Verner F. Rogers, Denver, Colo.
Application December 17, 1945, Serial No. 635,507
The invention as described herein, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, consists of a container for drills, an object of which is to provide a case for holding a set of drills graduated in diameter and length so arranged that a drill of a desired size may be instantly located.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drill case arranged to hold a series of drills of graduated lengths in vertical position and from which the drills can not be displaced therefrom through inverting the case.
A further object of this invention is to provide a molded drill stand provided with a transparent plastic cover so arranged to retain each drill in its apportioned position in the stand.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of means whereby delicate drills ranging from the smallest diameter up can be orderly arranged and supported vertically in order that a desired drill may be instantly located.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drill stand having a cover provided with means for retaining each drill in its apportioned position and means whereby the cover must be placed in a predetermined position upon the stand.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure l is an elevational view of the case,
Figure 2 is a sectional View on line 2-2 thereof,
Figure 3 is a sectional View on line 3-3 of Figure l,
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the same line looking toward arrow 4,
Figure 5 is a detail of a clamping ring, and
Figure 6 is a bottom plan view of a base member.
While one embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the above referred to drawings, it is to be understood that they are merely for the purpose of illustration and that various changes in construction may be resorted to in the course of manufacture in order that the invention may be utilized to the best advantage according to circumstances which may arise, without in any way departing from the spirit and intention of the device, which is to be limited only in accordance with the appended claims. And while there is stated the primary field of utility of the invention it remains obvious that it may be employed in any other capacity wherein it may be found applicable.
In the accompanying drawings, and in the following specification, the same reference charaoters are used to designate the same parts and elements throughout' and in which I0, refers to the invention in its entirety and II, indicates a base and I2, a cover therefor. The base is of molded material either plastic or metal and is of inverted cup shape, the vertical flange I3, of whichl terminates at its lower end in an outwardly extending annular flange I4, upon which is adapted to` seat the lower end I5, of said cover I2. v
Thek top wall I6, of the base is provided with a series of annular arranged depending cylinders Il, I8, etc., in graduated lengths andwhich are also integral with the side wall I9, of the base. From the upper surface 20, of the said base are blind bores or holders 2I, 22, etc., formed in the molding process and which are graduated in diameter and depth to receive standard drills 23 and 24, of graduated sizes, the said holes being of diameters and depth to receive only the Shanks 25 and 26, of the drills intended to seat therein. Each of the said holes is provided with an indicia 2l, to indicate the size of its particular drill, these indices are sunk into the said surface 28, in the casting process. There is also provided a second annular series of wells or holes 28, 29, etc., inwardly of the outer series which provide supports for other sizes of drills (not shown) as indicated by the indicia 30.
lThe cover I2, is moulded preferably from Lucite or some other plastic material and its upper wall 3|, has projecting from the inner peripheral surface 32, thereof a depending spiral ange 33, integral with the said top wall and the side wall 34, and which is inclined longitudinally from its deepest terminal 35 to flush with said surface 32, whereby the flange will seat against the upper ends of each of the drills 23 and 24, and hold the same from accidentally leaving their seats in the base, when the cover is seated thereon.
The side wall 34, of the cover at its lower end IS, terminates in an annular outwardly extending flange 38, which seats upon the base ange I4. Projecting up from the flange I4, is a vertical guide rib or key 39, which is adapted to align with the positioning slot or notch 40 in the flange 33, of said cover I2, when seated on the base and which is adapted to extend into the keyway 4I, formed in the lower edge of the cover, whereby the cover can be placed upon the base in one position only so that the ange 33, will conform to the stepped relation of the terminals 46, of said drills. Encornpassing the lower end of the cover and seating upon the flange 38 thereof, is a resilient open ring 4l, the ends 48 Changes in shape, size and rearrangement details and parts such as come within the puri view' of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
and 49, of which form a gap 50, through which the said key 39 projects. This ring will tend to bind the lower end of the cover frictionally upon the base and also forms a ringer grip by means of which the cover may be removed from the base.
From the foregoing specification it will become apparent that the invention disclosed will adequately accomplish the functions for which it has been designed and in an economical manner and that its` simplicity, accuracy and ease ofoperation are such as to provide a, relatively inexpensive device considering what it will accomplish y vertical key, said cylinders being formed with verand that it will nd an important place in the art to which it appertains when once placed on the market.
It is thought that persons skilled 'in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description` in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
vof
i Having now described the invention that which is claimed to be new and desired to be procured by Letters Patent is:
A drill case comprising a raised cylindrical base formed with a plurality of circumferentially vdisposed depending cylinders of progressively lengthening height and an annular flange formed about its lower end being formed with an upstanding tical drill receiving bores for drills of various lengths and diameters to be disposed in progressive sequence in said bores, a cylindrical cover formed with an annular ange about its lower endfhaving a positioning notch formed therein receiving said key when said cover is positioned upon said base, a spiral positioning flange Xed on the inner top surface of said cover for engaging the upper ends of the various length drills disposed in said bores to secure the drills immobile in said case, and a split locking ring disposed about the notched lower end of said cover resiliently securing said cover in closed position upon said base.
