Description

1950 T. A. BRE'SHEARS ETAL 2,525,519
PROTECTIVE GUARD FOR RECE-PTACLES Filed July 12, 1949 TflB fi INVENTORS ATTOR N EY Patented Oct. 10, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PROTECTIVE GUARD FOR RECEPTACLES Thomas A. Breshears and John A. Franco, Emmett, Idaho Application July 12, 1949, Serial No. 104,328
provision of a guard of this character, wherein a garbage, trash or the'like receptacle will be protected against being molested by animals, in that the canine will be frustrated against pawing such receptacle for gaining access to the contents of the same, either through upsetting thereof or removing the lid or cover thereto for scavenging contents of the receptacle.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a guard of this character, wherein its construction enables the fitting of the same to the lid or cover of the receptacle with ease and dispatch and when the guard is in place it will retard a canine jumping upon the said receptacle or pulling the latter over and thereby eliminating any chance of the canine gaining access to the content of such receptacle.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a guard of this character, wherein it will be removably fastened in place and appropriately fits the lid or cover of a receptacle particularly designed for the storing of garbage, trash or the like, so as to prevent the uncovering of the receptacle by animals seeking access to its content, the
guard being of novel construction to allow of the customary service of the said receptacle under normal conditions.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a guard of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable, neat in appearance, unique in its make-up, readily and easily applied and removed at will, possessed of few parts and inexpensive tomanufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, yet changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to without sacrificing any of the invention as fall properly within the scope of the appended claims,
- In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the guard constructed in accordance with the invention as applied to a receptacle, only one attaching means for the guard being shown for the sake of clearness.
2 Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view take on the line 2--2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrow, both attaching means for the guard being shown. a
Figure 3 is an enlarged fra mentary side elevation showing in detail one attaching means in fastening position with respect to the receptacle and guard.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a portion of the body of a receptacle, such as a can, bucket, pail or the like, customarily used for the storage of garbage, trash, waste or the like, and i this instance is shown of cylindrical shape, yet it may be otherwise shaped, and open at its top, as usual, for access thereto in the placement of matter therein in any selectable manner. Removably telescoped over the open top of the receptacle A is a lid or cover B, which is appropriate for this type of such receptacle, and such lid or cover has centrally thereof a lift bail or hand-grip C, for the convenient handling thereof in the use of the said receptacle.
At diametrically opposite outer sides of the receptacle A, near the open top thereof, are arranged hand-holds D, which in this instance, are
shown of the hinged loop type, and in this manner the receptacle A can be manually handled as may be required in the use thereof.
Adapted to be imposed upon the lid or cover B, when in closing applied position over the open top of the receptacle A, is a guard, generally denoted at E, as constituting the present invention, as will be hereinafter fully described in detail.
The guard E comprises a substantially flat disklike or circular plate l0, preferably made from metal, yet it may be made from any other suitable material, having a center opening I l, which affords a clearance for the lift-bail or hand-hold C for the lid or cover B, when the plate I0 is placed in superimposed position thereon, as is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing.
The diameter of the :plate l0 may equal or be slightly greater than the diameter of the lid or cover B, While such plate may be made of different sizes in conformity with the sizes of the receptacles with which it is intended for use. At diametrically opposed points of the plate ID are upturned ears I2,- these being located at the periphery of such plate, and over such ears l2 are hooked the loop ends l3 of endless rubber bands or the like [4, after such are trained about the hand-holds D, and in this manner the guard E is held detachably fastened in place upon the lid or cover B, as is clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing.
Cut and struck outwardly vertically from the plate [0 are spaced concentrically arranged rows of upstanding spaced spurs or pointed teeth l5, these being closely arranged in theirspaced re lation to each other in the respective rows, and are for the purpose of inflicting injury to the feet of an animal when pawing at the receptacle for the upsetting thereof or when such animal attempts to jump onto the said receptacle for gaining access thereto and scavenging its content. 7
The elastic or rubber bands or the like l4 maintain the guard E and the lid:0r coverB inzplace and tightly applied to the receptacle A during the continued use of the latter, while such 'guard'E will frustrate the canine against pawing such receptacle or molesting thesame.
What is claimedis: 1. A guard'attachment for a receptacle having a top closing lid, comprising-a plate-like memaber matching the lid and superimposed thereon,
and a plurality of upstanding pointed teeth rising above the member and concentric to its center area.
2. A guard attachment for a receptacle having a top closing lid, comprising a plate-like member matching the lidand removably superimposed thereon, a plurality of spaced upstanding pointed teeth rising from the member in concentric relation to its center, and means for detachably holding the member in its superimposed position to the lid.
3. A guard attachment for a receptacle having a top closing lid, comprising a plate-like member matching the lid and removably superimvposed thereon, a plurality of spaced upstanding N 0 references cited.
