ATTACHMENT T0 STEAM BOILERS. v No. 252,958. Patented Janfil, 1882.
WITNESSES K ZJVVEJV'TOR I flttorney Unrrnn rates PATRICK F. MCDONNELL, OF OLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA.
ATTACHMENT TO STEAM-BOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,958, dated January 31, 1882.
Application filed September 30, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK I MCDON- NELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olarksburg, in the county of Harrison and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments to Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of certain improvementsinattachmentsto steam-boilers,the chief object being to prevent the escape of steam in case of accident, as the knocking off of the steam-whistle or a stop-cock, the lever that works the throttle-valve, or other similar accident, all of which will be fully understood by the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a section showing my device for preventing the escape of steam in connection with a steamwhistle. Fig. 2 is a view of the same, showing my valve closed.
In the application of my improvements to steam-boilers different devices may be em ployed, according to circumstances.
The chief idea of my invention is best represented in Fig. 1, in which A represents a part or a boiler, and B represents the cap of a steam-whistle. 0n theinside of the boiler, op-
.posite the steam-whistle, is a casting, (J, haw
ing a valve, D, attached thereto, said valve being provided with a coiled spring, E, and a standard-spring, F, both acting together to close the valvein case of accident to the steamwhistle. By means of a rod, Gr, the Whistlecap B, when screwed ho'ne, pushes open the valve D, and holds the same permanently in that position.
My improvements may be applied to all the different cocks or valves of a steam-engine, or in any simiiar way in connection with steam apparatus.
-- Having described my invention, I claim- As an improvement in steam-boilers, the valve D, provided with one or more springs for closing the same, and being held peimanently open by means of rod G, which is liable to be released in case of accident, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK F. MODONNELL.
