HAIR CUTTING GUIDE Original Filed Aug. 14, 1946 Inventor Bertrand Arno/ d Patented June 13,1950
UNITED PATENT OFFICE mm CUTTING GUIDE Bertrand mold, Minden, I Nebr. Substituted 'fo'r abandoned application Sei'ialND. $910,522, August 14, 1946. This application 'May 1'0, 1948, Serial bin- 26,125
This is a substitute rsr deputation seam No. 690152 2, filed August 14, i946 and entitled Ladies hair cutting device.
An object of this invention is to guide hair for cutting in an improved, relatively easy and exact manner.
Another object of this invention is to provide a structure including a pair of spaced rails hav ing an extension at 'one'end thereof which projects at substantially right angles relative to the longitudinal axis of the rails for engagement with a portion of "an 'indiv'iduals anatomy whose hair is to be cut.
Another object of this invention is to provide a slide between said rails, said slide including means for indicating the position of the slide relative to the rails and a curved comb attached to the slide used primarily in cutting hairwith a slant so it will lay flat when shingled.
Another object of this invention is to provide a simplified device of the character to be described which assists in cutting hair evenly and in the desired preselected manner.
Ancillary objects and features of novelty will become apparent to those skilled in the art in following the description of the preferred form of the invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred form of the invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3--3 of Figure 1 and in the direction of the arrows, and
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 and in the direction of the arrows.
The invention has been devised in order to provide a device for more effectively cutting hair and in particular for more effectively cutting particular types of hair styles such as in shingles so that it will lie smooth.
In utility of the invention a portion of the hair to be cut is maintained in a comb, which comb is arcuate in cross section in order to properly maintain the hair yet permit effective cutting thereof. In accordance with the size and length of hair to remain on the individuals head, an adjustment may be made in the present invention. This adjustment includes the relative positioning of a pair of rails or base members and a slide carrying the said comb.
The specific structure of the present invention includes a pair of rails Ill and I2 respectively .4 Claims. '(01. 13-2-15) which arerormed ot-some relatively" light material such as certain types "of metal, commercial plastic or the like. The railsare maintained spaced reiationthrough the medium of a none- I 'necting plate 14st oneend thereof and a bracket I 6 having raised portions -l'8 thereon. The bracket and plate integral with thesaid rails lit-and 42) are maintained inp o'sition' by any-suitable means, preferably screws 20 with pe'r'tinentnuts 22 at? tached thereto, maintaining the screws-firmlyin position.
The opposite ends ef th'e said'raiils has an iexs tension generally indicated at 2t "which includes right angular bends on the said rails 10 and 12 connected by means of a plate 26 which is attached to the rails by means of conventional screws 28 and nuts 30. Of course, if the device is made of commercial plastic, many portions may be formed integral and when the invention is reduced to practice in metal the nuts may be obviated in favor of welding, brazing, riveting or the like.
A slide generally indicated at 32 is supplied for cooperation with the spaced rails l0 and I2 respectively extending therebetween and on both sides thereof. The specific structure of the slide includes a pair of spaced plates 34 and 36 respectively, having spacers 38 and 40 adjacent each end thereof and interposed therebetween. The said plates 34 and 36 ride on opposed faces of the rails l0 and I2 and the spacer 40 is positioned between the said rails thereby preventing lateral play of the slide 32 relative to the rails.
A strip of material 42 is attached to. the spacers 38 and 40 by means of conventional screws: 44 and 46 respectively which extend entirely through both plates 34 and 36. The plate 36 and the strip 42 are received beneath the raised por-- tions l8 of the said bracket l6 thereby also guiding the slide in its travel.
A curled terminal portion 50 is formed integral with said strip 42 and is used for actuation purposes. The opposite end of the said strip terminates in a comb generally indicated at 52. This comb extends at right angles relatively to the longitudinal axis of the said strip 4'2 and has curved teeth 54 forming a portion thereof.
A plurality of suitable markings 56 are spaced on the strip 42 for cooperation with an edge of the bracket I6 for indicating the relative distance between the comb 52 and the extension 24. By moving the strip 42 a distance equal to the space between two markings 56, the comb 52 is moved an equal amount with respect to the "extension 25. By this means the amount of hair left on the head of an individual is regulated and indicated.
From. the foregoing a clear understanding of the present invention is deemed readily apparent. Also, it is apparent that various changes and modifications .may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. Accordingly, limitation 'is sought only in accordance with the scope of the following claims.
Having described the claimed as new is:
l. A guide for hair cutting comprising apair of spaced rails, a slide received between said rails, a comb attached to said slide and extending at substantially right angles relative there-' to, curved teeth forming a part of said comb, and an extension of said rails extending at substantially right angles to the longitudinal axis of said rails.
2. A guide for hair cutting comprising a pair of spaced rails, a slide received between said rails, a. comb attached to said slide and extending at substantially right angles relative thereto, teeth forming a part of said comb, an extension of said rails extending at substantially right angles to the longitudinal axis of said rails, and a bracket attached to said rails maintaining them in .spaced relation and guiding said slide in a predetermined travel.
3. A guide for hair cutting comprising a pair of spaced rails, a slide received between said ;rails, a comb attached to said slide and extendinvention, what isv 4 ing at substantially right angles relative there to, curved teeth forming a part of said comb, an extension of said rails extending at substantially right angles to the longitudinal axis of said rails, a bracket attached to said rails maintaining them in spaced spaced relation and guiding said slide in a. predetermined travel, said slide including a front and back plate positioned on opposite faces of said rails and spacers attached between said plates. i. A guide for hair cutting comprising a pair of spaced rails, a slide received between said rails. a comb attached to said slide and extending at substantially right angles relative thereto, curved teeth forming a part of said comb, an extension of said rails extending at substantially right angles to the longitudinal axis of said rails, a bracket attached to said rails maintaining them in spaced relation and guiding said slide in a predetermined travel, and means on said slide cooperating" with an ed e of said bracket for indicating the distance from said comb to said rail extension.
