/ In Great Britain February 8, 1945 Section 1, Public Law 690, August a, 1946 Patent expires February 8, 1965 2 Claims. (01. 129-1s) This invention relates to books, catalogues, files, card indices, and the like, and more particularly to what are known as loose leaf binders or any other collection, group, or pluraity of documents, papers, cards, tablets or the like, hereinafter referred to as sheets, held together along one edge so that the contents may be accessible and where it is required that one or more of the sheets may be readily detached or inserted.
For example, manufacturers and marketing organisations selling a variety of goods the nature or price of which is constantly changing, find it expedient to publish such a book or catalogue describing their commodities and this invention is particularly efficacious when applied to books or catalogues for such a purpose. The construction of devices to perform the above described function has in the past involved the use of relatively expensive covers with metal fittings and other elaborated variations of the bookbinders craft, and the object of this invention is to provide a simple device for the retention of sheets and to facilitate their insertion or withdrawal and to occupy the minimum space beyond the bulk of the sheets.
The following is a description of one embodiment of the invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is an exploded perspective view of the various parts of the binder;
Figure 2 shows the parts of Figure l assembled to provide the spine and sliding member shown separated from one another;
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the sliding member assembled with the spine and in a position to receive a stack of sheets;
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the stack of sheets assembled in the binder, as shown in the previous figures.
Referring to the construction shown in the drawings, the spine of the binder may be built upfrom an inner channel-shaped member having its side walls cut away at each end, as indicated at H and i2. The cut-away portion ll is arranged to be filled by a channelled filling piece IS, the bottom wall of which, when in position in the channel member ID, provides a web it extending between the side walls of the other member H3. The inner channel member 10 is embraced by an outer channel member 9 which extends from the cut-away portion l2 to the other end of the member lit, and serves to hold the filling piece it in position. A sliding member is provided in the form of an outer sliding channel iii, in which. is nested an inner channel filling member l6 which is so secured in position. that the, bottom wall. thereof i1 is spaced away from the bottom wall of the outer channel and forms a web. This composite sliding member is arranged slidably to engage the reduced. extension of the channel member is provided by the cut-away portion [2 so that the extension lies between the web I! and the bottom wall 18 of the sliding member. As will be seen from Figure 3, this binder is arranged to hold in position a stack of sheets having a tongue l9 along one side thereof which is under-cut at 2% to provide overlying portions 2|. When it is required to insert the sheets the slide is moved into the position shown in Figure 3 so that the distance between the edges of the web portions it and I7 is such as to enable the tongue [9 to be inserted between them. The slide is then moved into the position shown in Figure 4, in which the webs l4 and I! move into the under-cut portion 26. The sliding member 15 is prevented from detachment from the part 9 by means of a tethering tape 22. All the above parts may be formed from cardboard, vulcanised fibre, or plastic sheet.
We claim:
1. A binder adapted to retain a plurality of sheets having along one side thereof at least one tongue undercut to provide overhanging portions on each side thereof, which binder comprises an inner channel-shaped member having its side flanges partially cut away at each end, a channelled filling piece arranged in the cutaway portion at one end of said inner channelshaped member, the back of said channelled filling piece forming a web extending between the cutaway flanges of said inner channelshaped member at said end and spaced from the back wall thereof, an outer channel-shaped member embracing said inner channel-shaped member and said channelled filling piece and extending short of the cutaway portion at the other end of said inner channel-shaped member, said outer channel-shaped member serving to hold said channelled filler piece in the cutaway portion of said inner channel-shaped member, and a sliding channel-shaped member comprising inner and outer channels, said inner channel being so secured to said outer channel that the back wall of said inner channel is spaced away from the back wall of said outer channel and forms a web extending between the flanges of said outer channel whereby said sliding channel-shaped member is adapted to slidably engage the cutaway portion of said inner channelshaped member at said other end.
2. A binder adapted to retain a plurality of sheets having along one side thereof at least one tongue undercut to provide overhanging portions on each side thereof, which binder comprises an inner channel-shaped member having its side flanges partially cut awa at each end, a channelled filling piece arranged in the cutawa portion at one end of said inner channelshaped member, the back of said channelled filling piece forming a web extending between the cutaway flanges of said inner channelshaped member at said end and spaced from the back wall thereof, an outer channel-shaped member embracing said inner channel-shaped member and said channelled filling piece and extending short of the cutaway portion at the other end of said inner channel-shaped member, said outer channel-shaped member serving to hold said channelled filler piece in the cutaway portion of said inner channel-shaped member, a sliding channel-shaped member comprising inner and outer channels, said inner channel being so secured to said outer channel that the back wall of said inner channel is spaced away from the back wall of said outer channel and forms a web extending between the flanges of said outer channel whereby said sliding channelshaped member is adapted to slidably engage the cutaway portion of said inner channelshaped member at said other end, and a flexible tether secured between the outer channelshaped member and the sliding channel shaped member to limit longitudinal movement therebetween.
