UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE# `:2,520,457 j POLE GAIMNG MACHINE Gilbert Vivian Cook, Denver, Colo.
Application November 28, 1947, Serial No. 788,362 2 claims. `(o1. 14e-133) This invention relates to a pole gaining machine, that is, to a device for notc'hing telephone, telegraph, and electric pole line poles for the reception of the wire-carrying cross arms. Such poles are provided with one or more horizontally extending notches or gains of a width to snugly receive a cross arm. The cross arm is secured in the gain by means of a single cross arm bolt extending through the pole. The gains are usually formed by hand. The hand operation is a slow, tedious one, and unless done by experts, results in gains of varying widths and varying inclines.
'Ihe principal object of this invention is to `provide an economical and highly eilicient motor-driven machine which will rapidly and accurately form the gains in the poles at the desired points so as to eliminate hand labor and obtain accurate gains.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the device that it will automatically ad-` just itself to accurately form gains in poles of various sizes and various tapers.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and eiiiciency. These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description of the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved pole gaining machine, as it would appear in use;
Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof;
Fig. 3 is a front view; and
Fig. 4 is a detail section, taken on the line 4 4, Fig. 2.
In the drawing, a conventional pole is indicated at III. The pole is carried on a dolly II provided with track wheels I 2 running upon suitable track rails I3. The pole is supported on the dolly upon rollers I4, which allow it to be rotated to place any selected side of the pole upwardly. The improved pole gaining machine is also mounted on track rails I5 extending at right angles to the rails I3.
The machine comprises a carriage I6 supported from the rails I5 upon track wheels I1. The carriage is provided with transversally aligned bearings I8. A tubular boom I9 is supported by the carriage. The boom I9 is provided intermediate its extremities with two sdewardly exsleeve 23 which is slipped overthe forward ex-l tremity of the boom 9 and positioned between two set collars 24. A U-shaped yoke plate 25 is welded or otherwise secured to the sleeve 23 with its furcations extending forwardly therefrom;
The furcations of the yoke 23 each carries a shaft bearing 26, through which` a rotatable shaft 2 extends carrying a pluralityof dado blades 28 intermediate the bearings 2B, The
shaft 2l is rotated through the medium of a` driven pulley 29, from which an endless belt .3&3 extends to a drive pulley 3| mounted on the shaft of the motor 22.
A side plate 32 extendsupwardly from each side of the yoke plate 25 to support a cross hinge member 33. A connecting rod 34 extends from the cross hinge member 33 to a second cross hinge member 35, which is supported. from the carriage I6 upon bracket arms 36. The cross members 33 and 35 are positioned directly above the shafts 21 and 20, respectively, the distance between the shafts and the cross members being uniform. With this arrangement a parallelogram is formed which maintains the side plates 32 vertical at all angular positions of the boom I9.
The lower edges of the side plates 32 are turned outwardly to form flanges 3l, from each of Which a horizontal runner 38 is suspended upon adjustable suspension bolts 39. Handle brackets 4I! extend forwardly from the flanges 31 to support a handle bar 4I.
In operation, the pole is moved along the rails I3 to the proper position for a cross arm gain. The pole is rotated on the rollers I4 to place the selected side upward. The operator then pulls downwardly on the handle bar 4I, to bring the rotating dado blades against the pole. The handle 4I is then moved forwardly and backwardly, the runners 38 sliding upon the pole, and the carriage I6 moving on the rails I5, to quickly cut a gain across the top side of the pole.
It is desired to call attention to the fact that the entire working head may rotate upon the boom I9 to accommodate any taper in the pole. The depth desired for the gain is pre-set by regulating the suspension bolts 39, to set the runner at any desired spacing above the lower edges of the dado blades 28. The stub shafts 20 are so positioned relative to the extremities of the boom I9 so that the weight of the motor 22 will slightly over balance the weight of the Working head so that when the: handlebar is released" the dado/v blades will rise from the pole andL so that very little effort will be required to bring the blades to the work.
While a speoic form of the improvementl has f been described and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may" beA varied, within the scope of the appendedclaims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus describedj the invention, what is claimedtand desired: secured by LetterssPatent is:Vv
