This invention relates to razors of the type commonly known as safety razors with magnetic guard.
The broad object of the invention is to improve the shaving qualities of razors of this type.
More specific objects of the invention are to reduce the necessary degree of care while shaving in order to avoid cutting or knicking the skin; to materially reduce shaving discomfort due to razor pull; to eliminate irritation of the skin usually caused by close shaving; to enable a user to obtain a satisfactory shave with a used blade even after it has become too dull for satisfactory use in a conventional razor; and to increase the number of shaves usually obtainable from a single blade.
Other objects and advantages may become apparent during the course of the following description.

Figure 3 is an elevation on a slightly reduced scale of the lower portion of the structure shown in Figure 2 as viewed from the right thereof.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing a different type guard for the blade cutting edge.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral I indicates a wafer type blade of usual construction havin longitudinal cutting edges 2. By means of a handle 3 threaded on the usual stud formed on a cap 4 and extending through a guard 5 in the usual manner, the blade may be clamped between the cap and guard. The guard is of a well known type including one or more marginal slots 6 extending throughout a major portion of the length thereof so as to lie adjacent each cutting edge 2 when the blade, cap and guard are in assembled relation. The slots form the usual rails l which extend in parallel relation to the cutting edges but spaced therefrom both outwardly and forwardly with respect thereto.
Extending lengthwise of the forward face of the guard 5 adjacent the longitudinal edges thereof are magnetized bars 8 which may be of any magnetic material suitable for the purpose, the razor per se being of non-magnetic material. Preferably one bar is employed along each edge of the guard, and the bars are arranged so that the slots 6 will be disposed between and in alinement with the bars and the cutting edges 2. The cross sectional dimension 2 of each bar is materially less than one half of the width of the blade I so as to localize the magnetic pull on the cutting edges. Preferably the bars are circular in cross section as shown.
Preferably the bars 8 are formed separately from the guard and permanently secured thereto by some suitable means such as brazing. Preferably the bars are magnetized after assembly with respect to the guard although they may be magnetized before such assembly if desired, either in a lengthwise or a crosswise direction. In any event the bars and guard may be plated or otherwise finished in the same manner so as to present a pleasin and harmonious appearance.
The structure shown in Figure 4 is the same as above described except the guard i5 is of the comb type having a series of teeth l6 alon each longitudinal edge which provide spaces ll alternating with the teeth. The forward face of the guard i5 is provided with magnetized bars 8 extending along the teeth It. The spaces l1 provide a series of unobstructed spaces between, and in alinement with, the bars and the cutting edges along a substantial portion of the length of the latter.
In the use of a razor embodying my invention, the bars 8 exert a localized magnetic pull along the cutting edges from a slight distance therefrom, such distance being unobstructed throughout the length of the slots 6 in the form of guard having the slots, and throughout the width of the spaces H in the form of guard having the teeth It. It is believed that the feathered portions of the blades along the cutting edges are distorted in a minute degree in a direction away from the face and that any wire edges present are pulled away from the face whereby they are prevented from cutting or tearing the skin. In any event it is known through experimental use of razors embodying this invention that it is practically impossible to shave with sufllcient carelessness to cut or knick oneself while using such a razor and that any scraping sensation is practically eliminated even after a blade has been used repeatedly,
I claim:
1. In a razor of the type comprising a cap and a guard having a blade clamped therebetween so as to expose a cutting edge of the blade, a magnetized bar carried by the face of the guard remote from the blade and extending lengthwise along and directly opposite the cutting edge in spaced relation thereto, said bar having a cross sectional dimension materially less than one half the Width of the blade so as to localize the magassasra netic pull of the bar along said edge, the marginal portion of the guard adjacent each barhaving cut away portions providing substantial unobstructed space extending lengthwise of and located between and in alinement with the bar and cutting edge.
2. In a razor oi the type comprising a cap and a guard having a blade clamped therebetween so as to expose a cutting. edge of the blade, a magnetized bar ca'rried by the lace of'the guard remote from the blade and extending lengthwise along and directly opposite said cutting edge in spaced relation thereto, said bar having a cross sectional dimension materially less than one'half the width of the blade so as to localize the magnetic pull of the bar along said edge, the marginal portion 01' the guard adjacent each bar having at least one slot of material length disposed be-- tween and in alinement with the bar and cutting edge and extending lengthwise thereof.
3. In a razor of the type comprising a cap and a guard having a blade clamped therebetween so as to expose a cutting edge of the blade, a magnetized bar carried by the face of the guard remote from the blade and extending lengthwise REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
