way, on an adjacent building or any location convenient to the driver of an automobile approaching the door I.
The sleeve valve 36 has the open ended sleeve 43 driven forward by the incoming water pressure against the tension. of the soft spring 44, which closes the outlet 45 leading into the cylinder 25 ahead of the piston 21. This outlet 45 has the adjustable needle valve control 46.
The starting spring 41 encirclesthe piston rod between "the ,stuffing box 23 and the adjustable collar 48 fixed on the piston rod by the setscrew 49. It functions to overcome the inertia of the piston 21, before the door begins its descent.
This invention operates substantially as follows: When the door I is in the vertical closed position, the cable I4 is in the extendedcondition and the piston nut 29 advanced to abutment with the end of the stufng box 23 projecting into they cylinder 25, permitting an unobstructed inow of water from the tube 31 ahead of the piston.
Closing the switch 39, opens the valve 35 admitting water pressure through thevalve 36, which causes the sleeve 43 to' close the outlet 45, and pass forward through the tube 31 and retract the piston 21 to the position shown in Fig. 2.
l This causes the piston rod to pull the cable 20 and rotate the sheave I9 contra-clockwise, which also -reels in the cable I4 causing the coupling I6 to z'pull against the pulley guide at I3 and retract -the top of the door I and swing it on its pivots at 3. ,'Ih'e door is stopped at a position slightly less than horizontal by the adjustable stop 50 yon the wall 4, so that the door will automatically .tend to. close when the water pressure is stopped 'at the Valve 35 by opening the remote control switch at 39. When the switch at 39 is opened thevalve automatically closes, and the spring 44- backs up the sleeve 43 and opens the outlet 45. In the meantime pressure leakage through the bypass 39- -3I, permits'the starting spring 41 to advance the piston 21 past the outlet 45, permitting the water displaced by the advance of the piston to flow through the outlets 45 and 3| to the drain pipe 33. By, adjusting the needle valve 46 the advance of the piston can -be selectively delayed to retard the closing-of the door I, from one to twoor three minutes, sufficient time for the driver to :dismount from the car and leave the garage through the door I. In garages having other means of exit, the closing of the door I can b'e accelerated by adjusting the needle valves at 46 and 32.
'I'he opening of the door can be made fully automatic' by including the electric eye switch 5 I, in the circuit 4Ii-4I preferably mounted within an opening through thev door substantially alined with the rays of the headlights of the motor car. It will function to close the circuit and open the doorV when activated by the headlights.
For doors of unusual height, the sheave I9 is easily changeable to increase or reduce the gear "ratio between the sheaves 1-I9. The board' and its'mechanical assembly, may be mounted on either side of the door orl the ceiling, whichever i's the more practical. y
'.Wherever electrical control is not available, a vconventional stop valve may be substituted for the'magnetic valve 35, and located at the post 42 or at any desired ydistance for remote manual control -of the door opening mechanism.
The door may be maintained open by the latch 52 engaging a pin projecting from'the wall 4.
- piston moves forward.
