SCABBARD Fi1ed May 12, 1949 /m/WO INVENTOR. MM@ WWW/@J C021 Patented Jan. 16, 1951 SQABBARDv Frederick W. Moehle, Attleboro, Mass., assigner to V. H. Blackinton & C0., Inc., North Attleboro,
Mass., a corporation Application May 12, 1949, Serial No. 92,890
* 2 Claims. l
This invention relates to a scabbard.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a scabbard with improvements which pro-` vide suitable protection for the sword or other blade received therein and will receive the sword in the scabbard without undue noise.
Another object is to make the interior parts of my scabbard and their assembly so simple and inexpensive that the cost of production is relatively low.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and arrangement of parts such asis disclosed by the drawings and specification. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to 4various changes and modifications, and, therefore, I am not to be limited to said disclosure; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my scabbard.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a mouth piece for the scabbard.
Figure Bis a perspective view of an inside ferrule for the scabbarcl.
Figure 4 is a sectional View taken on the line I2 generally of outer oval contour and a ange I4 v depending therefrom which is cut away, as shown, so that it only half encircles said scabbard body l at the outside. Said ange I4 has a hole I6 therein through which a screw rI8 passes to at-Y tach said mouth piece to the said scabbard body l0.
Within said hollow scabbard body l 0 two liners 20 are preferably inserted. These are thin, flat sheets of press-board or other inexpensive material which taper some in width from top vto bottom and are preferably somewhat shorter than the scabbard body I0 they fit into. Also within said body I0 is an inside ferrule or oval sleeve 22 ordinarily made of a thin piece of metal and of generally oval shape. This inside ferrule is of a shape and size that enables it to enter the upper end of said hollow body l0 and drop down a short distance whereupon it rmly lodges in said body due to the taper of the latter. A suitable position for it is indicated in Figure l of the drawings so that it is slightly below and spaced from the top edge of said body and bclow said mouth piece. Between each side of said inside ferrule 22 and the inner side surfaces of said body l0 the two said liners 29 are placed. Theyfordinarily extend from a point at or below the top edge of said body to a point quite near the lower end thereof. 1
When a sword or other instrument blade is inserted in said scabbard it passes through said inside ferrule 22 and between said liners 2l! at opposite sides of the scabbard body thus protecting the blade and permitting its noiseless insertion and avoiding any rattling in the scabbard as it is carried about. This construction avoids inserting a special lining within the scabbard which is relatively costly and difficult.
In Figure 6 of the drawings a modified form of mouth piece is illustrated which has a downwardly extending flange l5 of the endless type for use when the outside of the soabbard is covered with leather, cloth or thelike. Y
What I claim is:
l. A scabbard comprising a hollow, downwardly tapering body, a separate ferrule adapted to frictionally engage within said body spaced below and adjacent the upper yend of said body, and separate liners inside said body between said ferrule and said body and extending above and below said ferrule.
2. A scabbard comprising a hollow, downwardly tapering body, a mouth piece at the top of said body, a ange extending downwardly from said v mouth piece outside said body and provided with an aperture therein to receive a screw for attachment of said flange to said body, a separate ferrule adapted to frictionally engage within said body spaced below and adjacent the upper end `of said body, and separate liners inside said body between said ferrule and said body and extending above and below said ferrule.
FREDERICK W. MOEI-ILE.
