This-invention relates to `machinesfor lasting shoes and particularly to a novel machine for lasting progressively along the edge of the bottom of a shoe. In one "aspect, this invention constitutes an improvement on the machine disclosed in United Statesj Letters Patent No. 2,326,193, issued on `August 10,"1948,` in the namel ofthe present applicant.
`In the machine of the aforementioned patent, the lasting marginofthestock `to be lasted is tensioned, heiglitwise `of the shoe, andthe shoe is fed along, by means of a pair of inclined rolls which' engage `the` lasting margin and exert a frictional drag thereon." 4`.lsthe lasting margin of the tensionedstocl; leaves these rolls,` it is` wiped inwardly from the edge of,` and pressed against," the shoe bottomiby `means'of a rotary wiper." ,It is ani object of this invention to provide a novel `and `improved `lasting machine` in the use" of which the aforementioned difficulties are avoided. To this end,`the herein illustrated lasting m'achinehas` novel tensioning means comprising a driven roll anda cooperating gripping element, for yieldingly holdingthe lasting margin j of the stock against `thedrivenroll and movable with the stock when pullis exerted thereon, toi gether with'means forl periodically "separating said gripping element and the driven roll so as to cause the driven roll to exert an intermittent frictional pull onthe stock. In common with the machine of the above-mentioned patent, the herein illustrated "machine is provided with a wiper for wiping the lasting margin ofthe tensioned stock inwardly from `the edge of, and for l pressing it againstgf the shoe bottom. Inasmuch as the lasting margin of the stock -is fully released, each time the roll and finger are separated, the shoe may be readily tipped, in a lengthwise direction, without any ndanger of wrinkling the stock on the side of the shoe. Also, the finger, which is drawn along by the lasting margin of the stock, as it is tensioned by the roll, has no tendency to rub off, or otherwise disturb the adhesive coating on the inside surface of the lasting margin of the stock. In addition to tensioning the stock, the intermittent frictional pull applied to the lasting margin, by means of the inclinediroll, also effects a feeding movement of the shoe and, as the shoe is thus fed along, the lasting margin of the tensioned stock is wiped inwardlyfromthe edge of, and pressed firmly against, the bottom ofthe shoe by means of the wiper, herein illustrated as a driven chain.
The above and other objects and features of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment thereof, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and will be pointed out in the claims.

Inasmuch as the intervals when the nger is separated from the roll, bythe two high points |52 on the cam |50, constitute but a small frac-` tionof the time of a complete revolution of the roll ID, the frictional pull which is applied by` the roll, while definitely intermittent in charac ter, is at the same time relatively smooth in its action.

lengthwise direction, to follow the curvature of i its bottom, the lasting margin of` the upper can readily adjust itself between the roll and finger when these members are separated. Thus the tipping of the shoe, for the aforementioned purposes, is facilitated, and, since the lasting mar` gin can adjust itself between the roll and the nger, no danger of forming wrinkles therein e is present. Moreover, inasmuch as the finger I2 moves with the upper, when pull., is exerted thereon, by the roll IU, its operating 'surface 'l2 maintains contact with substantially the same portion of the inside` surface of the `last` ing margin of the upper, when it is pressingthe upper against the roll. Accordingly, there will be little or no tendency for the nger to rub off, or otherwise disturb, the A,adhesive coating thereon. e
Having described the invention, `what `I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent of the United Statesis:
1. A lasting machine having, in combination,
means for tensioning stock to be lasted, in a die*V D rection heightwise of a shoe, comprising a 'driven roll, a cooperating gripping element for yieldingly holding the lasting margin of the stock against the driven roll, and means for periodically separating said gripping element and said driven roll to cause the driven roll to exert an intermittent frictional pull on the lasting margin, said gripping element being movable with the stock when the pull is being exerted by said roll, and means for wiping the lasting margin of the tensioned stock inwardly from the edge of, and for pressing it against, the bottom of the shoe.
2.
