Description
Feb. 13, 1951 H. BACHLI EIAL WATER AERATING DEVICE Filed Sept. 22, 1948 Patented Feb. 13, 1951 WATER AERATING DEVICE Herman Bachli and Harry S. Shapiro, Chicago, Ill., assignors to; Chicago Specialty Mfg. Co. Inc., Chicago, IlL, a corporation of Illinois Application September 22, 1948, Serial No. 50,476
1 Claim. 1
Our invention relates to water aerating device device for aerating the water.
More specifically, our invention comprise a device adapted to be connected to an ordinary water faucet or tap by means of threaded connection therewith or by means of a suitable adaptor, the device being provided with aperture arrangements for introduction of air bubbles into the stream of water to accomplish the object of rendering the water substantially soft as will be evidenced when the hand is projected into the stream; also the object. of increasing the volume f water while dissipating therefrom cloudiness relation of the several parts constituting our device whereby the same can be manufactured at an economical cost and assembled and disassembled by one other than a skilled mechanic.
Another equally importantobject of the invention is the locating at the outlet of the device screen elements of relatively fine mesh arranged in opposed relation with respect to each other and dished in opposite directions to provide therebetween a mixing chamber from which the stream emits in an even flow with increased volume and without splashing.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred, formof construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view illustrating one form of construction of our invention in attachment with a water faucet or tap;
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view (less the tap) taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the several parts of the device illustrated in Fig. 1 showing the same in exploded relation with respect to each other;
Fig. 4 is a top plan View of a connector ring employed in the device of our invention showing a modification over that employed in Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view of the same taken substantially on line 55 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a sectional detail view of a connector ring similar to that shown in Fig. 5 but showing a slightly modified form of construction;
Fig. '7 is a plan view of the same taken substantially on line l'i of Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is a sectional detail view of an adaptor showing the same attached to a faucet; and
elongated openings I 5.
Fi 9 is a. side elevational view of the device illustrated in Fig. 1 showing the same attached to a faucet or water tap by means of the adaptor shown in Fig. 8.
Referring more specifically to the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, we provide a connector ring in. This connector ring I0 intermediate its end portions is provided with a transversely extending web 1 I. Either formed as an integral part of this web or as a separate unit for frictional connection thereto by projection through a centrally located opening [2 formed in the web, is a tube l3 closed at one end as at I4.
This tube 13 is cylindrical in form and is provided in it cylindrical walls with a number of These openings [5 extend above and below the web II for the passage of water from the chamber It provided above the web H, through the tube l3 and into the chamber I! provided by an intermediate ring l8.
This ring 18 provides a threaded neck I9 which is threaded into the connector ring [0. Below this neck [9 is provided an annular flange 20. At the junction between this flange 2e and the neck [9 are provided a number of spaced elongated slots 2|.
The flange 20 provides an upper tapered surface 22 which telescopes into the ring I 0 and provides together with the bevelled edge portion 23 of the ring I0 an annular inlet 24 through which air is drawn for passage through the openings 2| for mixing with the water flow through the chamber 25 provided bythe intermediate ring 18. ,Below this flange 20. the ring [8 provides a thread-bearing end portion 26. On this end por tion 23 is threaded a nozzle 21. The nozzle 2-! provides an annular groove 28 within which is ar ranged a pair of screen elements 29 preferably of a finely woven mesh wire arranged in suitable frames.
These screens are superimposed with respect to each other and are formed dish-shaped in opposing relation to provide therebetween a chamber 35 to break up the flow of water through the device. 7
In the form illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, the connector ring Ill provides screw-threads 3| for threaded connection directly to the faucet or water tap 32.
The connector ring Illa illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 is substantially the same as that illustrated in Fig. 2 with the exception that there is provided in the top wall of the tube 13a, a transversely extending groove 33 with the bottom of this groove provided with spaced apertures 34,
the latter to serve as inlets to the tube l3a in addition to the elongated openings 15a of the tube l3a.
In the form of the connector ring illustrated in Figs. 6-7, the top wall 36 of the tube 13b at its peripheral edge is provided with notches 3! which communicate with the interior of the tube I31) and are located between the elongated openings l5b of the tube l3b. The connector lfib shown in Figs. 6 and '7 is otherwise identical to that shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
When the device as illustrated in Fig. 2 is connected to the water faucet or tap 32 in the manner shown in Fig. 1, there is provided between the end of the tap 32 and the web H a rubber washer 32' for sealing purposes.
In Figs. 8 and 9, I have illustrated the device shown in Fig. 2 connected to an adaptor. This adaptor is indicated at 39. It includes a sleeve 40 into which the end of the faucet or tap 32a extends. The opening of the sleeve 46 into which this faucet 32a extends is of a diameter such as will permit faucets or taps of various diameters to be received in the opening 40. The adaptor 39 is connected to the water faucet or tap by set screws 4|. Arranged in the base of the opening is a rubber washer 42 and threaded against this washer 42 is the end portion 43 of a connector 44 threaded into the sleeve 39 as shown in Fig. 8.
This connector 44 has a threaded end portion 45 K onto which is adapted to be threaded the connector ring I0.
It will be noted that in Fig. 2 that the air intake 24 is tapered. downwardly and outwardly This arrangement effect is provided whereby air is drawn through the intakes provided by the annular groove 24 and the openings 2| into chamber 25 and becomes intimately mixed with the water stream to accomplish the several objects hereinbefore set forth.
In the form shown in Figs. 4 and 6, the course of the water before passing into the tube-is through the openings 34 and 31 respectively of the device illustrated in these two figures, the
operation and result, however, is substantially the same as that accomplished by the device shown in Fig. 2.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into efiect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A device for intimately mixing air with a flowing stream of water comprising a connector ring for connecting the device to a water faucet, said ring having an internal web and a tube closed at one end, the latter supported concentrically within the ring by said web with the closed end of the tube adjacent the inlet end of the ring and above the web, said tube below its closed end having elongated openings formed in its side walls opening communication between the tube and the ring on opposite sides of the web, an intermediate ring having one end portion threaded into said connector ring and having an exterior portion providing a flange forming, together with a tapered edge of the connectorring, a downwardly and outwardly extending annular air groove, said intermediate ring being provided with lateral openings communicating with said groove, the open end of said tube extending below the plane of said lateral openings and within said intermediate ring, a nozzle threaded upon the exterior end portion of said intermediate ring, and screen members of finely woven mesh disposed between said nozzle and said intermediate ring, said screen members being concave in opposite directions with respect to each other and in spaced relation to provide therebetween a chamber.
