4 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in scrapers such as are adapted to be maneuvered by a walking attendant and thus manually powered, whereby to: provide a structure which may be used as. a plow for removing snow from sidewalks; garage driveways, gravel and stone paths and similar surfaces.
The invention relates to a field of endeavor which is appreciably active. 'I'herefore,Iam aware that it. is old in the art to utilize a mobile frame, to support a scraping blade. thereon, and to provide handle bars' for pushing the support whereever necessary and maneuvering the scraper blade according to the lay of the land and obstructions to be met during the snow removal procedure.
In carrying out the principles of the instant invention I utilize a structure which is possessed, Iv believe, of special adaptations and" refinements which, collectivelyfunctioning, serve to attainv the desired ends. with greater satisfaction and efliciencyr Since, in many sections of the country, snow removal jobs are. occasional affairs, the average man. of the house requires,v it is submitted, that which may be handled with convenience and without too much, physical exertion and. effort. Therefore, it is an object of the. present inventi'on, toprovide a handle equipped readily maneuverable and wheel supported truck, this having. a scraper blade on its forward portion and means being provided whereby the blade may be conveniently angled in relation to. the line. of draft of the truck, to facilitate. snow gathering and pushing results.
More particularly, novelty is predicated upon an adj'ustabl'y mounted scraper blade which is provided with a segmental rack to accommodate a latch lever carried by the truck, the lever being so designed, mounted and arranged that it may be readily utilized to insure best results with a minimum of inconvenience to the user.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the views Figure: 1 is a perspective view of a snowremoving plow constructed in accordance with theprinciples of this invention;
Figure an a longitudinal section taken centrally through the structure seen in Figure 1, the section being on the line 22 of Figure 3.;
Figure 3 is a top plan view; and,
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary detail section on the line 44' of Figure 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawings by distinguishing reference numerals the truck comprises a wooden or equivalent frame denoted by the numeral 5 and embodying longitudinal side members B- and 1 and transverse forward and rear connecting members 8 and 9. Auxiliary longitudinal frame members are mounted within the confines of the main frame and denoted by the numerals l0 and these assist in supporting an axle H and ground contacting and transporting Wheels i2 mounted on said axle between the respective longitudinal frame parts 6, T and I0 respectively. Incidentally, the numerals l3 designate handle bars hingedly connected to the axle and situated in close parallelism between the longitudinal frame members I0, said handle mem bers being provided with hand grips I4. On the forward end portion of the truck frame I provide a suitable V-shaped adapter which comprises converging members l5 and spaced parallel members It. The vertex portion of the adapter is provided with hinge means ll' connected with the central portion of the scraper blade l8. Incidentally, the blade has upper and lower longitudinal flanges l9 which serve to provide effective collecting and scraping results. The rear side of the blade, adjacent the lower half portion is provided with a segmental strap 20 having a plurality of circumferentially spaced keeper notches 2!. The notched strap functions as an adjusting rack and its intermediate portion opcrates shiftably through clearance notches 22 provided in the adapter 'members l5. At this stage I call attention to a J-shaped latch-lever 23 whose end portion is pivoted as at 24 between the members IS. The handle portion 25, provided with a hand grip 26, is workable in a slot or notch 28 provided in the transverse frame member 8 as shown in Figure 2. A coiled spring 29 is attached to the shank of the lever and also to the cross-piece 8 and this serves to hold the V retentive portion of the lever in the keeper notches 2!, in an obvious manner. By locating the handle and hand grip in the frame 5 and at the elevation seen, and close to the handle bars, it is conveniently situated for accessible and handy usage.
1 next earl attention to a caster yoke (it! (see Figure 2) having a caster wheel 3! and swivellymounted on an assembling and regulating rod 32 This rod is slidable and turnabl'e in an aperture provided therefor in the spider 33. The upper screw threaded end of the rod serves to accommodate an adjusting nut 34 (see Figure 4) which nut is provided with a groove 35 to accommodate a set screw 36, whereby to swivelly anchor the nut between the adapter members 16. The nut is provided with a finger grip 31 for convenience of operation. It is obvious, therefore, that by turning the nut, the rod 32 is raised and lowered to elevate or lower the caster and to thus correspondingly lift and lower the scraper blade to clear high and low spots occurring in pavements and the surface to be traversed, in an obvious manner.
Briefly, the invention is characterized by a wheel supported handle bar equipped frame forming a truck, this having a V-shaped fore portion constituting an adapter on the apex of which the scraper blade is hingedly mounted for swinging in a horizontal plane. Convenient adjusting means is provided for angling the scraper blade so that it has some four or five positions in respect to the longitudinal line of draft of the truck. A careful consideration of the foregoing description in conjunction with the invention as illustrated in the drawings will enable the reader to obtain a clear understanding and impression of the alleged features of merit and novelty sufficient to clarify the construction of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Minor changes in shape, size, materials and rearrangement of parts may be resorted to in actual practice so long as no departure is made from the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
