UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
lFRANCIS H. RICHARDS, -OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNCR TO ELWIN R. HYDE AND CLARENCE L. HYDE, OF SAME PLACE.
CLAMP FOR TRY-SQUARE BLADES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. `253,945, dated February 21, 1882.
Application led June 23, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FEANCIs H. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springeld, Hampden county, State of Massa` chusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Try-Squares, of which the following is a specification.
VThis invention relates to that class of carpenters tool in which a graduated metallic blade is adjustable Within a stock having straight edges at xed and known angles tothe blade; and my invention consists in an improved clamp for securing blade and stock together, and for facilitating the adjustment of one relative to the other.
In the drawings, Figure I is a side elevation of a stock and Iblade having my improved clamp. Fig. II is the reverse of Fig. I. Fig. III is the same as Fig. Il, with the removable parts of the clamp detached. Fig. 1V is a section on the line x :r of Fig. I, and Fig. V is a detail view.
A stock having one or more straight edges, and provided with a recess, to be combined With a blade having a longitudinal channel in one surface, and having arranged also with it a clamping device to admit ot' an adjustment of said blad'e,is old, and I make no claim broadly to such combination 3 but without disparagement to previous patents granted for said devices I would in this specify the construction of a device by which the disadvantages common to clamps heretoforeof working loose, being easily disordered, and difficult to repair-are entirely obviated.
B is the stock, provided with a recess inv its foot to receive the blade D, having the longitudinal channel d. The recess is formed near the center of the web b, connecting the straight edges of the stock, and besides affording a Ilat bearing-surface for one side of theblade, affords also a shoulder, g, lfor one edge of the blade to bear against, as shown in Figs. III and 1V, as is common.
The clamp consisting of three parts, in combination with a socket formed in the web b, is formed of the jaw C, screw H, and lever-nut I. The jaw C has' upon its inner surface, at one end, the hook c to en gage with the channel d of the blade, upon its other end the beveled surface c', and intermediately the hole y, forming an opening for the body of the screw H and an extended seat for its head.
ing in the jaw C for head of screw H, I increase the stock by forming a boss upon the under side of the jaw, and make a corresponding depression in the web opposite the same, as shown in Fig. IV, and I form the hole in the web through which passes Vthe shank of screw H slightly elongated,as shown in Fig. III, to permit a slight movement to the jaw as the clamp is tightened.
In operation, when the blade is inserted in the stock, the lever I in convenient access to the ngers is swung to produce a powerful pressure upon the jaw to cause it to bear upon the blade with equal force horizontally and vertically to secure it, so that it cannot possibly be loosened except by the return of the le- 8o ver to its former position. Should it be required to take up any wear of the parts to keep the clamp in a perfectly operative condition, the lever is held in one hand, while the other by a screw-driver tightens the screw Hf By these means I form a simple andjpowerful clamp, and one which requires only one motion to tighten or release it.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim is-' The combination, with channeled blade D,
and with a stockprovided with a recess to re ceive the blade, and with a socket, V, having the incline c to seat the clampjaw and direct its movement by means of said incline, of jaw C, adapted to bear simultaneously upon the blade and incline, and combined with the screw H and lever I, or similar draw mechanism to cause it to follow upon the incline to clamp the blade to the stock upon two of its surfaces, substantially as shown and described.
FRANCIS H. RICHARDS.
