Application February 21, 1945, `Serial No. 519,001 4 claims. (c1. 11s- 1103) This invention relates to a branding chute for cattle, and more particularly to such a device adapted to hold a calf or similar animal in position for operation thereupon, such as branding, castration, dehorning, or the like.
A primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved device adapted securely to hold a calf or similar animal, provided with means for securing the head of the animal lin position and squeezing the sides of the same, and correspondingly provided with front and rear means for holding the animal against longitudinal movement through the chute.
An additional object of the invention is the provision of such device which may be readily tilted to its side in such manner that the calf may be readily positioned for operation thereupon.
- A still further object of the invention is the provision of such device provided with a door in the squeeze side thereof, which maybe opened,
whereby ready access may be had to the flankI Figure 1 isa side elevational view of one form of device embodying this inventive concept, certainconcealed parts thereof being indicated Vin dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view ofthe device disclosed in Figure 1 as viewed from the right side thereof, certain parts thereof being broken away;
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view showing a portion of a cattle with its head clamped by the head holder of the invention;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4 4 of Figure 3 and in the direction of the arrows; f
Figure 5 is a rear end view of the device showing it in position for performing an operation on the cattle; and
,Figure is a vfragmentary perspective View showing a part of the horizontally slidable gate and its means for operation.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Having reference now to the drawings there is extensions respectively, is a floor I2 and a side or gate 22 angularly disposed frame members I3, at opposite ends of the device from which ex-A tend transverse supporting members I4, terminating at the upper extremities of vertical up-` rights I5, are secured to the base III. Horizontal transverse frame members I6 and I1, respectively, connect the upper and lower extremities of the uprights I5.
Extending in opposite angular relation, upwardly from the base I0 and oppositely inclined` with respect to the angularly disposed supporting members I3 are posts I8 to guide the animal in entering and leaving the chute. v
Pivotally secured in brackets 2li secured adjacent the upper extremities of the members I3,A
as by pivot pins 2|, is the tiltable gate member 22, from the lower extremity of which extends a. transverse supporting member or pitman 23 pivoted by pin 24', to which is hingedly secured as by means of pivot pins 24 an oppositely disposed squeeze side or gate 25. The pivot pins '24,and 24 consist of parts of the framing of the bracket 34. The bracket 34 is secured.Y to the side A head holder 36 is provided for securing the v head vof a calf by swinging about the vertical hinge pinr3j`. The head holder 36 includeszan arcuate member- 31 `terminating in sleeves '38 which are slidably mounted on horizontally ex tending rods 39, headed as at 40, and secured to an ,intermediate portion Al of the hinge pimA` when rotated about said pivot in a horizontal position with respect thereto.
