' This invention relates to a; lipstick holder and more particularly to the type of lipstick holder which includes a mirror.
object of the present invention is to provide a lipstick holder which will cause the mirror torise ready for operation as the lipstick is withdrawn and to close as the lipstick is returned to the holder, the operation of removing and returning the lipstick being the cause of the mirror'rising and closing.
' 'An object of the present invention is to furnish a self-contained lipstick kit, so that in applying the lipstick the user is not forced to open any other piece of 'paraphernalia'such as a compact, in order to have the use of the mirror.
A further object of the present invention is that, in providing a lipstick mirror in such relation to the lipstick, the automatic operation of the mirror shall be brought about very simply by a mechanism which is not'likely' todeteriorate in use.
Another and further object is that the method of operation of the lipstick holder shall be so simple as to be practically foolproof.
In accomplishing the objects oi the present in:- vention, a lipstick holder casing is provided of tubular shape, with two square corners adjacent each other and the side opposite the adjacent square corners rounded so as to be substantially semi-cyclindri'cal; the sides of the tube between the squa'recorners and therounded corners being substantially flat and merging into the rounded corners. On the-flat side of the case between the adjacent square corners is formed a large shallow recess occupying all of'that-side with the exception of a narrow border. In 'said' recess is pivotally connected the mirror, by pivot pins located at opposite ends of the recess and substantially at corners thereof.
The mirror comprises along one longitudinal border thereof a tube of smalldiameter surrounding the pivot which are mounted in the casing. This hinge tubeof the mirror is provided on its outside diameter with a helicai groove which describes a quarter of a turn in the course of the length of the hinge tube. The lipstick inner case is'p'rovided with a bent pin which travels in the said groove as the lipstick is withdrawn orreturned to'the outer case and theaction 'of the pin traveling in the helicalgroove 2. claims in which thevarious novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the'accompanying drawings forming a material-part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspectiveview of the invention embodied as described above.
Fig.2; is aperspective view of the outer case alone oi the invention as embodied. Fig; 37 is a perspective view of the lipstick and lipstick inner case.
' Fig; 4 is' a perspective view of the same from a diiierent angle, showing the lipstick retracted and inbroken lines.
. F igyfijis a'front endeleva'tion ofthe same.
isan enlarged view" of the mirror and helicalhinge tube partly broken away.
F i'g. 'Tis adetail, partly in section, of the hinge construction for the mirror.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the improved lipstick holder It comprises the outer case: II and the inner case I2. Outer case II is partly cylindrical in shape; having the semi-cylin drical side l3j and the square corners I4 and I5. The flat sides I6; I! extend from corners Id, I5
i toward and mergewith the semi-cylindrical side I3. Outer case II may further preferably be furnished with an inner cylindrical tube It for receiving the lipstick inner case I2. The flat side IWbetW'ee'n theadjacent square corners It, I5 is of open rectangular construction, being recessed to'receive a rectangular cover 20 as long and wide as side I9itself. Recess 2I in side I9 is adapted to receive cover 20. Within the recess 2!, the outer' cas'e I I* is furnished with two pivots 22 disposedon a longitudinal axis relative to outer case H and located near corners of recess 2| and on thesameside thereof; As more clearly seen from Figi fi, cover 20 is provided with a mirror 23 extending" substantially all along and across the inside thereof. Cover 20 along one of its side borders is formed into a tube of small diameter which-tube serves as a hinge tube, surrounding pivots 22to form a pivotal mounting for cover 28. Hinge tube, 24 is formed with the helical groove which describes a quarter of a turn, that is, 90' 'degrees, fin the course of extending from one end to the other of tube 2!.
' Qil'eendifi of casing II c1osed, and the other endis provided with an opening 21 leading into the inner tube I'8 thereof. End 26 will be de'sig nat'edthe inner end of the device and the opposite end withopen'i'ng'fl will be considered the outer'end thereof; Groovef251 a't the inner end of cover2fl*-"lies 'on a radius' of';tube 24 substantially parallel with-"cover 20, and attheouter end of tube 24, groove 25 lies on a radius of tube 24 which is substantially perpendicular to cover in Outer end portion 28 of outer casing H is formed with an irregularly shaped groove 29, the purpose of which will be explained hereinafter. Tube 24 is mounted on pivots 22 in manufacture so that pivots 22 and tube '24 constitute a pivotal mounting of cover 20 and mirror 23. Mirror 23 is thus swingable from a closed position illustrated in Fig. l, in which cover 20 is flush with the outside of case H, to the open position illustrated in Fig. 2, representing a traverse of 90 degrees.
Lipstick inner case [2, is of conventional lipstick construction generally. That is to say, it contains lipstick 30 and may contain any conventional means of propelling or retracting the same within the tube 3 l, the particular means for propelling and retracting not being material to the invention and not being illustrated. One end of inner case I2 is closed by a plate of closed U-shape, corresponding to the cross section of outer case H so as to be flush therewith when inner case [2 is inserted in outer case I I as shown in Fig. 1.
Tube 3] is provided near its open end with a pin 33 which is brazed or otherwise firmly attached to tube 3i and extends substantially radially therefrom and has a terminal portion extending substantially parallel to upper surface 34 of end plate 32. Pin 33 passes through groove or slot 29 as inner holder 12 is inserted in outer holder I I. Slot 29 further performs the important function of guiding pin 33 so that it may enter groove 25, the near end of which will be angularly coincident with slot 29 when cover 20 is in the open position of Fig. 2. Only the terminal portion of pin 33 enters groove '25, and as it travels towards the inner end of groove 25 and inner case ll it imparts rotation to cover 20 around pivots 22 and by the time it has reached the inner end of groove 25, cover 20 is tightly closed as in Fig. 1. As the lipstick inner holder 12 is withdrawn from case I i, the process is reversed and cover 20 bearing mirror 23 is brought to the open position of Fig. 2.
A slot 34 is formed in floor 35 of recess 2| in order to permit passage of pin 33. An ejecting knob 36 is connected to the lipstick base to move the lipstick in or out of the tube 3| by sliding the knob 36 along the slot 31 formed in the tube 3|.
A slot 38 is formed in the side wall 16, to permit the knob 35 to be placed in the casing H without disturbing the setting of the lipstick.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
