This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in clippers, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described, such as may be conveniently employed for a variety of purposes, namely, for the trimming of lawns and hedges, for pruning trees, and for other uses of a similar nature.

A further object of the invention is to provide a clipper which is of simple construction and which may be easily and conveniently manipulated.

Another object of the invention is to provide a clipper which is novel in appearance and which will readily lend itself to economical manufacture.

An additional object of the invention is to provide a clipper which may be readily disassembled for purposes of inspection or repair.

With the above more important objects in View, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Like characters of reference are used to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a clipper designated generally by the reference character It, the same embodying in its construction a substantially U-shaped handle ll provided in the side members I2 thereof with a pair of opposed, longitudinally extending channels or ways It.

These ways slidably receive a finger grip I l and a pair of co-acting cutting jaws iii are pivotally attached to this finger grip by means of a suitable pin it.

It is believed that the configuration of the finger grip I l will be clearly apparent from the accompanying drawings and it will be noted that the jaws [5 are each provided with a suitable aperture l1, adapted to receive the aforementioned pivot pin.

The free end portions of the side members l2 are transversely slotted as at I8, the slots l8 being aligned with the ways it and being adapted to receive the end portions of a pair of links I9. These links are pivotally secured in position by ,means of ;suitable pins 20, as will be clearly understood.

The free end portion of each of the links [9 is pivoted as at El medially the length of one of the aforementioned jaws l5, this pivoted connection being hereinafter more fully described.

A suitable spring 22, formed from a resilient wire-like rod, is coiled medially of its length to provide an eye 23, the latter being disposed adjacent the aforementioned pin Iii. It will be noted however, that there is no direct connection between the pin it and the eye.

The free end portions 24 of the spring 22 are arcuated somewhat and each portion is anchored in a suitable aperture provided in the free end portion of the adjacent limb i9 and in a, further aperture 25 provided in each of the jaws l5. In this manner, the links H) are pivoted to the jaws, as has been already explained.

When the invention is placed in use, the resiliency of the spring 22 will normally urge the jaws it into their separated position, as shown in Figure 1. However, by grasping the mid-portion 26 of the handle H and pressing the finger grip I l in the direction of the arrow 21, the jaws l5 will be brought together, as indicated by the arrows 28.

The cutting edges of the jaws are indicated by the reference character 29 and it should, of course, be understood that jaws of various sizes and types may be employed in accordance with difierent working conditions.

In order to prevent the side members 12 of the handle H from spreading, a tie rod 36, configurated substantially as shown, may be employed, the same being attached to the side members [2 by means of the aforementioned pins 29.

It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is considered unnecessary.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
