8 Claims.
The present invention relates generally to bathtubs, basins, and the like, and it has more particular reference to a bathtub drain and sump assembly.
' One of the principal objects of this invention is to simplify a construction and arrangement of a bathtub drain and sump assembly and to improve the efficiency and operation thereof.
Another principal object is the provision of a drain and sump assembly for facilitating the `rapid drainage of water, suds and the like from the tub.
Also it is a principal object to provide a drain and sump assembly wherein the sump is easily accessible for cleaning and `for the removal of any accumulation of foreign matter.
Still another principal object hereof resides in the provision of a drain and sump assembly wherein a strainer is so arranged as to provide an annular gutter between it and a depressed region of the tub bottom wall, and strainer being readily demountable to afford access to the sump.
A still further object hereof is to provide an assembly of the character contemplated herein, which assembly is constructed and arranged so that articles which may have passed through the strainer will be retained in the sump from which they may be retrieved before said articles are discharged into the waste pipe.
Additional objects, aims, and advantages of the present invention will be apparent to persons skilled in the art after the construction and operation of the drain and sump assembly is understood from the within description.
It is preferred to accomplish the numerous objects of this invention, and practice the same,
in substantially the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the claims. Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a vertical side elevation of a bathtub showing the drain and sump assembly contemplated herein Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan looking down at in, and in these drawings like reference characters identify the same parts in the diierent views.
The tub 5, as shown in Fig 1, has a rim 6 with an apron or panel 1 extending down therefrom to the floor of the room, and it has a generally nat bottom wall 8 which inclines downwardly toward the drainage end of the tub at the right in Fig. 1.
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 the lower region of the bottom 8 has an annular depression formed by a down-turned ange 9 with an annular inwardly extending shoulder Ill the radially inward portion of which terminates in downturned lip II to provide a relatively wide drain opening D.
A strainer of novel construction is supported on shoulder Ill and comprising a metal stamping of the form shown in detail in Fig. 3. This strainer comprises a ilattened dome shaped top I2 the central region of which is in approximately the plane of the tub bottom 8 and has a central aperture in the bottom of a countersink I3, the purpose of which will hereinafter be explained.
As shown in Fig 3, the strainer is of inverted cup-shape, having a depending annular side wall I4 that is interrupted by a plurality of recesses I5 which define egress openings. These egress openings are of such dimensions that they permit small articles and the like to pass therethrough. The spacing of the openings is such that supporting feet Ma are deiined between them for maintaining the strainer top in desired relation to the tub bottom wall B. The side wall I4 of the strainer is located in radially inward spaced relation from the flange 9 forming the depression, and the supporting feet I 4a rest upon the shoulder I at the bottom of the depression. This arrangement is made in order to accelerate the flow and increase the volume of water out of the tub, and the strainer wall I 4, being spaced from depression ange 9, provides an annular gutter G in the depression surrounding the strainer.
A sump mounting annulus or ring I5, having an inside diameter sufficient to receive the lower flange II of the depression, is placed against the under-surface of shoulder Ill, and is permanently anchored thereto by welding as at I'I and I 8. The outside diameter of annulus I 6 is greater than the diameter oi' the depression so that the outer region of the annulus projects beyond the vertical plane of wall 9. This outer region of the annulus provides flange means for :attachment of a basin-like sump I9 which has a greater diameter than the depression in the tub bottom wall The upper edge of the sump has: an lnturned ange 2B projecting under annulus I6 Where it is heldin assembly therewith by means of bolts 2l passing through said fiange and threaded into tapped openings in the outer region of the annulus I6. In order to prevent leakage, a gasket 22 is interposed between fdange 2li and annulusl to sealthejoint between `these parts.
The basin-like bottom 23 on the sump 'I9 'is apertured preferably at its center and an overflow drain pipe 24 is secured in said opening :by welding as shown at 25 and 26. projects up into the sump a suitabledistance and prevents articles which may fall `into the sump,V through the strainer recesses .lfrom beingdisf charged into drain pipe 24.

depression surrounding said outlet; anrinverted n charge outlet; a shoulder surrounding said outlet below the plane of the tub bottoms; an inverted cup-shaped strainer having a top wall approximately in the plane of the tub bottom and having an apertured side wall supported on said shoulder, the diameter of said side wall being less than the diameter of said depression whereby a gutter is provided surrounding said strainer; a sump carried by said shoulder beneath said depression in communication with said discharge outlet; and an overflow drain pipe extending up through the bottom wall of said sump.

A tub, basin, and the like having an apertured depression in its bottom dening a discharge outlet; a shoulder surrounding said outlet below the plane of the tub bottom; flange means projecting outward from said shoulder; a strainer supported on said shoulder, said strainer being comprised of a top wall, and a cylindrical side wall having recesses extending upward from its lower edge, the diameter of said cylindrical wall being less than the diameter of Said depression whereby an annular gutter is provided which is drained through said recesses; a sump carried by said ange means beneath said depression in communication with said discharge outlet; and an overflow drain pipe communicating with said sump through a wall thereof.

A tub and the like having a bottom with an apertured depression therein deiined by a depending wall, an inwardly extending shoulder member surrounding a central opening, and having an outwardly extending flange member; a strainer comprised of a top wall at least a portion of which is approximately in the plane of the tub bottom, and apertured supporting means depending from said top wall and arranged on said shoulder member in radially inwardly spaced relation to the depending wall of said depression thereby defining a gutter surrounding said strainer; a sump having a radial flange cooperatively associated with said outwardly extending flange member and secured thereto; an overflow drain pipe having an end extending upward into said sump; a xed cross vmember` beneath said strainer top wall; and means inserted through said strainer top wall and engaged with said cross member for maintaining said strainer in position on said shoulder member.
