Patented Dec. 26, 1950 Q UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE The present invention relates to a conveniently usable valving and dispensing device for dry soap powders, chips and other granular products of a similar nature commonly packaged for sale in cardboard boxes, cartons and the like.

The purpose of the invention is to provide a simple and economical attachment which may be readily and satisfactorily harnessed on a conventional-type soap packaging box, the same being characterized by a simple and expedient valve which may be suitably opened and closed to obtain the desired ends, controlled dispensing of the contents of the box, and protection of same when not ready for use.

More specifically, the invention has to do with a sectional frame which is clamped around the marginal edge portions of a soap box or the like and which has special means at one end of the frame to coact with a discharge opening which is punched in the adjacent wall of the box. there being a simple and practical valve mounted at said end to open and close the discharge opening at will,

Considered from another point of view the invention has to do with a satisfactory hand tripped valve which normally closes over a discharge opening punched in one wall of a cardboard carton and which may be readily moved into open and closed positions and which has frame means associated therewith whereby it may be aptly mounted on the carton for practical utility.

It is also a matter of moment and therefore an object of the invention to utilize attachment means for the valve which in effect is a shield particularly for the bottom of the cardboard carton. Through the provision of a metal covering for the carton at the bottom the latter may be set on the sink or near wet areas to keep the carton from getting soaked and bursting open.

Other objects and advantages will become more read ly apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings:

Briefly summarized, the improved attachment herein disclosed, described and claimed is characterized by an adaptor frame embodying a connecting and assembling strap adapted to be fitted against one vertical edge portion of said box, a horizontal bottom strap adapted to flt beneath and cover the bottom edge portion of said box having one end hinged to the lower end of said assembling strap, the opposite free end of said bottom strap terminating in a box engaging and retaining clip, a top strap in spaced parallelism above said bottom strap and hinged at one end to the upper end of said assembling strap, the opposite free end of said top strap being flanged and formed with a bend underlying said free end in spaced parallelism and providing a box gripping clasp, and. valve means carried by said flanged end.

Referring now to the drawings by distinguishing reference characters the commodity box or carton is denoted by the numeral 5 and contains granular soap or other dry granular materials 6. The materials are adapted to be dispensed through a V-shaped or similar opening which is punched or otherwise cut, as at I, in the wall 8 of the carton.

The attachment means comprises a plastic or sheet metal or equivalent adaptor frame which is denoted by the numeral 9. It includes a vertical assembling and connecting strap member ill having a horizontal bottom strap member H hinged thereto as at l2. The bottom strap me l-- ber II has a clip it which is resilient and which is adapted to snap up over the lower front portion of the box shown in the drawings. The remaining top strap M is also horizontal and is hinged to the upper end of the vertical strap as at l5 and is of special construction. The free end portion thereof has a downbent flange l6 which is formed into an inbent substantially triangular or lateral retaining tongue H. The tongue is parallel to the top strap l4 and is adapted to slip into the discharge opening i, where it functions as a clas and therefore releasably engages the top wall l8 of the carton. It will be noted that the downbent flange portion is also provided with a slot 59 which accommodates the relatively narrow shank portion 25 of the plate valve 2 I. The shank portion slides back and forth through the slot to open and close the valve and the valve is on the exterior of the box and when closed serves to fit over the discharge open ng I as shown in Figures 2 and 3. The shank portion is rolled at its free end into a suitable gripping knob or finger-piece 22 which slides back and forth in a second guide and assembling slot 23 in the strap l4. By slidably keying the shank in the respective slots l9 and 23, a satisfactory and simple assemblage is provided. Obviously, when the attachment is fitted on the cardboard carton, the shank 20 slides between the strap l4 and the top wall l8 of the carton and thus is frictionally retained in either open or closed positions. It may be pushed fully open as shown in Figure 2 and held or pushed in slightly and held in an intermediate position to restrict the amount of soap powder which flows through the opening '1. In practice the adaptor frame 9 is fitted on the box with the strap portions H, H! and M embracing three marginal portions of the box. The clip 13 retains one end and the flange l6 and clasp l1 serves to retain the opposite end of the frame. With the frame securely in place on the box the valve may be slid to open and closed positions with satisfactory results.

A careful consideration of the foregoing description in conjunction with the invention as illustrated in the drawings will enable the reader to obtain a clear understanding and impression of the alleged features of merit and novelty sufficient to clarify the construction of the invention as hereinafter claimed.

Minor changes in shape, size, materials and rearrangement of parts may be resorted to in actual practice so long as no departure is made from the invention as claimed.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. An attachment for a soap box or the like comprising an adaptor frame embodying a horizontal imperforate bottom strap terminating in a box contacting and retaining clip, a horizontal top strap, and an intervening vertical strap connecting corresponding ends of the top and bottom straps, said top strap having a depending flanged portion at the free end of said strap and said flanged portion being fashioned into a clasp, said clasp being bent and disposed in spaced parallelism beneath said top strap and being adapted to detachably clasp against the top of said box, said top strap being provided intermediate its ends with a slot, the flanged free end of said top strap also having a slot, a valve plate at right angles to said top strap having a laterally directed shank, said shank being slidable in the slot in said flanged free end portion and between the top strap and said clasp, said shank terminating in a finger grip and said finger grip bein located and operable in said first named slot.

An attachment for a soap containing and dispensing carton of the class described, an adaptor frame including a horizontal top strap member, said top strap member being provided in-- termediate its ends with a slot and having at one end a flange formed with a slot, said flange being further provided with an inbent tongue forming a clasp, a valve plate provided with a shank, said shank being at right angles to said plate and slidable in the slot in said flange and said shank being slidable between the clasp and top strap member, said shank terminating in a finger grip and said finger grip being slidably keyed in said first named slot, a horizontal bottom strap member of a length corresponding substantially to the length of the top strap member, said bottom strap member being imperforate and of a width to completely underlie the bottom of the carton with which it is adapted to be used and being provided at its free end with a carton gripping clip, and a vertically disposed intervening strap member hingedly connected with corresponding ends of the top and bottom strap members.

An attachment for a soap containing and dispensing carton of the class described, an adaptor frame including a top strap member, said top strap member being provided intermediate its ends with a slot and having at one end a flange formed with a slot, said flange being further provided With an inbent tongue forming a clasp, a valve plate provided with a shank, said shank being at right angles to said plate and slidable in the slot in said flange and said shank being slidable between the clasp and top strap member, said shank terminating in a finger grip and said finger grip being slidably keyed in said first named slot, a bottom strap of a length corresponding substantially to the length of the top strap, said bottom strap being imperforate and of a width to completely underlie the bottom of the carton with which it is adapted to be used and being provided at its free end with a carton gripping clip, and an intervening strap member hingedly connected with corresponding ends of the top and bottom strap members, all of said strap members being of the same width, a width which corresponds to the width of the carton on which said frame is detachably mounted.

4. An attachment for a soap box of the class shown and described comprising an adaptor frame embodying a connecting and assembling strap adapted to be fitted against one vertical edge portion of said box, a horizontal bottom strap adapted to fit beneath and cover the bottom edge portion of said box having one end hinged to the lower end of said assembling strap, the opposite free end of said bottom strap terminating in a box engaging and retaining clip, a top strap in spaced parallelism above said bottom strap and hinged at one end to the upper end of said assembling strap, the opposite free end of said top strap being flanged and formed with a bend underlying said free end in spaced parallelism and providing a box grippin clasp, and valve means carried by said flanged end.
