by providing a construction and an arrangement of the various parts in the manner hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a conventional wagon and wagon box with the box in raised or elevated position showing my improved lifting device or jack connected therewith;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in cross section showing my improved lifting device; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary front elevational View of the lifting device.
In illustrating one form of my invention, I have shown the same in connection with a conventional form of farm wagon which includes, briefly, front and rear supporting wheels it and II journaled on the conventional axles and a connecting reach l2 connecting the front and rear structure of the wagon together. The front and rear axle structures of the wagon are provided with the usual front and rear bolsters or beams l3 and M respectively. The rear bolster, of course, supports and forms a pivot for the wagon box in a manner well understood in the art. The Wagon box in this instance is generally indicated by the reference character it. The front bolster 13 forms the support for the wagon box when it is in its normal horizontal position, The wagon is provided with the usual tongue and tongue support, generally indicated by the reference character l1.
My improved lifting device includes an arch support which straddles and extends over the tongue and tongue support of the wagon and is generally indicated by the reference character l8. This arch support comprises a horizontal transverse channel member I 9, to the outer ends of which are secured vertically extending pipes and posts 29. These posts. 20 are welded to the underside of the channel [9. Secured to the lower ends of each of the pipes or posts 2!]; are nonskid discs or cups 22 which are adapted to rest on the ground. Secured to the rear side of the channel I 9 adjacent the opposite ends thereof are curved guide bars 23 which have their lower ends welded to each of the posts 20 as shown at 24. These guid bars 23 are curved or arcuate in shape and have their upper ends projecting above the channel [9. The guide bars are adapted to engage a horizontal angle member 25 secured to the lower forward edge of the wagon box I6 50 as to prevent the jack support from obstructing the up and down movement in the raising and lowering of the wagon box. Mounted on the center portion of the top side of the channel member I9 is a conventional post type hydraulic jack, generally indicated by the reference character 26. The jack in this instance is preferably, though not necessarily, of the hydraulically operated type, but other types of jacks may be employed in connection with my invention. This" jack is provided with the usual hand operating lever 21 and a vertical tube 28. Reciprocably mounted within the tube 28 is a lifting shaft 29. Telescopically mounted on the post 28 and secured to the lifting shaft 29 of the jack is a lifting pipe or telescoping sleeve 30 which is secured to the upper end of the shaft 29 by a nut 30'. Secured to the forward intermediate portion of the sleeve 30 is a vertically extending steel strap 3! which has a plurality of uniformly spaced apart apertures 32. Any one of these apertures 32 are adapted to receive a rearwardly projecting prong or pin 33 which is angularly disposed and secured to a ring 34'. The ring 34 embraces the sleeve 30 and the strap 3 I. Formed integrally with and extending downwardly from the ring 34 is a hook 35 which is adapted to engage an angularly disposed eye-bolt 36. The eye-bolt 36 extends through an aperture in and is loosely secured to the angle member 25 by a nut 3'1. From the above description it will be seen that the hook 35 and ring 34 may be vertically adjusted to various positions in the various interference.
apertures 32 on the strap 3| so as to accommodate a, variety of different wagon boxes whose height from the ground may vary considerably.
Summarizing the advantages and functions of operation of my improved wagon box lifting and tilting device, it will readily be seen that by providing an arch support for the hydraulic jack which straddles the tongue of the wagon, the necessity of attachment with the wagon bolster is not only avoided, but also the jack proper can be placed in close proximity with the end of the wagon box to more efficiently and effectively raise the box. In this connection it will also be noted that the guide bars on the jack support will permit the free swinging movement of the'box without obstruction. If the jack and support are placed too closely in relation to the wagon box, these guide bars will engage the angle member 25 and swing the support and jack forwardly on the discs 22 and permit the passage of the box without The advantage of quick detachability of the device from one wagon to another affords a very simple, efiicient and easily manipulated lift for this particular purpose.
While in the above specification I have described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will, of course, be understood that the same is capable of modification and that modification may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the following claim.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A lifting mechanism for lifting and tilting a wagon box comprising an arched frame, a lifting jack mounted on said frame having an extensible member associated therewith, a telescoping sleeve embracing said last named member and secured to the upper end thereof, a vertically extending steel strap'secured to one side of said sleeve and having a plurality of vertically spaced apart apertures therein, a ring member embracing said sleeve, a pin secured to said ring and adapted to engage any one of the apertures in said strap, a hook member carried by said ring and engageable with one end of said box, and a hand operated lever located adjacent said arched frame and operatively related to said lifting jack for raising said wagon box.
