UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TROUSERS on THE LIKE Montie M. Brohard, Jn, Norwood, Ohio Application November 30, 1946, Serial No. 713,192
1 Claim.
This invention relates to trousers, slacks, or like garments to be worn by members of either sex.
An object of the invention is to provide a garment of the character referred to, embodying a frontal construction which avoids the occurrence of wrinkles and folds at the abdominal region when the wearer assumes a seated position.
Another object is to enhance the appearance and the comfort of a garment by means of the new frontal construction mentioned.
A further object is to avoid the production of a central front seam or overlap which usually becomes worn or thread-bare in advance of other portions of the garment, and thereby renders it unfit for use although the garment may be otherwise serviceable.
The foregoing and other objects are attained 'by the means described herein and illustrated upon the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a front elevational view of the improved garment, with the front opening in closed and fastened condition.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental view showing the garment partially open at the front, and furnished with a slide fastener.
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 showing a modification incorporating button fastening .means.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the garment in -place upon the wearer in seated position, show- :ing the smooth and unwrinkled front resulting from adoption of the new construction herein disclosed.
As stated in the objects, it is the purpose of this invention to eliminate the usual vertical frontal opening of a pair of trousers, slacks or the like, and to supply a different type of opening which is less conspicuous and more desirable in various respects than that of the conventional construc tion. According to the invention, the garment is constituted of a leg tube 1 incorporating a seat section 8, a waistband section 9, and an integral frontal flap or overlap I!) which spans and covers the entire abdominal region of the wearers body. This flap or overlap has a free edge l2 which extends from the crotch l3 obliquely upwardly at a proper angle to dispose the free edge substantially along the groin line of the opposite leg tube l4, said free edge terminating at the location [5 of the waistband, to one side of the arment.
The opposed leg tube [4 has a seat section IB stitched or otherwise secured as at IT along the centerline at the rear of the garment, the stitching extending downwardly and forwardly to the region of crotch H). In the case of leg tube M, there is provided no flap such as It to cover the abdominal region of the wearers body, but instead, the free edge I8 thereof follows the same groin line that is followed by the free edge l2 of the other leg tube. Thus it will be understood that both edges l2 and 18 extend obliquely upwardly from the crotch at equal angles, so that they substantially coincide when the front of the garment is closed. The free edge It terminates at the side of the garment and in the waistband section I9, at the location 29.
In practice, the flap It will preferably include a marginal overlap along the edge I2, to overlie an under-lap or margin 2! of leg tube M, the under-lap being of very limited width so as not to extend over the abdominal region covered by flap I0. Within the narrow Width of the underlap, and in parallelism with edge 58, one element 22 of a slide fastener may be secured, this element being adapted to cooperate with a second element 23 of the slide fastener on flap it, for releasably closing the front opening of the garment. When the front opening is closed, the edges i8 and i2 substantially coincide and rest in parallelism with one another, within the same groin line of the garment. By manipulating the slide fastener to open the garment front, the flap i9 is released and may be thrown to one side for exposing the abdominal region of the wearers body, it being understood that there is no additional flap or any other portion of leg tube id covering the abdominal region. As the flap It is released by lowering the slide fastener, the free edge 58 of leg tube I4 remains substantially within the groin line. In these respects, the instant garment is distinguished from garments of the so-called wrap-around type.
From the foregoing explanation, it will at once be apparent that the new construction of the garment front assures a very neat and comfortable fit over the abdominal region of the body. All puckering or wrinkling is eliminated as shown upon the perspective View of Fig. 4, and there is avoided any tendency for the coinciding edges I2 and [8 to separate and exposed the underclothing while the wearer is seated. The single thickness of material over the abdomen provided by flap Ill ensures maximum comfort to the wearer, and opening or closing the garment front is thereby facilitated and expedited. The multiple thickness of material usually necessary at the overlap is easily and readily accommodated in the groin line without discomfort to the wearer.
In the modified garment of Fig. 3, the construction is the same as in Fig. 2 with the exception that buttons and buttonholes 23 and 24 are substituted for the slide fastener. In either case the garment may be furnished with the customary pockets 25, 26, and 21, the belt straps 28, suspender buttons 29, and waistband buttons and buttonholes 30 and 31. The application of various accessories or features that may be considered desirable in a garment of the character disclosed, may be performed without departing from the invention, as will be understood.
What is claimed is:
A trouser having legs, a seat section, a front section, and a waist band at the top of the seat 15 and front sections characterized by the fact that the front section of the trouser extends across the abdominal region of the wearer and is provided with an opening extending from the crotch to the waist band at a location corresponding to the hip bone thereby dividing said front section into two complementary parts and that said opening is curved to follow the groin line of the wearer both when seated and standing, and means on said complementary front parts at the edges of said curved line for detachably securing said complementary parts together at said curved line.
