4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety razors and more particularly to means for reciprocating the blade during the shaving action.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a reciprocably mounted blade holder together with a roller which forms a guard for the cutting edge of the blade, together with novel drive means between the roller and the blade holder for reciprocating the blade holder by a rotation of the roller during the shaving action.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bladeholder which is easily and quickly mounted in position and removed from the head of the razor.
A still further object is to provide a blade holder by means of which the blade may be easily and quickly removed and replaced without necessitating removal of the blade holder from the head of the razor.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation,
neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refor to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the head of the razor with the blade holder and blade mounted in position thereon;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the blade holder in open position and with the blade removed;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line 3--3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the head of the razor;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional View of one of the anti-friction rollers for the blade holder taken on a line 5-5 of Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary rear elevational View showing the spring for closing the upper clamping plate of the blade holder.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein, for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a substantially rectangular-shaped head of the razor having an internally threaded socket 6 at its bottom in 2 which the upper end of a handle I is threadedly connected.
A pair of arms 8 project forwardly from the front side edges of the head 5 and in which openings 9 are provided for rotatably supporting the reduced end portions In of a roller ll having a milled surface which projects slightly forwardly of the front ends of the arms 8. Gears I2 are suitably secured or integrally formed at the ends of the roller inwardly of the arms 8 and preferably of a diameter slightly less than that of the central portion of the roller.
A longitudinally extending guide rib I3 is formed at the central portion of the head 5 to project upwardly from the surface thereof and is slidably received in a longitudinally extending groove H3 in the under sid of a blade holder designated generally at l5 and which is slidably mounted on the head 5.
Rollers l6 are recessed in grooves I! in the upper surface of the head 5 and are iournaled on shafts [8 which have their ends secured in the ends of the grooves. The edges of the rollers l6 project upwardly slightly above the surface of the head 5 to facilitate sliding movement of the blade holder l5 thereon.
The blade holder l5 comprises a lower blade supporting plate l9 and an upper blade clamping plate 20 pivoted at its rear edge for vertical swinging movement on a rod 2| having its ends supported in upstandin ears 22 rising from the rear edge of the lower plate l9. The confronting faces of the plates l9 and 20 are curved from front to rear to hold the front edge of a blade 23 in a slightly downwardly curved position when clamped between the plates.
The rear edge of the upper clamping plate 20 is formed with a notch 24 in which is positioned a coil spring 25 mounted on the rod 2| with one end of the spring bearing against the rear edge of the upper plate 20, as shown at 26, and the other end of the spring extending downwardly and bearing against the rear edge of the lower plate l9, as shown at 21, whereby to exert its influence on the upper clamping plate to hold the latter in a downwardly closed position to clamp the blade in the holder. The rear edge of the upper clamping plate 20 is formed with a rearwardly extending finger gripping lip 28 to facilitate raising thereof.
The upper surface of the lower clamping plate I9 is formed with a longitudinally extending rib 29 to enter the central longitudinal slot 30 of the blade 23 and the bottom surface of the upper 3 clamping plate 20 is formed with a groove 3| to receive the rib 29.
The opposed faces of the plates 19 and 28 are formed with opposed longitudinally extending grooves 32 and 33, respectively, in which therear edge of the blade 23 is positioned to prevent danger of dulling the blade when placing the same in position in the holder.
The front edge of the lower plate E9 of the blade holder is held against a shoulder 34 at the rear edge of each of the arms 8 and the front and rear edges of the head are provided with upstanding resilient snaps or fingers 35 and 36, respectively, engaged, respectively, in grooves 31 and 38 at the front and rear edges of the lower clamping plate [9, the snaps 35 holding the blade holder downwardly on the head 5 while at the same time permitting free longitudinal sliding movement thereof.
The front edge of the lower clamping plate I9 is formed with a forwardly projecting longitudinally extending shaft housing 39 in which a Horsfal or double helix screw 49 is journaled, the housing having pins 4| extending downwardly therein for riding in the grooves of the screw. Gears 42 are suitably secured to the ends of the screw 40 in engagement with the gears 12 carried by the roller I I.
In the operation of the device, the blade holder comprising the upper and lower clamping plates 19 and 20 is placed in position on the head 5 with the rib 13 of the head seated in the groove [4 in the bottom of the blade holder and is held in position by the snaps 35 and 36 for sliding movement of the blade holder on the head.
A blade 23 of conventional construction is clamped in position between the plates I9 and 29 by raising the upper clamping plate 28, the blade thus being carried by the blade holder during reciprocating movement of the latter.
Reciprocating movement is imparted to the blade holder by a rotation of the roller I l during the shaving action which causes a rotation of the double helix screw 48 through the gears I2 and 42 and the pins 4! carried by the housing 39 at the front edge'of the blade holder travelling in the grooves of the screw transmit the rotary motion of the screw into a reciprocating motion of the blade holder. The cutting action of the blade is thus substantially increased and the efiiciency of the razor improved by the reciprocation of the blade during the shaving action. 7 In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certainchanges fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A safety razor comprising a flat head, a blade holder mounted for sliding movement on th head and including upper and lower blade clamping plates, means pivotally connecting the rear edges Of the plates to each other, catches holding the lower plate in slidably mounted position on the head, and reciprocating means for the blade holder carried by the head, said reciprocating means comprising a roller journaled at the front edge of the head, and a double helix-screw having a reversing reciprocating driving engagement with the blade holder and having driving engagement with the roller.
2. A safety razor comprising a flat head, a blade holder slidably mounted on the head and including upper and lower blade clamping plates means pivotally connecting the rear edges of the plate to each other, catches holding the lower plate in slidably mounted position on the head, a double helix screw journaled in the blade holder and connected therewith for transmitting the rotary motion of the screw to a reciprocating motion of the blade holder, a traction drive roller journaled in the head, and gears connecting the roller to the screw.
3. A safety razor comprising a fiat head, a blade holder slidably mounted on the head and including upper and lower blade clamping plates, means pivotally connecting the rear edges of said plates to each other, anti-friction means between the head and the lower clamping plate, interfitting guide means between the head and the lower clamping plate, resilient snap means at the front and rear edges of the head holding the lower clamping plate thereon, a traction roller journaled on the front edge of the head, and a reciprocating drive connection between the roller and the lower clamping plate.
4. A safety razor comprising a flat head, a blade holder slidably mounted on the head, and including upper and lower blade clamping plates, means pivotally connecting the rear edges of said plates to each other, anti-friction means between the head and the lower clamping plate, interfitting guide means between the head and the lower clamping plate, resilient snap means at the front and rear edges of the head holding the lower clamping plate thereon, a traction roller journaled on the front edge of the head, and a reciproeating drive connection between the roller and the lower clamping plate and comprising a shaft housing on the front edge of the lower clamping plate, a double helix screw journaled therein and connected to the blade holder for reciprocating the latter, and gears connecting the screw to the roller.
