This invention relates to combs, brushes and the like and more particularly to combs of the variety having removable teeth so that when they become worn or broken they can be replaced with new teeth.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a handle and rod arrangement for a comb having removable teeth wherein the teeth can be removed from the rod at the end thereof removed from the handle and without having to remove the handle therefrom and by simply releasing the handle from the rod.
. It is another object of the invention to provide a comb structure of a type having removable teeth elements which can be fitted into a brush body Without incurring or consuming great space or requiring that the body portion of the brush be enlarged.
According to the invention, a handle contains a rod and means for adjusting the rod relative to the handle. Teeth elements are disposed on the rod opposite to the handle end thereof and means is provided whereby the teeth elements will be retained against removal from the rod. This means is an end formation from which the rod is released or in another form of the invention an end formation which is removable from the rod end. In both forms, the teeth elements are removed from the rod at the end thereof removed from the handle.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Referring now to the figures, 2| represents a combined brush and comb comprising a brush and comb handle 22 having a body portion 23 integral therewith. Brush clusters 23 are secured to the body portion 23. The handle portion 2| has a hole 24 extending therethrough and in communication with a slot 25 extending upwardly from the bottom face of the body portion and throughout substantially its full length except for an endformation 26 serving as a stop for tooth elements 21 (Fig. 12) adapted to be disposed in the slot 25. Extending through the hole 24 is a tooth-retaining rod 28. This rod extends into and throughout the length of the body recess 25 and for that portion of the rod which extends within the recess 25 it has alongitudinally-extending guide 29 which cooperates with key way slots 3! of the tooth elements 21 whereby to retain the tooth when upon the rod against rotation and disalignment with respect to one another. The end of the rod 28 when in its retaining position extends into a recess or depression 32 of the same section as the rod whereby to prevent the rotation of the rod relative to the body portion 23.
The opposite end of the recess 25 has a slot 33 for receiving the opposite end of guide 29 and serves also to prevent rotation of the rod 28. The guide 29 is slidable in the slot 33 as the rod 28 is axially adjusted to release or receive tooth elements.
The handle 2| has an internally threaded fer- 3 rule 35 embedded therewlthin adapted to receive a slit externally threaded sleeve 35 adapted to rotate in an annular recess 35 on the rod 28. Since the ferrule 34 is fixed to the handle any rotation of the sleeve 35 therewithin will effect axial adjustment of the sleeve and of the rod 28 within the handle and body portions. The sleeve 35 may have a radially-extending flange 31, and a cap 39 witha screw driver slot can be secured over the end'facethereof by rivetsM. This cap 39 receives the end of the rod 28.
As the sleeve 35 is turned through the agency of the cap 39 the rod 28 will be withdrawn from the recess 32 of the body end Edasillustrated in Fig. 4. This is sufficient to permitithe removal of the teeth 2'! for replacement or cleaning;

been added to the rod the sleeve 35 can be rotated in the opposite directionand the rod end-returned to the recess 32 to secure the tooth elements in place upon therod; A spring washer la can be disposed on the rod to make certain that the recess is filled throughout its length with tooth elements andto prevent anyslight looseness between tooth elements.
Referring now to the form of the invention shown in Figs.- 5 to 12 iilrepresents a rod having a threaded end 46 and a tooth element receiving portion 'll witha guide extendinglongitudinally therealong. If it is desired to remove teeth elements 21, from the portion 4T of the red, the sleeve 6| is loosened to release the end formation 52. The end formation 52 is turned uponrthe rod so that its recesses 54 register with the pins 5| andthe end formation 52 is then axially removed. from the rod. The pins 5| should then be removed to permit the removal of' the tooth elements 21. To assemble the tooth elements andmake the. comb rigid, the operation is reversed.

A comb, comprising a rod having a guide extending along one side of a portion thereof, a handle axially slidably mounted on the remaining portion of said rod, individual tooth elements engaged on the end of said rod formed with said guide, said tooth elements being formed with key way slots engaged by said guide to prevent rotation of said tooth elements on said rod, an end formation engageable with the end of the rod adjacent the endmost tooth element remote from said handle, and means on said handle cooperative with the other end of said rod for moving the rod axially of said handle to hold the tooth elements in position on said rod between said end formation and the inner end of said handle, said moving means comprising a sleeve rotatively mounted on the said other end of said rod, the outer end of said handle being formed with a threaded annular recess of a diameter to receive said sleeve, threads formed on the outer periphery of said sleeve engaging the threads of said recess, and an outwardly directed flange formed on the outer end of said sleeve and abutting the outer end of said handle for moving the rod longitudinally as the sleeve is turned relative to said handle.

A comb, comprising a rod having a guide extending along one side of a portion thereof, a handle axially slidably mounted on the remaining ortion ofs'aidrod, individual tooth elements engaged on the end of said rod formed with said guide, s'aidtooth elements being formed with key way slots engaged by said guide to prevent rotation of said tooth elements on said rod, an end formation ,engageable with the end of the rod adjacent the endmost tooth element remote from said handle, and means on said handle cooperative with the other end of said rod for moving the rod axially of said handle to hold the tooth elements in position on said rod between said end formation and the inner end of said handle, said guide being extended to a point short of the free end of said rod, a projection extending radially from the end of said rod engaged by said end formation, said end formation being formed with a recess for receiving the said first end of said rod and a slot extended radially fromv said recess for receiving said projection, said end formation also being formed with an internal annular recess concentric with said first recess and in communication with said first recess and said slot, said annular recess being at a location to receive said projection when the end formation is turned relative to said rod with said rod extended fully into said first recess so as to retain said end formation in position of said rod.

A comb, comprising a rod having a guide extending along one side of a portionthereof, a handle on the remaining portion of said rod, individual tooth elements engaged on the end of said rod formed with said guide, said tooth elements being formed with key way slots engaged by said guide to prevent rotation of said tooth elements on said rod, and end formation engageable with the free end of said rod, and means on said handle cooperative with the adjacent end of said rod for moving the rod axially of said handle to hold the tooth elements in position on said rod between said end formation and the inner end of said handle, said guide being extended to a point short of the free end of said rod, a projection extending from the free end of said rod, said end formation being formed with a recess for receiving the free end of said rod and a slot extended radially from said recess for receiving said projection, said end formation also being formed with an internal annular recess concentric with said first recess and in communication with said first recess and said slot, said annular recess being at a location to receive said projection when the end formation is turned relative to said rod with said rod extended fully into said first recess so as to retain said end formation in position of said rod, said end of said rod being formed with two of said projections extended from diametrically opposite sides thereof and said end formation being formed with two slots extended from diametrically opposite sides of said first recess for receiving said projections.

A comb, comprising a rod having a guide extending along one side of a portion thereof, a handle on the remaining portion f said rod, individual tooth elements engaged on the end of said rod formed with said guide, said tooth elements being formed with key way slots engaged by said guide to prevent rotation of said tooth elements on said rod, an end formation engageable with the free end of said rod, and means on said handle cooperative with the adjacent end of said rod for moving the rod axially of said handle to hold the tooth elements in position on said rod between said end formation and the inner end of said handle, said moving means com- REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record. in the file of this patent:
