This invention relates to jacks or lift devices.
An object of this invention is to provide a simple jack which is designed particularly for physically handicapped persons, whereby an article can be raised a short distance by weight of a foot or the like on the pedal.
In the changing of a tire, a physically handicapped person has great difficulty in raising the new tire to a position where it can be bolted onto the wheel, particularly where the person has only one arm or one leg. With a device constructed according to an embodiment of this invention, the tire or other article is positioned on the lifting foot thereb raising the elevating pedal, so that weight on the pedal will raise the lifting foot and the pedal may then be locked in its foot elevating position and the new tire on the wheel may be bodily shifted against the wheel hub.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral designates generally a base which is provided with a plurality of anti-skid pins or points II for engagement with a plane surface to hold the base |i| against sliding movement of the plane surface. The base H] has fixed thereto a pair of upright parallel bars l2 and l3 which are formed with right angular lower end portions I4 and I respectively, secured by fastening member l6 and I1 respectively to the upper side of the base l0. These upright parallel bars I2 and I3 are provided with a plurality of vertically spaced aligned holes I8 and I9 respectively, through selected aligned pairs of which a pivot bolt 20 is adapted to engage.
A lever 2| formed with a bearing 22 is adapted to be pivotally mounted on the bolt 20 and extends forwardly of the base Hi. The lever 2| has a hinged foot member or plate 23 hingedly secured thereto by means of a hinge 24. The rear edge of the foot member 23 is formed with an upstanding right angular flange 25 which acts as a limit means for limiting the extension of the foot member 23 beneath a wheel W or the like.
The forward end of the lever 2| is provided with an upturned abutment 26 adapted to engage against the lower side of the foot member 23 so that this foot member 23 will be disposed on an acute angle with respect to the upper side of the lever 2|. The lever 2| includes a rear extension lever 21 comprising an operating lever which is formed with an elongated slot 28. A lever holding bar 29 is formed with a plurality of vertically spaced holes 30 and adapted to loosely engage through the slot 28, and is provided with a right angular base portion 3| secured by fastening members 32 to the upper side of the base In.
The upper end of the bar 29 is bent angularly and forwardly as indicated at 33 and is provided with a bearing sleeve 34 which extends between the upper portions of the upright bars l2 and [3. A bolt 35 extends through the sleeve 34 so as to hold the bar 29 against movement relative to the bars l2 and I3. The bar 23 also provides a bracing means for the vertical bars l3 and I3.
As herein disclosed, the bolt 20 is provided at one end with an eye 36 and a wing nut 31 is threaded on the opposite end of the bolt 2|l. The bolt 35 is also provided with an eye 38 at one end and a wing nut 39 is threaded on the opposite end of the bolt 35. A lever lockin pin 43 is adapted to be extended through a selected one of the holes 30 on the upper side of the lever 21, extending across the slot 28 so that when the lever 27 is depressed, the locking pin 40 will hold the elevating foot 23 in its upraised position. The pin 40 is provided with an eye 4| at one end and a chain 42 is connected at one end to the eye 4| and at the other end is secured to the lower portion of the bar 29. In this manner the pin 40 will not readily become lost.
The jack hereinbefore described has been designed for use by a physically handicapped person and is designed for lifting articles which are not exceptionally heavy. As an example, this jack may be used for lifting a tire or a wheel to a position Where the wheel may be bolted to the brake drum of the vehicle. This jack is used by rolling the wheel W on the elevating foot 23, with this foot in its depressed position, and the lever 21 in its upraised position, as shown in Figure 1. The lever 21 is then depressed to the desired degree so as to elevate the foot member 23 until the wheel W is in a position where the central opening may receive the hub of the wheel which is on the vehicle.
The wheel W may then be disposed in proper position with respect to the hub and brake drum, and the lever 2! may be locked in its depressed position by inserting the locking pin 40 through the nearest hole 30 above the upper side of the lever 21. This will permit the user of this device to lock the wheel in its elevated position and the wheel may then be secured in the conventional manner to the vehicle.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A jack comprising a base, a pair of spaced upright standards having a plurality of spaced aligned apertures therein, a rock lever, a pivot bolt for said lever disposed in a selected aligned pair of said apertures, a rectangular wheel receiving plate, hinge means on one edge of said plate hingedly mounting said plate on said lever between the pivot and one end thereof, said plate overlying and extending beyond said one end, an upturned lip at said one end of said lever disposing said plate at an acute angle relative thereto when the plate is in contact with the lip, an upstanding flange on said plate adjacent said hinge means, serving to limit the insertion of said plate beneath a vehicle tire, means forming an elongated slot in said lever on the side of said pivot bolt opposite said plate, an arcuate lever holding bar having a plurality of openings therein secured at one end to said base and at its other end to a bolt extending through the uppermost pair of apertures in said standards, said lever holding bar extending through said slot, and a lever holding bolt adapted to be passed through a selected one of said openings above said lever and engaging the latter to hold said lever and hence said plate in a selected position of adjustment.
