IMPROVEMENT IN BINDING APPARATUS FOR HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 25,13l, dated August 16, 1859.
To atl 'whom it may concern:
Bu it known that I, CHARLES H. MoALEER, of Chambersburg, iu the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Binding Apparatus for Harvesters; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part ot' this specitication.
The drawing represents a perspective view ofthe apparatus upon a supplemental platform attached to the harvester.
This apparatus is constructed as follows:
D D represent aframe secured firmly upon the platform A. The shaft e has its bearings in the frame D D, as represented in the drawing, and to this shaft two transverse curved arms are secured, as seen at b b in black and red lines. These curved arms are connected by the cross-tie t at the foot, and project at their opposite ends beyond the shalt e, to which they are attached, and are provided with pendent hinged links K, connected at their lower ends by the foot-piece or treadlef.
h is a caster-wheel fastened to a crossbar directly under and to support the apparatus, or platform on which itis located, and C C are tables or seats ou which the sheaf may be bound or tied.
The platform Ais so adjusted, in its connection with the platform B, as to admit the raker to conveniently deposit the grain upon the binding apparatus or elevator; or the platform B may be sufficiently enlarged as to permit the apparatus or elevator to be located thereon, and also the binders tables or seats.
The operation of this apparatus for elevating the gavel to the binders and compressing it is as follows: The raker, who rides upon the machine in any convenient position, by a sweep of his rake deposits the cut grain upon the curved arms b b of the apparatus, when one of the binders, placinghis footupon the treadle f,elevates the gave] and compresses it between the curved arms b b and the posts of frame D D, (the shaft e turning in its bear1ngs,) and grasps the band, which he had previously thrown longitudinally across the shaft e and tie t, when he transfers the sheaf to the table or seats C U, where itis bound or tied and discharged.
The advantages of this apparatus over the ordinary mode of binding in the stubble consists principally in gathering up and binding all that is ont, and in saving the grain shelled out in the process of raking and binding by means of the plattorlmwhich in theother modes is lost upon the ground, and in the ease and facility with which the work can be done by two binders, thus reducing the amount ot' labor required and saving the expenses ot' the same.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my impovement in binding apparatus for harvester-s, what I claim therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The apparatus or elevator for raising and compressing the gavel, constructed and'operating in the manner substantially as described.
