Description

June '20, l 950 M. E. HARRIS BOTTLE CARRIER Filed 001:. 23, 1946 ATT RNEY Patented June 20 1950 m TED .socerta CARRIER" 'Mdrwn- E. HarrIs; Eli icago, II-L Applicationflctoberizii, lfidserialfhlo."711E659 1 invention relat'es to improvements inbot- .ttle carriers and is more particularly concerned withdevices -of a kind useful for carrying'bottledvgoods; such as, for example, carbonated beverages. ;An object of the invention is to provide abottlecarrier which is adapted to receive a plutrality-of bottles suspended'at their neck portions in -such a way as to avoid their being bumped ,-together while being carried. I
ilnother object is to provide a bottle carrier of: the kind from which bottles are suspended at --their-neck portions, withmeans to prevent accikiental displacement of a bottle while suspended. Jmother object'is to provide an inexpensive bottle carrier .of a kind that is durably 'con- -s tructed, light .in weight andhighly satisfactory Jinuse; and one which isadapted to receive adveritisingmaterial. v
Other 'and further objects of'the prs'entinvention :will be apparent from the following description and claims and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing. Other embodiments of the invention embodying the same principle may be us'eiiand structural changes may be made as desired by those skilled in the'art without departing from the present invention-and a purview of the appended claims.
I In the-drawing: I
Fig. In a plan view of the bottle carrier showing the carrying handle broken away.
- Fig.'-2 is a central vertical sectional view-taken on line 2'2 of Fig. l, showingfin dotted lines, bottles suspended therefrom.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the bottle carrier, embodying the features of the present invention, is fashioned from sheet stock substantially circular in shape and includes a vertical surrounding wall portion II and a frustro-conical bottom wall I2. The bottom Wall [2 is dished in the manner illustrated so as to dispose its central area l3 below the plane of its margin with the surrounding circular bottom wall portion inclined downwardly inwardly radially. The central area I3 preferably is formed with an up- .standing boss I4 and the circular inclined area .of said bottom wall has a plurality of circumferentially spaced key-hole shaped slots l5 surrounding the central area l3. Each of the key- .hole shaped slots I5 is fashioned with its narrower slot portion [5a extending toward the central area [3 and its wider slot portions l5b disposed outwardly radially relative thereto.

It should be observed at this time that the key hole slots +5 are so arrangedand spaced r'elative to the other 'that when a plurality ofbottles are-"suspended therethrough, the lower portions ference, are maintained in outwardly inclined positions substantially parallel to the plane of the 'incline'd bottom wall #12 so as to prevent s'aid b'ottles from contacting one: another.
--Inadvertant displacement of bottleoutward- 51y ra'dially along itsirela'ted slot 1| 5 is prevented by' means Iinteg rally attached to the bossiM. Such=-'means 'is best shown in Fig. 21 Landwit consists of a slightly dishedpiece of circul'ar-stock MB rivete'dyas at '19, or otherwise secured at its icenter 'to. thecboss I 4. The circular ipiece IB is vote Idiame'terato disposeits peripheral-wmarg-in outwardly of the iperipher'al edge of each ofwthe .bottles l 6nwhen they. are suspendedthroughzlthe --narrower-;slot'portion l-5a, and saidi circular member isiadapted toibear resiliently against the-bot- 5131871130135 to thereby prevent their rocking im-their .asuspensionl mounting. A A downwardly -.str uckcircular bead 2| is formed on the peripheral margin of the circular piece, which bead overlaps the margins of the bottle tops underlying the same. Accordingly, each bottle is resiliently retained in place in the carrier and may be shifted outwardly radially into Wider slot portions l5b upon overcoming the frictional resistance afforded by the overlapping bead 2|.
A carrying handle 22 may be fixedly attached as by means of rivets 23 to the upper edge of the circular wall I l to afford means for handling the bottle carrier.
It should be quite evident at this time that the circular wall area ll afiords means to receive suitable advertising media which may be imprinted thereon or embossed therein and that, while a preferred form of construction has been illustrated in detail in the accompanying drawings and fully described in the foregoing specification, the invention is capable of embodying a variety of modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.

axial boss extending upwardly therefrom and to which the circular member is secured.
4. A bottle carrying device comprising a dished member having a series of annularly-spaced hot the neck-receiving slots for supporting bottles by their necks, and resilient means spaced above said member and overlying at least a portion of each of said slots for holding said bottles against inadvertent outward radial displacement.
5'. A bottle carrying device comprising a dished member having a series of annularly-spaced bottle neck-receiving slots for supporting bottles by their necks, and a resilient circular member concentricwith said series of slots but spaced above 2 said member and overlying at least a portion of each Of said slots for holding said bottles against inadvertent outward radial displacement.
2. A bottle carrying device comprising a shal low container having its bottomrwall radially infclineddownwardly inwardly to locate its medial .area below the plane of its margin, said bottom wall having circumferentially spaced key-hole shaped slots surrounding its medial area arranged so that the narrower portions of said slots are below the plane of the wider portions of said slots whereby a plurality of bottles may be inserted at their neck portions into the wider slot portions and be carried downwardly into the narrower slot portions so as to be suspended below the bottom wall, and a resilient circular member spaced above the bottom wall and adapted to overlie at least a part of the narrower slot portion to prevent movement upwardly of bottles suspended a:
through said slots.
3. A bottle carrying device comprising a shallow container having its bottom wall radially inclined downwardly inwardly to locate its medial area below the plane of its margin, said bottom wall having circumferentially spaced key-hole shaped slots surrounding its medial area arranged 'so that the narrower portions of said slots are below the plane of the wider portions of said slots whereby a plurality of bottles may be inserted at least a part of the narrower slot portion to pre- 50 ventmovement upwardlyof bottles suspended through said slots, said bottom wall-having an 6. A bottle carrying device comprising a member having a series of annularly-spaced bottle neck-receiving slots arranged for supporting bottles by their'necks'a'nd resilient means spaced above said member and overlying at least a portion of each'of said slots for holding said bottles against inadvertent outward radial displacement and in inclined suspended positions. 1 r
7. A bottlecarrying device comprising a member having a plurality of spaced bottle neck-receiving slots arranged for supporting bottles by their necks, and resilient means spaced above said member and overlying at least a portion of each of said slots for holding said bottles against displacement and in inclined suspended positions."
' 8; A dished member having a centrally disposed boss in the concave surface thereof, and a series of annularly-spaced bottle neck-receiving slots for supporting bottles by their necks, and a resilient circular member supported on said boss and overlying at least a portionof each of said slots for holding said bottles against displacement and in inclined suspended positions.
