The present invention relatesto mortar applicat'ors: and it consists in the combinations. constructions and" arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
It is anobject-of the present invention to provide a mechanism for the application of mortar which is simple in construction and eflicient in its operation.
Another object of the invention'is the provision of an applicatorfor mortar which will permit an unskilled person to apply" mortar to bricks; masonry and the like in a proper manner and with much greater speed than skilled workers using conventional tools.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character above referred to which may be utilizedin conjunction with a conventional mortar board.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a mechanism for applying'mortar which may be easily manipulated by an operator.
A further object of the invention is the provision, inra mechanism for applying mortar, of a novelv valve therefor.
A still further object of the invention is the provision, in a mechanism for applying mortar, of. a novel gauge or guide member therefor.
Other and further objectsofl the invention will become apparent from a reading. of the following specification, taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:

Generally, there is provided a mortar applicator consisting of an open topped container having a lip along one edge whereby the same may be filled in the manner of a scoop, that is to say, by moving the same into a mass of mortar upon a mortar board with the lip in contact with the board. The container tapers toward the bottom end which is provided with a normally open 2 valve; adapted: to be. closed by levers adjacent-a pair of carrying: handles mounted at eitherend ed the container. A guide bar is pivotally mounted: uponxthercontainer and is adapted to be utilized upon either side of a wall: relative to the position of. thexoperatonwithout the necessity of reversing the mechanism. in the operators hand;
Referringmore particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a container having apair of downwardly converging sides i8 and H having an integrally formed vertically extending base member 12 for the side m and a. parallel base member l3 suspended adjacent the side H from end members M by means of brackets l5 in spaced relation to the side H1 The side ll) is provided withanupwardly extending lip l6- and handle grips H are carried by brackets l8 mounted on each of the-end members A valve plate #9 is carried at the lower ends of arms 20 whi'ch' are pivotally connected at their upper ends to the upper ends of the side members l4 adjacent the side H, as indicated at 2|. The valve plate l9 extends horizontally and is adapted to reciprocate through the opening 22 between the side H and base member l3.
A rod 2 3'- is pivotally connected, as indicated at' 2d, to each of the arms 29 and is adapted to slidably engage in a bracket 25. The rod is-providecl with a stop member 25 upon one side of the bracket 25 and a stop member 21 at the other side thereof. A compression spring 28 surrounds the rod 23 and is adapted to normally urge the stop members 21' away from the bracket 25.
A guide member 29 is suspended below the base members l2 by a pair of arms 36 pivotally and centrally connected at their upper extremities adjacent the upper edge of the end members I4, as indicated at 3| and a pair of outwardly extending abutments 32 is provided at either side of the device for limiting the pivotal movement of the arms 30. The end members l4 do not extend downwardly to enclose the base members l2 and I3 and thus they are provided with open ends.
The arms 30 have each affixed thereto an inwardly extending horizontally disposed arm 33 having its free end bent to form a finger piece 34.
In operation, it will be apparent that in order to load the device, the operator thereof will first grip the handles one in each hand, and then place the device on side Ill with the lip I6 in contact with the top of a mortar board 35 and thereupon close the valve H! by applying pressure to the finger grips 34 with his fingers. The device may now be operated as a scoop to fill the same with mortar, as illustrated in Figure 1.
It, is then returned to an upright position as shown, for example, in Figure 2. With the valve still closed, the base members I2 and I3 are placed upon one edge of the top of a wall section 36 to which it is desired to apply mortar with the guide member 29 bearing against the side of the wall section. The finger grips 34 are now released and the springs 28 will cause the valve [9 to open and the mortar to fall by gravity to the top of the wall within the confines of the base members l2 and 13. The device is then moved along the wall, the guide members 29 keeping the base members at the edge thereof and mortar will continue to be applied to the wall, the open ends of the base members allowing the same to pass therethrough in uniform thickness and width. To treat the opposite upper edge of the wall in the same manner, it is only necessary to move the device directly away from the operator and press the guide member against the opposite side of the Wall, whereupon the process may be repeated.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described com- 1 prising an open topped container having a downwardly tapered body adapted to contain mortar, a valve at the lower end of the body to control the flow of mortar therethrough, a pair of base members for limiting the width of a mass of mor-.-
tar passing through the valve and means adapted to selectively maintain the front and rear edges of the base members in parallel relation to the top of a wall, said means comprising a bar extending horizontally below the base members, arms attached at their lower ends to the bar and pivotally connected at their upper ends to the container and outwardly extending detents carried by the container for limiting the movement of said arms.
2. A device of the character described comprising an open topped container having a downwardly tapered body adapted to contain mortar, a lip formed. integrally with one of the upper edges of a container whereby the container may be used as a scoop to fill the same, a valve at the lower end of the body to control the flow of mortar therethrough, a pair of base members for limiting the width of a mass of mortar passing through the valve and means adapted to selectively maintain the front and rear edges of the base members in parallel relation to the top of a wan, said means comprising a bar extending horizontally below the base members, arms attached at their lower ends to the bar and pivotally connected at their upper ends to the container and outwardly extending detents carried by the container for limiting the movement of said arms.
3. A mortar applicator comprising an open topped container having a narrow mortar dispensing slot in the lower part thereof, a valve operative transversely through the lower portion of the container to cut off mortar from said slot;
