This invention relates to a pump and has been applied to the construction of a water pump for outboard motors and the like in which an impeller is oscillated about a cylindrical pump chamber by an eccentric cam rotating inside the impeller.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a more efficient pump.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved seal between the impeller and the pump casing.
Another object is `to provide a ilxed seal for the pump with a flexible interconnection between the impeller and casing.
Other objects and advantages are set forth in the description of the pump illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a pump mounted on the propeller shaft of an outboard motor and embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a transverse section through the` pump showing the impeller at the bottom stroke;
Fig. 3 is similar to Fig. 2 showing the impeller nearing the top of its stroke;
Fig. 4 is a similar section through a modified construction in which the seal interconnection is additionally flexible and is not tensioned.
The pump has a cylindrical pump casing I with end walls 2 and 3, the latter end wall l constituting a removable cover plate to provide for assembly of the pump.
The rotary pump shaft I extends axially through the end walls and has an eccentric cam sleeve 5 pinned thereto to rotate therewith.
The peripheral wall of the casing, preferably at the top, has an inlet port 6 and an outlet port 'l with a recess 8 therebetween having a circular cross section at its root of larger diameter than its inwardly facing mouth.
A cylindrical rubber impeller 9 is bonded to a steel insert I which fits onto cam 5 and provides a bearing for the cam to rotate in while oscillating the impeller about the pump chamber in caslng I.
The radial thickness of the impeller 8 and its insert I0 is approximately equal to the minimum radial distance between cam and the outer wall I.
The impeller 8 has a tongue II moulded integral therewith and extending radially upward into recess 8 with a circular edge I2 fitting tightly into the circular part of the recess to permanently seal the tongue to the casing I.
of its (Cl. 10S-131) The axial length of the impeuer s and its tongue II is equal to the distance between end walls 2 and I so that vthe impeller and its tongue are substantially sealed against the end walls at all times.
The tongue II is formed of stretchable :rubber land is tensioned in serving as an interconnection between impeller l and casing I during operation of the pump.
The tongue II also flexes as the impeller oscillates from side to side in the casing.
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 4, the tongue II' is curved at an angle from a radius of the pump, and recess l is shaped to have its throat adjacent the circular root section face in a direction toward one side rather than radially inwardly of the pump.
.The tongue II' ilexes as the impeller oscillates about the casing and maintains a constant seal between the casing and impeller.
The invention may have various' embodiments within the scope of the accompanying claims.
I claim:
1. A pump of the class described comprising a cylindrical casing, a non-rotary impeller adapted to oscillate circumferentially inside the casing in contact with the outer wall thereof, a single elastic tongue interconnecting and tensioned between the impeller and outer casing wail to divide the interior of the casing between the inlet and outlet ports thereof and hold the impeller against rotation. and interlocking means between the outer edge of said tongue and the casing securing said tongue edge in fixed and sealed re. lation to the casing.
2. A pump of the class dscribed comprising a cylindrical casing, a non-rotary impeller adapted to osclllate circumferentially inside the casing in contact with the outer wall thereof, a. single elastic tongue interconnecting the impeller and outer casing wall to divide the interior of the casing between the inlet and outlet ports thereof and hold the impeller against rotation, said tongue being integral with the impeller, and a throated recess in the casing receiving a complementary enlarged edge of said tongue to effectively seal the divided interior portions of said casing, said tongue being adapted to be elongated and to contract during oscillation of the impeller to maintain the division of the interior of the casing during operation of the pump.
