This invention has reference to an improved cabinet or washstand particularly suitable for use by hairdressers, for washing or shampooing the hair.

One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a folding cabinet or washstand which can be folded up into a completely enclosed box form when not in use, and which is provided with a collapsible or folding draining tray which can be opened out for use when washing or shampooing the hair.

The improved cabinet or washstand is also adapted for shampooing operations in which the head of the patient is supported with the nape of the neck resting over the edge of the basin.

According to my invention the cabinet or washstand comprises a casing enclosing water supply fittings and overflow and waste pipe fittings, a front portion of the casing being hinged at or near its lower edge to open and close and to form a draining tray when opened, the tray, when opened, being supported in an inclined position, to enable any water to drain into the lower part of the cabinet. Anti-splash wings fitted at the sides of the draining tray form therewith a collapsible or folding receptacle within which hairwashing operations can be carried out. The upper edge of the tray may be formed with a recess to receive the nape of the neck, and this recess may be closed or masked by a detachable filling piece, if desired. In order to retain the draining tray in its closed position, the upper part of the cabinet is provided with a hinged lid arranged to fold over the upper edge of the draining tray when the cabinet is closed.

A feature of the improved cabinet is that water is not retained therein when in use, the water draining away into the cabinet and being discharged through the waste and overflow connections. To ensure that water from the draining tray does not drip on to the floor outside the cabinet, the lower edge of the tray is arranged to project into the cabinet when the tray is open.

More specifically stated, the invention comprises a cabinet in the form of a vertical rectangular casing divided into an upper wash compartment and a lower drain compartment by means of a perforated horizontal partition, the water supply fittings being mounted in the upper compartment and the overflow and waste fittings in the compartment below the said partition. The draining tray is constituted by a hinged front for the upper compartment, the said hinged front being pivotally supported .at its lower end, and means being provided for supporting the hinged front in an open inclined position in which its lower edge projects into the upper compartment. The upper compartment is also provided with a hinged lid which is arranged to overlap and retain the hinged front in closed position when the lid is closed, thus providing a completely enclosed cabinet. The hinged lid is preferably of L shape in cross section, and when folded back rests on the top" of the casing, the inside of the lid being fitted with a shelf, tray, or holder for supporting articles thereon when the lid is open.

The cabinet is preferably fitted with a sump in the upper part of the lower compartment to accommodate the waste and overflow fittings, and the perforated partition which separates the upper and lower compartments is preferably formed by a perforated removable cover for the sump.

Hot and cold water supply pipes preferably pass up through the cabinet to hot and cold water taps in the upper part of the cabinet and a waste pipe passes down through the lower compartment from the sump, a removable front panel for the lower compartment giving access to the pipes therein. A spraying nozzle connected by a flexible pipe connection to the hot and cold water taps is also housed in the upper compartment of the cabinet.

Movable or pivoted anti-splash devices may be provided for closing the opening between the side walls of the cabinet and the side edges of the draining tray when the latter is in its open position.

The invention will now be described with the aid of the accompanying drav ings illustrating one construction of a folding shampoo cabinet according to the invention. Fig. l is a perspective view of the cabinet closed, and Fig. 2 is a, perspective view of the cabinet open for use. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the sump with the front of the cabinet open, and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.

The cabinet illustrated comprises side walls l, a rear wall 2, and a fixed front portion 3 positioned between a lower removable panel S and a hinged upper front 5 which forms the draining tray when opened out into an inclined position. The cabinet has a fixed top portion 6 and a hinged lid 1 provided with a front flange 3 which overlaps the hinged front 5. It will be observed that the cabinet is of small dimension from back to front as compared with its width and height, so that it occupies very little space when attached to a wall or other support, for which purpose lugs 9 may be provided on the cabinet.

Fitted horizontally in the cabinet behind the fixed front portion 3 is a sump IU having a drain outlet I I therein which opens into a waste pipe I2. An overflow pipe :3 in the sump also opens into the waste pipe I2. A perforated cover I4 covers the sump I 9 and is preferably made in removable sections. The cover It and sump to separate an upper wash compartment I5 from a lower compartment 6 into which the waste pipe 52 extends.

