Claims. 1

This invention relates to score boards.

The invention has for its salient object to provide a score board so constructed and arranged that the score in a game can be easily indicated and will be clearly visible.

Another object of the invention is to provide a board of the character described that is simple and practical in construction and can be economically manufactured.

Further objects of the invention will appear from the followin specification taken in connection with the drawings'whi ch form a part of this application, and in which Fig, 1 is a front elevation of a score board constructed in accordance with the invention;

Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly broken away and partly in section, of the score board shown in Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional elevation, on an enlarged scale, taken substantially on line 3--3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;

Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional elevation, on an enlarged scale, taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;

Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional elevation, on an enlarged scale and partly broken away, taken substantially on line 5-5 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows; and

In the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the score board com gprises a back plate or support H] to which is secured a casing comprising side walls H and H which are secured to the back plate, and a front plate l3, preferably formed of glass and opaque, the front plate being held in position by suitable securing means, such as screws M.

A frame is secured over the front face of the plate l3 and comprises marginal portions 2! and 22 which extend over the lateral edges of the plate and also portions 24 and 25 which extend over the top and bottom edges of the plate l3.

The plate [3 is opaque forthe major portion of its area and may have an opaque coating on the back thereof. The central longitudinal portion of the plate has a plurality of numbers or figures, 1 to 21 inclusive, cut out in the opaque surface so as to permit light to pass therethrough, thereby illuminating these numbers or figures.

The frame 20 has a longitudinal opening I bounded by inturned flanges 3!, this opening being disposed in front of the central scoring portion having the figures or numbers thereon.

The frame 28 has formed therein on each side of the central opening 30, a plurality of transverse openings 33, one of the openings 33 being formed opposite each number or figure of the central scoring portion of the board. The openings 33 are formed by cutting holes in the frame 20 and bending the marginal portions of the holes inwardly, as shown at 34. In each of the openings 33 there is slidably mounted a block 35 having flanges 36 and 31 which are disposed between the front surface of the glass plate 13 and the flanges 34. Each block 35 is substantially half as long as the length of the opening 33. At the inner end of each opening 33, or at the end disposed nearest the central scoring portion, the opaque surface of the glass is cut away to form a transparent arrow or pointer 38, pointing toward the central scoring section or vertical row of figures l to 21 inclusive.

There is formed on the glass above the left hand section of the frame 20, a. letter A, this letter being cut out in the opaque surface to admit light therethrough. The frame 28 has an opening 43 to expose the letter A. A letter C is correspondingly formed above the right hand section of the scoring board and is visible through an opening 4|.

In order to illuminate the central scoring section and the numbers or figures formed therein, a light tube, such as a. neon tube is mounted in back of the plate l3 and is enclosed within a casing 46 which is formed within a casing 43, which in turn is mounted on the support l0 and is disposed between this support and the plate I3. The light tube may be of any desired color, such, for instance, as white.

The section at the left of the central row of figures, viewing Fig. 1, is illuminated by a light tube 48, such as a red tube, enclosed Within the casing 41, and a tube 49 which may be blue or any other desired color is disposed in back of the section of the scoring board at the right of the central section, viewing Fig. 1. The tubes 45, 48 and 49 may be supplied with current from a transformer T which is fed through a wire 50 from a suitable power line.

The tube 48 will illuminate the arrows or pointare 38 disposed at the left of the central row of figures when the blocks 35 are moved to the left hand end of the openings 33. The arrows or pointers at the right of the central scoring section will also be exposed when the blocks 35 are moved to the right hand end of the openings 33.

The score is kept in the following manner. Assume that A makes 3 on his first play. The block 35 in the vertical column A opposite the number 3 will be moved to the left, thereby illuminating the arrow or pointer and the light from the red tube 48 will cause a red arrow to point to the number 3, thus indicating that A, who has the red color, has made three points. Next assume that C on his first play makes two points. He will then move his block 35 opposite the point 2 to the right hand end of the opening 33, thus exposing the arrow and causing the blue light to shine through the arrow, indica ing that C has made two points. If, on the second play, A makes four more points, he will move his block opposite the number '7 to the left, indicating that the total number of his points is 7.

On the particular score board illustrated in Fig. 1, if two players only are playing the game the g me is ended when the first player totals fifteen points. However, if four players are playing the game, or two pairs of partners, the partners on one side will total their scores in the column A and the partners on the opposite side on the column C and the game will end when one side or the other has made twenty-one points.

The game board is supported on the Wall by means of laterally extending tabs 5! through which screws or other suitable securing means are passed.

Although one specific embodiment of the invention has been particularly shown and described it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the arrangement and in the construction of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, as expressed in the following claims.

What I claim is:

1. A score board for indicating scores of a pair of players, said board having a central, vertically arranged scoring section, said section having scoring indicia thereon, said score board having disposed on each side of said scoring section, opposite each indicia, selective means for indicating on the indicia of the central section the scores of the respective players, said means consisting of an opaque member having light transmitting portions pointing to the indicia, movable members arranged to expose or obstruct said portions in different positions thereof, and means for illuminating said portions.

2. A score board for indicating scores of a pair of players, said board comprising an opaque plate, said plate having thereon a vertically arranged central scoring section consisting of a series of indicia formed on the plate and adapted. to transmit light therethrough, a sourceof light behind said plate, said plate also having on each side of said central section, opposite each indicia, selective means for indicating the score of the respective players thereon, said means consisting of light transmitting portions on the plate opposite the indicia, movable members arranged to expose or obstruct said portions in different positions thereof, and means for illuminating said portions.

A score board for indicating scores of a pair of players, said board comprising a back plate, an opaque plate carried thereby and spaced therefrom, a casing mounted over said opaque plate, a central longitudinally extending opening in said casing, a vertical series of indicia on the opaque plate exposed by said opening, said indicia being arranged to transmit light through said opaque plate, said casing having a vertical series of parallel openingsat each side of said longitudi nally extending opening, said parallel openings being disposed opposite to and alined with said indicia, each indicia having an opening at each side thereof, said opaque plate having a light transmitting portion in back of each parallel opening, movable selective means in each parallel opening adapted to obscure the light transmitting portion or to expose said portion, means for illuminating indicia, and means in the casing for illuminating said openings.

A score board for indicating scores of a pair of players, said board having a central, vertically arranged scoring section, said section having scoring indicia thereon, said score board having disposed on each side of said scoring section, opposite each indicia, selective means for indicating on the indicia of the central section the scores of the respective players, said indicating means consisting of means on opposite sides of said central scoring section for indicating the scores thereon, and a movable member mounted on the score board and associated with each of said indicating means, adapted When in one position of movement to conceal said indicating means and F movable relative thereto and when in another position of movement to expose said means and indicate a score.

5. A score board for indicating scores of a pair of players, said board having a central, vertically arranged scoring section, said section having scoring indicia thereon, said score board having disposed on each side of said scoring section, opposite each indicia, selective means for indicating on the indicia of the central section the scores of the respective players, said indicating means consisting of means on opposite sides of said central scoring section for indicating the scores thereon, and a movable member mounted on the score board, associated with each of said indicating means and movable relative thereto and movable toward and away from the score board, said movable members and indicating means being so relatively constructed and arranged that when the movable members are disposed in one posi tion of movement the indicating means will indicate the scores on the score board.
