Jghn ielsen Patented Apr. 3, 1951 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE ALL-WEATHER RECORDING BOARD John P. Nielsen, Bogalu sa, La. I Application July 21, 1949; erial No. 106,00].
This invention relates to an all-weather recording board for outdoor use by check clerks,
shipping clerks, railroad yard clerks and others who must make records out of doors during all seasons of the year.
An object of the invention, therefore, is to provide a clip board, or recording board which is provide, in an all-weather recording board having a transparent cover, a hand-hold or grip under the writing surface of the board.
A further object of the invention is to provide,
in an all-weather recording board, feet or rests for the board, said feet forming a sloping base.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clipboard of the type set forth in the preceding paragraph wherein the said feet are constructed to provide pen or pencil holders.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a check board having a clip for holding one'or more papersinposition for writing thereon, said board being provided with an opening adjacent the clip and,.between the clip and the upper end of the board wherebythe clip may be readily manipulated by the hand of the operator. for readily changing records on said board. TA'n additional object of the invention is to provide the structure-set fo'rth'in the next preceding paragraph, and wherein side walls are provided having at least one opening in one of said side walls adjacent to the opening in the top of the board for ready access to a hand-hold secured to the underside of said top.
Other objects will appear hereinafter throughout the specification.
In the drawings,
Figure-1 is a perspective view of the device.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the device shown in Figure 1, taken on the lines 2-2 but with the transparent cover removed, and
Figure 3 is a front plan view of the device shown in Figure 2.
3 Claims. (0]. 281-44) As shown in the drawings, the all-weather recording board comprises a clip board designated by the numeral [0 having an upper surface l2. The board is provided with substantially vertical .a hinge pin 24.
sides M which terminate in rolledup ends l6. These ends provide holders for pencils or pens, to' thereby make such writing instruments readily accessible for writing on records which are supported on the surface of the board. The board including the sides I l may be constructed of any suitable material such as sheet metal.
The spring actuated clip is shown at I8 and this clip may be of well-known construction such as shown inthe patent to Pryor, 1,642,385, Sep tember 13,1927.
The rear edge 20 of the board is provided; with curled portions 22 which provide a housing for The hinge pin supports for rotation the hinge 26 which supports the cover 28'. This cover may be constructed of any suitable transparent material, such as the plastic sheet shown. The transparent sheet is provided with folded or creased sides that have straight sur-' faces 32, which surfaces form with the hinge the support for the plastic cover when it is in its operative position. In use, the lower edges 32 of the sheet are parallelto the lower sides M of the board. During clear weather the cover 28 may be rotated on the hinge pin 22 until it rests on its rear side 34.
The underside of the clip board is provided with hand-hold 44 extending longitudinally of the center thereof. The hand-hold is held to the under surface" of, the board .by'suitable means such as by the screws 46.. Grooves 48 are pro-i vided onthe opposite. sides of the hand-hold which latter may be constructed of wood or plasticmaterial. A cut-out portion 36 isprovided in at least one, and preferably both, of the sides l4. Sucha cut-away portion permitsv ac' eess with ease to the hand-holdM and also aid in proVidinga-lighter construction. 3
In orderto change a filled out or partially filled out sheet which is held in place by the clip 18 on the upper surface l2, and without raising the cover 28 to any extent, one of the operators hands is inserted up through the opening 38 in the writing surface I2 which rises just rearwardly of the clip l8. The hand inserted through the opening 38 may then operate the handle 48 to release the paper on the board. Since the hand that grasps the clip l8 will also support the board, the operators other hand may be inserted through the opening 42 to change the paper released. Another sheet is then inserted on the top board and the clip is released in order to permit it to hold the sheet in position. It can be seen that the papers on the board are kept dry throughout the changing thereof.
The cut-out portion or portions 36 are provided in order to save material, permit a lighter structure and permit access to the hand-hold M by a hand of the user of the board. Holding the board at 44 will adequately support the board and permit the user to use his other hand to write on paper placed on the upper surface.
It will be noted by referring to Figures 1 and 2 that the vertical sides 14 are slanting. This not only provides a more convenient writing surface but also facilitates the drainage of rain down the surface of the cover, and it will be noted that the cover is higher at its rear end than at its front end.
The forward portions of the sides I4 are provided with supporting means, here shown as notches 50 for the support of the forward edges of the cover, to thereby permit the insertion and withdrawal of the operators hand and to hold the cover away from the hand during writing.
The removal of the hinge pin 24 permits the cover 28 to be detached from the board, so that the board can be used without the cover in clear weather. It will be appreciated that the single embodiment shown is for the purpose of illustration and is not to be construed in a limiting sense, and that physical embodiments of the invention may be constructed of different sizes and shapes and of any suitable material without departing from the spirit of the invention. I desire to be limited in the practice of this invention only to the extent set forth by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An all-weather recording board of the type having a cover detachably mounted thereon and spaced therefrom, comprising a flat upper surface, a spring actuated clip on said board for supporting a record on said upper surface, said board having an upper end, an opening in said board between said upper end and said spring clip to permit access to said spring clip by a hand of the user of the board in order to change a record, said board having vertical sides for supporting the board on a desk or the like, a hand-hold secured to the under side of said upper surface, at least one of said sides having a cut-away portion adjacent said hand-hold to permit access to said hand-hold by a hand of the user of the board.
'2. An all-weather recording board of the type having a cover detachably mounted thereon and spaced therefrom, comprising a flat upper surface, a spring actuated clip on said board for supporting a record on said upper surface, said board having an upper end, an opening in said board between said upper end and said spring clip to permit access to said spring clip by a hand of the user of the board in order to change a record, said board having vertical sides for supporting the board on a desk or the like, a hand-hold secured to the under side of said upper surface, at least one of said sides having a cutaway portion adjacent said hand-hold to permit access to said hand-hold by a hand of the user a of the board and supporting means on said vertical sides for supporting the front end of said cover in vertically spaced relationship from said board, said last named means comprising struck up notches which extend outwardly from said sides.
3. An all-Weather recording board of the type having a cover detachably mounted thereon and spaced therefrom, comprising'a fiat upper surface, a spring actuated clip on said board for supporting a record on said upper surface, a said board having a front and rear end, an opening in said board between said upper end and said spring'clip to permit access to said spring clip by a hand of the user of the board in order to change a record, said board having vertical sides for supporting the board on a desk or the like, a hand-hold secured to the under side of said upper surface, at least one of said sides having a cut-away portion adjacent said hand-hold to permit access to said hand-hold by a hand of the user of the board and supporting means on said vertical sides for supporting the front end of said cover in vertically spaced relationship from said board, said last named means comprising struck up notches which extend outwardly from said sides, said sides'slanting from front to rear of the board to facilitate drainage of rain from said cover and having end portions rolled up to provide a receptacle for a writing implement.