Hot and cold water supply pipes I? extend up from the compartment I 6 to water taps I8 in the upper compartment and where the pipes extend upwards in the wash compartment I5 they may be covered and protected by a shield I9. The lower removable front panel A, which may be secured by screws or bolts 29, gives access to the pipes I! for connecting them to the service mains, and gives access to the waste pipe I2 for connecting it to the service drain, or for effecting any necessary repairs.

The hinged front 5 which is pivotally mounted on pivot pins 2I in the side walls I, or may be hinged to the fixed front portion 3, can fold up into a vertical position in which it is held by the depending flange 8 of the lid 7 which is either pivoted on pins 22 in the side walls l or hinged to the fixed top portion 6. The lid '1 is fitted on the inside with a tray 23 to hold toilet or other articles or preparations when the lid is opened out and folded back until it rests on the fixed top portion 5 as shown in Fig. 2.

The hinged front 5 which forms the draining tray when opened, may have a recess 24 to receive the nape of the neck of the patient and this recess 24 can be masked by a removable filling piece 32 as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 4 when the recess is not required, or recess 2s may be dispensed with. Fitted to the sides of the tray 5- are anti-splash wings 25 which may be fitted with projections 26 adapted to engage pins or stops 33 on the inside of the side walls I in order to hold the tray 5 in an inclined position when the tray is opened for use. Obviously any other means of supporting the tray in an inclined position might be adopted. Either or both of the side wings 25 may be shaped as shown in Fig. 2 to provide a recess 21 which will enable the hairdresseto pass his arm into the cabinet at the side thereof. Movable or pivoted side flaps 34 may also be fitted, if desired, to close the sides of the wash receptacle fol-me by the tray 5 and the side wings 25.

The upper compartment is also provided with r. nozzle 28 which is connected to the water s by a flexible pipe connection 29 and may suspended in a hook 30 when not in use.

The inner edge 3| of the tray 5 extends into the cabinet and projects over the front of the sump I9, thus ensuring that the water drains into the sump without dripping down the front of the cabinet. The water is not retained in the wash compartment, but flows away through the perforated sump cover I4 into the sump and waste outlet. The cover 4 serves to conceal the sump and to filter the waste water.

The cabinet may be constructed of metal or any other suitable material.

If desired, the side wings of the draining tray 5 may be in the form of overlapping sectors pivoted to open and close fanwise, and the recess 26 for the nape of the neck may be fitted with a resilient collar or cushioning strip, which may also extend along the upper edge of the tray 5.

I claim:

1. A folding shampoo cabinet comprising a vertical rectangular casing, a perforated horizontal partition therein dividing the interior of the casing into an upper wash compartment and a lower drain compartment, waste pipe and over flow fittings in the lower compartment, a. hinged front for the upper compartment, means pivotally supporting the lower end of said hinged front to enable it to swing outwards from a vertical position in which it closes the front of said upper compartment, means for supporting said hinged front in an open inclined position in which its lower edge projects into the upper compartment and forms a draining tray, a hinged lid for said upper compartment, and a flange depending from said lid and arranged to overlap and retain said hinged front in a vertical closed postion when the lid is closed and thus totaaly to enclose the cabinet.

2. A cabinet as specified in claim 1 having the waste and overflow fittings accommodated in a sump located beneath the perforated horizontal partition which is constructed as a removable cover for the said sump.

3. A folding shampoo cabinet comprising an enclosed casing having water supply fittings enclosed therein, said casing having a fiat vertical front, an upper section of which is hinged transversely near its lower edge to open into an inclined position in which it forms draining tray, and a hinged lid of L shape in cross-section which closes the top of said casing and overlaps the upper edge of said upper section when said upper section is closed into a vertical position, to retain said section against outward movement.

4. A folding shampoo cabinet comprising an enclosed rectangular casing having water supply fittings enclosed therein, said casing having a fiat vertical front, an upper section of which is hinged transversely near its lower edge to open into an inclined position in which it forms a draining tray, a fixed top extending horizontally over the rear upper part of said casing, a lid of L shaped section hinged to the front of said fixed top, said lid when closed presenting a horizontal portion closing the front upper part of said casing and presenting a front depending flange which engages over and overlaps the upper edge of said upper section to lock it in a vertical position, and said lid, when open, presenting a horizontal shelf which rests on said fixed top, and presenting an upstanding back for said shelf.
