In the accompanying drawings I have illus-- trated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention according to the best mode Ihave thus far devised but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made in the exemplified structure Within the scope of the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a skeleton View in perspective of the ventilator frame without the covering.
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the cover for the frame.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the cover roller.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the handle for the roller crank.
Figure 5 is a partial side elevational view of the side frame.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the ventilator with the side covers and the rolling cover in extended position.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts, I have illustrated the ventilator of my invention embodying the side frame members 2 and 4, with the vertical frame members 6 and 8 secured by means of the screws 9 to the conventional window frame l0. Th'ese frame members are preferably made of angle iron as shown although other materials and shapes may be well employed.
The free ends of the side and vertical members are connected and secured in position by the arcuate supports l2 and 14 of the same material, said arcuate supports having inwardly extending flanges I4 and the transverse braces I5 properly space the supports.
Snap buttons l6 are provided along the exterior of the various members and supports to secure the side coverings in position, and slots 18 are fashioned in the cross frame 5 between the joined ends of the arcuate supports and the side frames 2 and 4. v
A cover plate 20 preferably of metal and having side portions 22 depending therefrom covers the upper portion of the ventilator and provides protection from the elements of the operating mechanism of the roller '24 having a stub shaft 25 iournaled in the arcuate supporton one side and formed with spaced lugs 26,; and journaled on the other arcuate support bymeans of the crank 28 having an aperture in the end thereof asat29. p
The depending portions 22 of the cover have forwardly extending ends fitted into and secured to the arcuate supports I2v and [4 respectively. The brace elements l5 for the frame are connected between the forwardly extending ends of the dependingportions 22 as indicated-at 45. The braces in this manner will not interfere with the operationof the retractible cover 34' and yet give tothe brace members adequate connection to serve their purpose.
A separate handle 30 is shown having a nose 3| for engagement with the aperture of the crank in order that the crank may be operated to rotate the roller from a person inside the room.
The above frame is covered on the sides by the side pieces 32 formed with rows of spaced co-acting snaps 33 for the buttons l6, and a retractible cover 34 of waterproof canvas is fashioned with edges reinforced by metal strips 36 and hooks 38 on the outer edge for engagement with the slots I 8, and slots 40 are provided along the upper edge for engagement with the lugs '26 of the roller 24.
A plate 42 covers an opening 44 in the side piece 22 for removal of the roller if necessary, and in operation the retractible cover is secured to the roller by attaching the slots on the lugs and the cover is then stretched out and the hooks 38 engage with the slots I8. The metal strips along the sides of the canvas cover will ride on the angle frames and will prevent sagging of the cover. In fair weather or whenever so desired, the cover may be raised by unhooking the hooks from the slots l 8 and rotating the roller through the crank by means of the handle 30.
From the above description of the construction and operation of the ventilator of my invention it will be apparent that the device will afford an ornamental and useful addition to any window structure and will afi'ord a safe means of preventing the entrance of rain while still permitting the circulation of air with the upper sash of the window in lowered position.
The ventilator of my invention described above will offer a more advantageous use than the conventional type because the entire structure need not be removed when the ventilator is deemed unnecessary and the canvas coverings on the side and the roll cover may be readily removed.
