The present invention relates to protectors for trouser type garments, and is concerned primarily with a protector which provides a bib in the front that extends upwardly substantially to the waistband of the wearer.

In the co-pending application of H. Louise Krell, Serial No. 89,387, filed April 25, 1949, and entitled Protector for Trouser Type Garments, there is illustrated and described a protector of the same general type with which this invention is concerned. In the protector of the aforementioned application a pair of elements are provided in each set and each pair is adapted to cover the lower portion of the leg of a pair of trousers, slacks, orsimilar garments.

When protectors of this type are worn under neath a raincoat, there is a tendency for the raincoat to open in the front, and there is not adequate protection from the zone between the knees and the waist. With this condition in mind, the. present invention has in view as its foremost objective the provision of a garment protector of the type indicated, which consists essentially of a leg-enclosing portion which extends above the knee of the wearer and from which projects upwardly a bib, the upper edge of which is adapted to be secured to the person of the wearer substantially at his waistband.

With a pair of protectors provided with bibs in the front, it is entirely practical to anchor these bibs to the belt which supports the trousers I be secured to the upper edge of the bib, and

through which pass the belt which supports the trousers being protected. Each of these loops may be provided with a clip or detachable fastening elements that may be employed in the event a belt is not available.

In providing a protector of the type with which this invention is concerned, it is important that the garment present a finished appearance. In order to achieve this end, the bib is provided with an innerlining which is stitched to the bib around the edges thereof, with the edges of the seams being turned inwardly. This aiiords a doublewall construction in the bib and there is a neatlyfinished appearance.

It is desirable to eliminate sagging at the rear of the protectors by providing means for tightening the protectors around the garment being protected after they are placed thereover, hence another highly important object of the invention is to provide a protector of the type indicated,

with means at the upper edge of the rear portion for constricting the effective girth of the protector at this location. This object is achieved by placing a pair of complemental elements of a snap fastener at each side of the protector where the upper edge of the rear part is joined to the bib. These snap fasteners are ordinarily left in an open position as the protectors are being donned, and either one or both of them are closed to constrict the girth to the degree required.

Various other more detailed objects and advantages of the invention such as arise in connection with carrying out the above noted ideas in a practical embodiment will, in part become apparent, and in part be hereinafter stated as the description of the invention proceeds.

The invention, therefore, comprises a protector for trouser type garments, which consists of a tubular member having a bib extending upwardly from the front portion thereof with the upper edge of the bib carrying anchoring loops. A pair of complemental elements of a snap fastener are assembled in this tubular member at the top thereof at each side. These fastening members are adapted to be joined to constrict the girth of the tubular member at this location.

Figure 1 is a front View showing a pair of garment protectors that are designed in accordance with the precepts of this invention as applied to a man wearing a pair of trousers.

Referring now to the draWing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts and first more particularly to Figures 1 and 2, a man is represented at M and is shown as wearing a pair of trousers it which are supported on the person of the man therein by belt I l. Each of the garment protectors P1 and P2 comprises a tubular main body portion l2 which extends from a lower edge I3 to a top edge 14 that passes around the rear portion of the respective trouser leg. The distance between these edges l3 and [4 will, of course, depend upon the particular size of the garment being protected. This tubular body portion I2 is formed with seam-s l5 at each side which mark off a rear panel l6 and a front panel [1.

The front panel I! is continued up above the top edge It of the rear panel 19 in the'form of a bib H3 having an upper edge !9.

Secured to this upper edge I9 are a pair of loops 20 and 2| which preferably are rendered adjustable in a well-known manner by the buckle elements shown at 22, and each of which carries an appropriate form of clip or fastening member 23. As shown in Figure 1, the loops 2!}. and 21 receive the belt so that the bib 18 is suspended from the belt. In the event a belt is not available, such as when the wearer uses suspenders rather than a belt, the fastening members 23 may be employed to secure the upper edge of this bib 13 in position on the person of the wearer.

As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the bib I8 is provided with an innerlining 24, which is secured thereto by the inwardly turned hems 25. This provides outer seams along the side edges 26 and top edge [9, which give a finished appearance.

At the top of each side seam l5 and on eitherside thereof are cooperating elements of a snap fastener designated 2? and 28. In the open position these elements 21 and 28 are spaced apart so as to permit the protectors to be opened to the maximum extent at the zone of the rear panel edge It. After the protectors have been put on over the trousers 19, the snap fastener at one side may be closed in an obvious manner to tighten the upper edge [4 around the trouser leg to eliminate sagging and present a neat appearance. If the closing of the snap fastener at one side does not achieve the desired result, then the one at the other side may be closed, which further constricts the edge [4 to attain the desired result.

While a preferred specific embodiment of the invention is hereinbefore set forth, it is to be clearly understood that the invention is not to be limited to the exact constructions, mechanisms, and devices illustrated and described because various modifications of these details may be provided in putting the invention into practice Within the purview of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. In a protector for garments of the trouser type, a tubular leg-enclosing portion comprising front and rear panels joined by side seams with the front panel projecting above the rear panel to provide a front bib, and elements of a snap fastener carried by said front and rear panels on opposite sides of one of said seams substantially at the top of said rear panel.

2. In a protector for garments of the trouser type, a tubular leg-enclosing portion comprising front and rear panels joined by side seams with the front panel projecting above the rear panel to provide a'front bib, and complemental elements of a snap fastener arranged at the top of each of said seams with one element of each fastener being located on the front panel and the complementalelement of that fastener on the rear panel.
