UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTE A.-GOUBERT, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
AUTOMATIC DISCHARGING APPARATUS FOR BONE-BLACK KILNS, dc.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,474, dated March '7, 1882.
Application filed July 9, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUSTE A. GOUBERT, of Jersey City, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Automatic Discharging Apparatus for Bone-Black Kilns, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class of apparatus used for dischargin g in uniform quantities granular or doughy materials from pipes, bins, or tanks but I will describe it more particularly in its application to certain kilns for the revivification of bone-black or animalcharcoal, in which vertical retorts are made to revolve upon their own axis. On these kilns the apparatus heretofore used for discharging the retort-s has been that described in Letters Patent No. 150,821, granted to Buchanan and Vickers, dated May 12, 1874.
My improvement, as applied to these kilns, consists in one or more arms or blades secured to the revolving shaft or spindle and inclined In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspectiveelevation of my apparatus. Fig. 2 shows the apparatus with the upper part out oif, and illustrates the mode in which the material is forced over the edge of the disk. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through a bone-black kiln, of which the retorts are revolved upon their own axis through the shaft or spindle 0, sho ing my apparatus in connection with such a kiln.
A is a. worm-wheel, keyed on the spindle O, and through it imparting motion to the vertical retort, and also to the whole apparatus.
B B are sheet-iron pipes called coolers, in which the charcoal is cooled after it leaves the retort and before it comes in contact with the air.
D is a disk on which the column of charcoal is resting.
E E arewings or arms bent backward from (No model.)
thirty-five degrees, and there remains stationary. Now, ifwe revolve the apparatus in the direction shown by the arrow, the arms E E act as rotating wedges and push out the coal toward the edge of the disk, over which it falls continuously as long as the machine rotates.
The arms E E are shown on the drawings as being curved; but they may be straight with similar eflect.
Modifications of this apparatus can of course be made to suit various purposes, and the arms, if revolved in the opposite direction, could be made to discharge at the center of the disk.
Instead of the shaft Obeing inside of the arms E E, it may be enlarged considerably, so as to form a pipe, and the arms E be fastened to that pipe on the inside. It would be, notwithstanding, but a modification of my invention.
The wheel and coolers are merely shown so as to illustrate one application of my invention, but are not essential parts of the apparatus.
1 claim as my invention 1. In an automatic discharging apparatus, the wings or arms E E, bent backward from the direction of motion, in combination with-
