3 Claims.
The invention relates to improvements in hook retaining means for fishing rods as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form a part of the same.
The invention consists essentially of the novel means of retaining fish hooks as pointed out broadly and specifically in the claims for novelty following a description containing an explanation in detail of acceptable forms of the invention.
The objects of the invention are to provide a hook retaining means which may be easily mounted on the handle of a fishing rod; to furnish a means whereby a fish hook may be securely and safely held on the handle portion of a fishing rod; to eliminate wear and tear on a fishing rod by avoiding hooking the fish hooks in the cork portion of the handle; to furnish a hook retaining means which will be simple and inexpensive to manufacture; and generally to provide a hook retaining means for fishing rods that will be durable and efiicient for its purpose.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the hook retaining means.
Figure 2 is a side sectional view as taken on the line 3-3 in Figure 1. I I
Figure 3 is a plan view of the hook retaining means showing a fish hook secured thereto.
Figure 4 is a side sectional view as taken on the line 55 in Figure 4.
Figure 5 is a side view showing the hook retaining means mounted on the handle portion of a fishing rod.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.
Referring to the drawings, the hook retaining means consists of a casing as indicated by the numeral I5. In this instance the casing I5 is cylindrical in shape and has the ends of same closed, but may be any other suitable shape with open or closed ends without generally affecting the advantages of the invention. The casing I5 has the slot I6 in the upper side of the cylindrical Wall of same which is adapted to accommodate the bent portion adjacent to the barb of the fish hook.
The extension strips I I and I8 are permanently secured to the underside of the casing I5 and project past each end thereof. The sleeve I9 is adapted to slide on the casing l5 between the extension strips I1 and I8. This sleeve I9 has an open slot in one end thereof adapted to coincide with the slot I6 in the casing I5. The knurled 2 portion 20 on the casing I5 is adapted to hold the sleeve I9 substantially in position when the latter is slidably moved over same.
In the use of the invention the casing I5 is mounted on the handle portion of a fishing rod 2| by engaging the extension strips I1 and I8 with the rings 22 and 23. These rings are suitably secured on the handle portion of the fishing rod 2| and adapted to have the extension strips I1 and I8 held thereunder. In placing the bent portion of the fishing hook in the casing I5 the sleeve I9 is located so that the slot I6 in the casing is open. The sleeve I9 is then slidably moved so that theopen slot in same engages the hook and holds same substantially against one end of the slot It in the casing l5.
It will be seen from the foregoing that a hook retaining means has been provided that will facilitate carrying a fishing rod with the line and hook connected thereto.
What I claim is:
1. In a hook retaining means for fishing rods, a casing, extension strips secured on the underside of said casing and projecting past the ends thereof, said extension strips being adapted to attach said casing to the handle portion of a fishing rod, said casing having a slot located in a wall of the same, and a sleeve slidably fitted over said casing and adapted to slide between the inner ends of said extension strips, the slot in said casing permitting the bent portion adjacent to'the point of a fish hook to be accommodated in said casing, and said sleeve being adapted to partially close the slot in said casing thus securing said bent portion adjacent to the point of said fish hook substantially within said casing.
2. In a hook retaining means for fishing rods, a casing, extension strips secured on the underside of said casing and projecting past the ends thereof, said extension strips being adapted to attach said casing to the handle portion of a fishing rod, said casing having a slot located in a wall of the same, and a sleeve slidably fitted over said casing and adapted to slide between the inner ends of said extension strips, the slot in said casing permitting the bent portion adjacent to the point of a fish hook to be accommodated in said casing, said casing having a knurled portion, said sleeve being adapted to partially close the slot in said casing thus securing said bent portion adj acent to the point of said fish hook substantially within said casing, and said sleeve engaging with said knurled portion on said casing when the slot in said casing is partially closed.
3. In a hook retaining means for fishing rods,
a casing, extension strips secured on the underside of said casing and projecting past the ends thereof, said extension strips being adapted to attach said casing to the handle portion of a fishing rod, said casing having a slot located in a wall 5 of the same, and a sleeve slidably fitted over said casing and adapted to slide between the inner ends of said extension strips, said sleeve having,
an open slot in the same of the samewidth as the slot in said casing and is registerabl'e with the slot in the casing and adapted to partially close it, the slot in said casing permitting the bentportion adjacent to the barb of a fish hook to; be accommodated in said casing, and the open slot:
in said sleeve straddling the .bent portion of said fish hook when said sleeve partially closes. the
