Description

Patented Apr. 17, 1951 STRAP ANCHOR PLATE Joseph P. Mierzwa, Chicago, 111., assignor to A. J.
Gerrard & Company, Chicago, 111., a corporation of Illinois Application December 22, 1947, Serial No. 793,242
The invention relates generally to anchor plates, and more particularly to anchor plates for holding the ends of steel strapping or the like.
It is common practice in loading box cars to employ steel strapping where possible to bind the load or portions of it together, and it is common practice to anchor the ends of such strapping to the sides or the bottom of the car to brace the load, as well as prevent undue shifting thereof. If plates or other means are employed and fastened to the car by means of nails or other similar means, it is generally necessary to pry the nails out to release the anchor plate, and oftentimes during such operation the sides or bottom of the car are damaged due to splitting of the wood, etc.
The present invention has among its objects the production of an anchor plate for fastening the ends of the steel strapping to a supporting surface by means of nails, drive screws or the like, in which it is unnecessary to remove the mounting nails or other means to release the plate and strap end during removal thereof, whereby the mounting may then be driven flush with the wall or other surface, thus eliminating the possibility of injury to the same.
A further object of the invention is the production of such a plate which is so designed that it may be readily engaged with a hammer or the like to facilitate the disconnection thereof from the mounting means.
A further object of the invention is the production of such a plate which is so constructed that, if desired, it may be locked in position until the time of disconnection, and readily unlocked when desired.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts:
Fig. l is a plan view of an anchor plate embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the plate illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a mounted plate and strap end; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken approximately on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
2 Claims. (01. 24-222):
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Fig. 1, the embodiment of the invention illustrated comprises a substantially rectangular plate indicated generally by the numeral l .of suitable material, having an elongated rectangularly shaped slot 2 therein, of a size to receive'the particular strapping material to be employed. The plate is provided with a plurality of openings 3 which, in-the present embodiment of the invention, are illustrated as of more or less keyhole shape, each having a small'. narrow elongated portion 4 and an enlarged generally circular portion'5, the portions 4and 5 being correspondingly positioned so that the portions 4 extend towards one end-of the plate, and the portions 5 towards the opposite end of the plate; .The width oftlie narrow portions 4 of the openings '3'is slightly larger than theshank diameter of'the mounting hall or other means to be employed, ,whilethe portions 5 are of sufficient size to permit thehead of the mounting means to pass therethrough. It will be apparent that the relative dimensions and proportions of the openings 3 will depend upon the size of the mounting means employed. 7 As illustrated in Fig. 2, the-ends 6 and 1 of the plate are provided with outwardly extending flange portions 8 and 9 respectively, the fianget being of suflicient height to act as an abutment which may be struck by a hammer or the like to slide the plate along the supporting surface.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, the anchor plate illustrated may be utilized in the following manner:
The ends of the band or strapping S is bent back upon itself and the free end inserted in the slot 2, thereby hooking the strap on one edge of the plate, following which, the plate is rolled over a half turn to partially wind the strap about the plate, after which it is placed in position on the mounting surface and nails N positioned in the portions 4 of the openings 3 and driven down so that the heads H of the nails engage the upper face of the plate adjacent the portion 4 of the opening 3. The nails are so located that when all of the same have been driven, they will be at the end of the narrow portions 4 of the respective openings. If it is desired to provide additional means for preventing shifting of the plate I, a nail may be driven into the supporting surface as indicated at A, so that the head of the nail will be positioned below the upper edge of the flange 9 and abut the end 1 of the plate, thus preventing a movement of the plate relative to the nails positioned in the narrow portions 4 of the openings 3.
When it is desired to remove the plate, it is merely necessary to drive the nail A flush with bring the heads of the nails flush ,with the mounting surface. It will be apparent that no damage will be done to the supporting surface by driving the nails flush therewith, and that if it is desired to withdraw the nails, this may be 7 accomplished with considerably less difiiculty than if the nails had tobe pryed 01f at the time of removal of the anchor, plate.
' .n will likewise be apparent tha by providing the flange 9, the nailA will firmly abut the end of the plate, thus securely holding the same in position. V V l It will likewise be apparent that as the plate may be removed without damage, it may readily be re-employedv for. the purposes intended.
Having thus described my invention, it is ob-i vious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence, I do not wish to be understood aslimiting myself to the'exact form, construction, arrangement andv combination of parts .hereinshown and described or uses mentioned.v
What I claim as new Letters Patent is: I: V
1. In an anchor plate. forstrapping, the combination of a flat plate member having an elongated slot therein for receiving the free end of a band to be engaged with said plate, said plate having a plurality of relatively narrow openings therethrough extending in the same direction as said slot, and adapted to receive and engage mounting means for mounting said plate on a and desire to secure by supporting surface, said openings each terminat ing at one of their corresponding ends in a relatively large portion of a size to permit free pas-- sage therethrough of the respective mounting means, said plate having an outwardly raised portion at the end thereof adjacent the relatively large portionsof said openings to provide a toolengageable abutment, and provided with an outwardly raised portion at the opposite end of said :plate adapted to be engaged by means secured to such supporting means for preventing said plate from shifting relative to mounting means positioned in the narrow portions of said openings.
2. In an anchor plate for strapping, the com-' bination of a fiat plate member having an elon gated 51st therein for receiving the free end of a band to be engaged with said plate, said plate having a plurality of relatively narrow openings therethrough extending in the same direction as said slot, and adapted to receive and engage mounting means for mounting said plate to a supporting surface, said openings each terminating at one of their corresponding ends in a relatively large opening of a size to permit free passage therethrough of the respective mounting means when aligned with the respective relatively large openings, said plate having an outwardly raised portion at the end thereof adjacent the relatively large openings for'engagement with a suitable tool and provided with an outwardly raised portion at the opposite end of saidplate adapted to engagemeans for retaining said plate in mounted position on such mounting means.
