' z A'i'TORNEY Patented Oct. 3, 1950 UNITED ERASER MOUNTING Samuel J. Ross, New York, N. Y., assignor to Norma Pencil Corp., New York, N. Y.
Application July 14, 1949, Serial No. 104,729
2 Claims. 1
My invention relates to eraser mountings used in lead pencil magazines and must be compact due to the overall space limitations.
It is possible to employ rubber erasers of a diameter larger than an ordinary eraser of mechanical pencils, but the length of the eraser must be limited. In consequence, difiiculties are encountered in properly mounting such erasers in lead pencil magazines, as the eraser must be easily accessible and removable, for it serves as a closure for the container of lead in reserve. It must not be removable accidently when the cup is removed to use the eraser or to get access to a reserve of lead. Further, the holder for the rubber forming the eraser must retain its grip on the rubber while the unit forming a stop for the container holding the reserve of lead is removed.
To obviate the above defects, I have provided an eraser mounting having a yielding thimble for gripping the rubber more firmly when it closes the reserve compartment for the lead or when it is in a position to be used as an eraser than when the thimble is removed to give access to the lead container.
an accidental removal of the thimble with the rubber -when the cup normally covering the eraser unit is removed.
In the appended drawing forming part of this application 1 Figure 1 is a vertical section through a container for a lead reserve provided with an eraser mounting at its open end;
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevation of the container end showing a bayonet slot;
Figure 3 is an end elevation of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a plan view of the thimble, and
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 Figure 4.
Referring to the drawing:
I0 is the container for the lead reserve having a reduced'portion II, which has a bayonet slot I2, the lateral portion l3 of which has an oblique angle with the other portion of the slot running parallel to the axis of the container. As shown in the drawing, the lateral portion 13 of the bayonet slot rises towards the open end of the container thus forming an acute angle with the portion l2 of the bayonet slot. The reduced portion H has three elongated protuberances l4 disposed equi-angularly on its outer periphery to engage a cap not shown.
A thimble I5 presents an elongated base It from the opposite ends of which spaced yielding walls I! rise and flare, said walls forming an integral part of the base and having a cylindrical curva- I also provide a bayonet joint between the lead container and thimble to prevent ture extending from the bottom. The natural tendency of the spaced walls is to flare outwardly that is made to fit the thimble. In addition, one
of the walls H (see Figure 5) has a projection l9 depressed outwardly to fit the bayonet slot I2 and be locked therein when the thimble is moved to force projection lfl'into the lateral portion of the slot.
The engagement of the thimble carrying the rubber therein with the cylindrical portion II causes the contour of the thimble to change from that of a frusto-cone to that of a cylinder. The change of contour in the thimble walls I! increases the grip of the thimble on the rubber 20 and also provides a better engagement between the thimble 5 and the reduced end I I.
By moving the projection l9 from the straight slot into the lateral portion [3, the thimble in moving angularly moves longitudinally simultaneously. This particular arrangement of the thimble with the tubular container by means of the bayonet slot prevents the accidental disengagement of the thimble from the tubular mem her when the cap, not shown, is removed from its engagement with the protuberances I4;
I claim: 1. An eraser mounting for lead pencil magazines comprising a "tubular member presenting an open end and'a thimble forming a closure for said open end, said thimble having a pair of spaced yielding walls cylindrically curved, rising from the opposite ends of an elongated base, said Walls flaring outwardly, said tubular member having a bayonet slot at the open end and said thimble having a projection in one of its walls to engage said bayonet slot, the lateral portion of said slot forming an oblique angle with that of the other portion so that when the projection of the thimble is made to engage the said lateral portionof the slot, the thimble is bound to move longitudinally as it is moved angularly in .the opening of the tubular member. 1
. 2. An eraser mounting for lead pencilmaga zines comprising a tubular member presenting an open end and a thimble forming a closure for said open end, said thimble having a pair of spaced yielding walls, curved cylindrically and rising from a base and flaring outwardly, said tubular member having a bayonet slot and said thimble having a projection in one of its walls to engage said bayonet slot, the lateral portion of said slot rising towards the opening in the tubular memher and forming an acute angle with the other branch of the bayonet slot, so that the thimble is moved axially while turning when the thimble projection engages the lateral portion of the bayonet slot.
