This invention relates generally to firearms, and more particularly is directed to handle grips for a revolver.

Revolvers are standard equipment for policemen, mail train clerks, peace ofiicers, and others acting in an ofiicial capacity. Additional cartridges for use are generally carried in a belt constituting a part of such equipment.

Anyone having experience in the use of revolvers appreciates the inconvenience of locating the cartridges in a belt and withdrawing them, particularly when they have remained in the belt for a considerable period and become stuck or frozen. Practically every police officer at one time or another has been placed at a serious disadvantage during an emergency due to the dimculty in withdrawing cartridges from the belt. During the winter months, heavy outer wearing apparel interferes with quick access to the belt and a glove or mitten must be removed before the cartridges can be forced upwardly through the loops of the belt.

It is the common practice among police officers to apprehend an escaping suspect by the firing of warning shots over his head. This act may deplete the immediate supply of cartridges in the cylinder to an extent whereby the suspect may be the aggressor, thereby endangering the life of the ofiicer, particularly during a reloading period.

Accordingly, one of the principal objects of the subject invention is to overcome the disadvantages above referred to and provide an additional supply of cartridges, which will be readily available for instant use in any emergency.

More particularly in this respect, an object of the invention is to provide handle grips for a revolver with chambers for receiving an additional supply of cartridges.

An important object of the invention is to provide means for normally retaining the cartridges in the chambers and a lock or latch for such means.

A particular object of the invention is to preferably design and construct the retaining means in the form of a pivotal cover and arrange the chambers longitudinally with respect to the revolver butt so that when the cover is unlocked and tilted at an appropriate angle the cartridges will fall out and be deflected by the cover into fit) 2 the palm of the hand for instant use in reloading the cylinder.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved latch for the cover which is conveniently located for operation.

A further object of the invention is to provide resilient means, whereby, if desired, the car-.- tridges may be ejectedautomatically upon releasing the latch.

g A still further object is to provide a plate which preferably serves to reenforce and connect the grips at their outer extremities and atthe same timeprovides a support. for the cover and latch.

Additional objects reside in the simplicity of design and construction of the grips to facilitate their attachment to the conventional revolver butt frame; increased gripping area over the conventional grips; lightness in weight; durability; and economy of manufacture.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent after the description hereinafter set forth is considered in conjunction with the drawing annexed hereto.

In the drawing the preferred form of the invention is illustrated, and for convenience, like parts are designated by the same numeral.

Figure 1 is a side view, in elevation, of a conventional revolver illustrating the invention applied thereto and the position of cartridges escaping from the handle grips;

Figure 2 is a. partial enlarged vertical section taken through an appropriate part of the butt structure depicting details of the reenforcing plate, cover, and latch means;

Figure 3 is a bottom view of the revolver butt structure looking in the direction of the arrows 33 in Figure 2;

Figure 4 is a transverse section taken substantially on line 4-4 of Figure 3 illustrating other constructional details of the plate, cover, and latch; and

Figure 5 is a transverse section taken substantially on line 5-5 of Figure 3 depicting the relationship of certain of the parts.

The revolver exemplified in Figure 1 is of the conventional type and, among other things, includes a butt frame I, and a cylinder 2 capable of holding a plurality of cartridges. Handle grips 3 and related structure comprising the subject invention are adapted to 'be substituted for those of the conventional form and are secured to the inner part of the frame I by fastening means 4. The grips 3 are substantially identical and. conform to the general configuration f the frame. They may be made out of any material suitable for the purpose, but are preferably constructed from a durable plastic which is moulded to the shape desired.

The grips 3 are preferably made somewhat thicker and longer thanrthe conventional grips in order that a row of three cylindrical chambers 5 may be provided in each grip for the cartridges. The chambers 5 preferably extend inwardly from. thelbutt end in spaced parallel relation andare-of sufficient diameter'and length to it freely support the cartridges. Due to the moderate increased size of the grips, greater grippingr area for the hand is provided.

The grips are preferably connected together adjacent their outer extremities by a plate 6 20,-

which abuts the end of frame I and ends of the grips. The plate 6 is securedto'the: grips by screws 1, and is provided with rows of apertures 8 registering with and of a diameter correspondingto that of the chambers 5. This plate, among otherthings, limits-the inward-movement of the cartridges.

The opposite and inner extremity-of the plate 8 is providedwith an opening I2 and an adjacent cutwardly-extending offset or raised portion I3 spaced from: and generally parallel with respect'to the end surface' M of the frame 2.

The latch is so constructed and, arranged that by pulling out on the same as indicated by the dotted-lines in Figure 2, it will releasethedetent 22' from the groove'2 l ,vwhereupon any cartridges in the chambers 5'- will' drop out'" and be deflected by the cover into the palm of the hand for immediate use. The yieldable portion 24 of the spring is ofa length to" provide sufficient resilience to normally maintain the latch in the holding position as depicted in Figure-2. It is to be understood that insofar as the present inventiorris concerned, it is' immaterial whether the latchmechanism is constructed as exemplified or in any other form: Itis also to be understood that if founddesirable, the covermay" be slid 4 ably mounted with holes off center with the chambers so that when the cover is slid to place the holes on center the cartridges will be released therethrough. Moreover, the invention contemplates an assembly wherein the cover may be directly pivoted to the frame I whereupon the plate 6 may be omitted, in which the event the outer extremities of the grips would be connected to the frame by fastening means similar to 4.

Attention is directed to the fact that the cover assumes a normally spaced parallel relation with respect to the plate, the purpose of which is to provide clearance for the butt ends or rims of the cartridgeswhichrims engagethe plate.

As stated above, one object of1the2invention is to provide a construction by which the cartridges are automatically ejected when the latch releases the cover. This is accomplished by providing a relatively small hole at the base of each chamber and. securing a helical spring 21 therein with one end engaging the cartridge to normally urge it outwardly against the cover.

In view of the foregoing description it will be manifest that improved means are provided whereby an additional supply of cartridges is madereadily available for immediate use, thereby affording greater protection-fora-poliee oflicer in order that he may better control the activi ties of criminals and maintain peace:

I claim:

1. A pistol'butt frame havingopposite sides of" a width'greater than its thickness,- apair of 'sub= stantially corresponding hand gripssecured to the opposite sides of the frame andconforming generally to its configuration,- the butt end of each grip having a row of chambers extending inwardly lengthwise of the grip withthe" rows arranged substantially in parallel relationship; and a cover common to both rows for-concealing and detachablyholding cartridgesplaced in the chambers.
